Western States Championships Day 3 - Classic Brown. Scoring for the competition is based on best two out of three days, with scores relative to the class winner. After two days, I'm in third place behind Belgian Linda Verbraken and Sue Kuestner. So my strategy was to push as hard as I could. Even if I beat Sue, that might not be good enough if I didn't have a good score relative to Linda. For the last few days we've been watching Disney movies and I took the Dory approach - "just keep running."

One minor mistake at number 1, going to the rocks on the spur just to the east of the control. Interestingly, it seems almost everyone made this same error. I recoverd from it quickly enough that Attackpoint didn't even flag it. It does, however, show a loss of 38 seconds on number 6. I chose to go up the reentrant and over the top. I ended up going down the cliffs further to the right than planned, so that loss is probably hesitation checking out all of the cliff bottoms on the way to the control. Or maybe it was just a lot faster to run around the bottom.

Sue beat Linda today and rightfully took the Western States title. I ended up third overall, just barely squeaking it out ahead of Kathleen Lennon. A great set of races that really kept me moving!

Western States Champs Day 2 - Classic Brown. Today I started two minutes behind Sue and caught her at number 2. But she still got ahead again by the end of the course. I ended up 40 seconds ahead in time. Once again a clean race. Attackpoint shows me as an error on the run-in. I did start out in slightly the wrong direction, but I think this is more likely due to fatigue. After three weeks in a row of racing, I'm getting tired. But I'm pushing harder than I thought I would this weekend because of how close Sue and I are.

Western States Champs Day 1 - Classic Brown. Running in a pretty competitive class of about six or seven women. Sue K. is the only Western States competition, but it's still going to be a race. Today she started two minutes behind me and caught up with me about 1/2 way through the course. She definitely is running faster than I am. I had a good, clean race.

RMOF Brown Middle. Had a really good race today. My legs are definitely tired from back to back weekends of hard racing, but so far I kept up a decent pace. Only one significant error at number 9, costing about 2:30. From the direction I approached the rocks looked like one feature and I didn't identify the gap I needed to be in. Wandered around a little looking for it until I finally approached from the other side where it's more noticeable.
