Thursday Jan 31

XC Skiing (skate) 2:00:00 [2]
Lesson with Mr Bigelow, the geography gigalo. He was lots of help. I'll need to head out a few times on my own to work out my kinks.

Wednesday Jan 30

Swimming 40:00 [3]
Mr Mo, Siobhan and I in the fast lane again. Got bored of regular strokes so I pretended to be an otter for a few lengths, then a dolphin. I also played around with the flippers a bit to see how far I could go underwater without breathing. I can't quite get the full 25m yet... I'm sure the lifeguards were entertained.

Tuesday Jan 29

XC Skiing (skate) 1:00:00 [3]
Around the racing trails.
XC Skiing (skate) 10:00 [5]
Sprints of various techniques up hills. Great lesson today but I have trouble implementing all the tips.

Monday Jan 28

XC Skiing (classic) 3:45:00 [3]
Fast ski with La Femme around the loop and then I split off on my own to join a bunch of teachers up at Huron for dinner. Looped out and back with the group to keep warm as there were some new skiers out.

Sunday Jan 27

Snowshoeing 30:00 [1]
Along the creek with Skyler.
Hockey 40:00 [5]
Almost died at hockey today. Not many players and for some reason I ended up doing a lot of end to end rushes. I was skating like a maniac.
Swimming 30:00 [3]
Got to the pool early and made the mistake of sitting in the hot tub for 20min prior to the lengths. After a long weekend of tough activity I kinda bailed on the swimming when my lane got too busy and went for an ice cream instead. Yummy peanut-butter chocolate!

Saturday Jan 26

XC Skiing (classic) 6:00:00 [3]
Typical Meldrum adventure. No groomed trails all day and lots of sketchy steep hills. About half the time we were breaking trail. We only stopped for a few minutes to jam food in our mouths. Absolutely perfect day but I'm sleeping in tomorrow and taking a day off skiing.

Friday Jan 25

XC Skiing (classic) 1:50:00 [4]
Got stuck at school and missed the start of the friday group. Tried to play catch up but when it started to snow I decided to hit the back trails and have some fun. Pushed hard (race pace) to get a good ski in before the TGIF pizza & beer.

Wednesday Jan 23

XC Skiing (classic) 1:30:00 [3]
Very cold night ski with Meldrum Jr, friends & dogs. Thank goodness I was wearing my fancy dancy new Salomon jacket to keep me warm.

Tuesday Jan 22

XC Skiing (skate) 1:15:00 [3]
XC Skiing (skate) 15:00 [5]
3 x 2min intervals and a bunch of little sprints. Lots of fresh snow fell today so it was tough slugging on the trails.

Sunday Jan 20

XC Skiing (classic) 2:15:00 [3]
Slice, Leannimal and I got out on the trails again. It was colder today so we pushed a little harder (and stopped less for snacks) to keep warm. O'Brian out to new cabin just before Heridge. The downhills were icy and Leannimal almost took out a couple hikers at the bottom of a treacherous section (she was a pro on most of the downhills though). The girls are definitely ready to complete the CSM.

Saturday Jan 19

XC Skiing (classic) 4:30:00 [2]
The TO gang came down for some fun CSM training. Phatty, Slice, Leannimal, La Femme, Phatty Jr, JK and I hit the trails for a full day of adventures in the sun. We started off by heading into the back woods off skyline. Everyone had a fun time whipping down the trails and trying to avoid the open creeks. Then it was off the McKinstry for a yummy lunch (including a little wine). Alain joined us there for the way home The gang did extremely well so hopefully we converted some x-country hatters... Phatty???

Friday Jan 18

XC Skiing (classic) 1:30:00 [3]
Joined the Merivale crew on a ski up to outhouse corner. Made the mistake of giving Mr Mo some technique tips during our last ski and now I'm having troubles keeping up. No tracks so the conditions were pretty crappy and slow but it's always nice to get out on a Friday.

Thursday Jan 17

Snowshoeing 40:00 [1]
Tromp out back with Skyler.

Wednesday Jan 16

Swimming 45:00 [2]
Finally organized a swim with Mr Mo. We've been talking about it for months. Siobhan came too to give us some tips. I can't swim a full length without breathing anymore. Must cut back on the smokes.

Tuesday Jan 15

Hockey (coaching) 1:10:00 [1]
XC Skiing (skate) 50:00 [3]
Warm-up & down. With this group even this is challenging, especially starting at Fortune.
XC Skiing (skate) 30:00 [4]
Legs only & arms only - natural intervals.

Sunday Jan 13

XC Skiing (skate) 1:40:00 [5]
La Femme and I started out with a nice moderate pace but about 5mins in a group of skiers that we know passed us so we decided to ramp it up to stick with them. It ended up being a full on sprint ski from P16 out to the Lac Phillip campground and back. Not much snow, but it was super fast. Very tired.
Hockey 30:00 [4]
Went straight from my hard ski to hockey. I spent just long enough in the car to get some good lactic acid build-up. My legs burned with every stride but I played really well - including a beauty goal and an assist.

Saturday Jan 12

XC Skiing (classic) 4:00:00 [3]
Great long ski with our heavy packs. We went out towards the fire tower, which provided us with some excellent downhill practice. Making those tight corners with a lot of weight proved to be challenging for me. Pace was faster than normal due to some new additions to our group that we had to impress.

Friday Jan 11

Running (road) 40:00 [4]
Quick and dirty run along the canal. Legs felt surprisingly good for doing nothing all week.

Tuesday Jan 8

Note
Had too much fun over the holidays and now I'm SWAMPED with work. I've already cancelled 3 fun ski activities due to marking and I see no end in sight. I just need to make it to the end of the semester. February, where art thou?

Sunday Jan 6

Hockey 1:00:00 [4]
2-1 loss to the top team in the league. We were pretty much stuck in our own end the entire time chasing the puck like a bunch of weirdoes.
Running (road) 30:00 [3]
Quick little jaunt over to a friend's place to get my bangs trimmed.

Saturday Jan 5

XC Skiing (classic) 3:50:00 [2]
Slice, La Femme and I hit the trails in the gats in the search of cute boys, oh I mean to train for the CSM. Great ski, no luck with the boys.

Friday Jan 4

Snowshoeing 1:30:00 [1]
Lovely snowshoe with Slice and Adventure M-A in Stony Swamp. We explored the forest following the myriad of deer tracks, the chirping chickadees and attempted to find the swamp I used to play hockey on as a child. There were all kinds of cool depression areas created from when the deer curl up and get their zzz.

Thursday Jan 3

XC Skiing (classic) 4:00:00 [3]
My mom nicely volunteered to pack my bag out so that I could go for a big ski and not need to loop back to the cabin for my stuff. I did the first hour with my sis, bro and his girlfriend along the snowshoe trail out of Lusk. The trail was really fun and gnarly with fluffy snow and creeks popping out to add some excitement. At the end of the trail I went off on my own to Herridge (for a much needed warm-up and snack break), then up the Ho Chi Minh trail to P17 then back to the car at P19. It was a long cold ski and no matter how hard I pushed I felt super slow. I'll blame it on the temperature (-28 with the wind chill)...

Wednesday Jan 2

XC Skiing (classic) 1:30:00 [2]
Family ski into Lusk form P19. I was very worried about running out of water so I carried in 9L, as well as some wine and dinner for 7 and fuel and cloths... My bag was pretty much a million pounds. I was doing more of a shuffle the whole way in and I didn't even get going quickly down the hills since my skis were totally bottomed out. We did drink all the water (and wine) and my burritos were a hit.
XC Skiing (classic) 1:30:00 [3]
My mom and I went out for a little ski around the Taylor Lake loop. It was so nice to be able to use some proper technique and see some glide. It cooled off near the end so we picked up the pace to get back to the warmth of the cabin.

Tuesday Jan 1

Running (trail) 30:00 [3]
Chilly run on the lake with the girls and Aaron. Guess we didn't drink enough in the hot tub if we were still up for activity the next morning. I wasn't super keen on the slush layer on top of the ice that made me feel like I would fall through at any minute. I followed behind Slice as she is braver than I.
