Orienteering race (Classic) 1:13:55 [4] *** 5.8 km (12:45 / km) +195m 10:55 / km

Today's course was the best of the weekend. I really liked it. I wish the more technical terrain we were in today had been used for the middle, though. Got off to a slow start. I failed to realize that it would be so technical near number one and picked a too far away attack point. Then when I got close, I got disoriented and had to approach really slowly.

Once again a very consistent run. Apparently my slowest relative leg was 10 to 11. I climbed onto the wide spur and once up there, it was a little featureless, so I think I slowed down to be safe with my navigation. Sped up again when I hit the rectangular plateau feature and knew where I was. Also was a little slow into the control itself after climbing the hill. I didn't see the open field right away.

Orienteering race 49:45 [4] *** 3.9 km (12:45 / km) +175m 10:25 / km

Green Y middle course. Seemed just slightly long and not really technical enough for a middle, but a decent course. Winning time was Holly K in 36 minutes. I had a very consistent run. Some time lost in the ride between 3 and 4. I was trying to match the trail bends with the terrain and it wasn't working out. Eventually I decided that the trail just wasn't quite right and trusted the contours. I stayed on the trail longer than planned because of this.

Bad route choice from 9 to 10. I stayed low and I'm sure a more direct route would have been faster. This happened partly because I was running with Charlie (speaking of which - what's up with two Green courses and the only difference is the first control?) and he took off on the low route. Also, although I had originally been planning the higher route, at one point I think I accidentally looked at the 6 circle instead of 9 and thought - "oh, this low route isn't so long after all." Realized this was wrong when I ran into control 6 along the route.

Orienteering race (Sprint) 26:13 [4] *** 2.5 km (10:29 / km) +75m 9:07 / km

LAOC had a team! I ran with father and son pair Allen and Will Hubsch. Will is quite the star here in LAOC territory. He ran yellow at the meet, but has been training on Orange and advanced courses at local meets. Won the Orange at Anza-Borrego this year. Allen took the lead leg and did respectably, then Will went out. Unfortunately, he had difficulty in the technical final portion of the course and lost some time. I went out last and was gratified to be seeing other competitors out there. The most fun was turning right into the finish while about 6 guys were doing their gender penalty loop.

Orienteering race (Sprint) 27:16 [4] *** 2.5 km (10:54 / km) +95m 9:10 / km

Sprint at Ran-It Granite A-meet. After missing my connection in Chicago, I arrived at Dulles airport about 3 hours later than scheduled and then made my way north to the meet site. So I was pretty tired. I enjoyed the sprint and just approached it as a nice little training run and model event. I was pooped enough at the finish that I decided not to do the second sprint. I didn't want to wear myself out before the weekend even started.

Went to dinner with Glen and the Shannonhouses at a brew pub in historic Ellicott City. I'm not sure what came over me, but for some reason I read the menu and actually decided to order beer! I got this sampler set that was way more beer than I bargained for. Managed to drink half of it and was saved when Don and Marit Davis sat down across the restaurant from us. I gave Don my leftovers and he happily disposed of them.

Running tempo 25:00 [4]

Around the bunny field. It was dark and my watch wasn't set right for the intervals I usually do, so instead I just did some pushed paces based on pace counts. Some 100 paces long and some 200 paces long. Total paces spent at pushed pace was 900 paces (probably about 10 minutes).
