X-Country Ski (Classic) 49:38 intensity: (19 @1) + (1:04 @2) + (44:25 @3) + (3:50 @4) 3.84 mi (12:56 / mi) +17m 12:45 / mi
ahr:125 max:153

U of M golf course. Bit of a slog today. Windy with dry blowing snow, so tracks were mostly filled with snow. Groomer was out there while I was there, but it took only about 10 minutes for the track to fill with snow.

Towards the end, when I was feeling especially slow and dragging, I saw a guy in the distance diagonalling and he looked amazing... speeding along. It was a good reminder of what is possible.

(changed the HR distribution to account for non-functioning HRM.... must need new battery in chest strap)

X-Country Ski (Skate) 37:21 intensity: (8 @1) + (34 @2) + (10:55 @3) + (25:44 @4) 3.83 mi (9:45 / mi) +20m 9:35 / mi
ahr:148 max:160

U of M golf course. Course was wind blow, but not nearly as bad as the classic track. Wind was strong though and found myself having to V2 into the wind in a couple flat spots!

Running Road 47:00 intensity: (29 @1) + (1:50 @2) + (40:24 @3) + (4:17 @4) 3.81 mi (12:20 / mi) +14m 12:12 / mi
ahr:138 max:152

Nominally a road run, but with all the snow and ice it felt more like broomball. But it was nice out in the sun, and even running into the wind.

Note

Between Thursday night and Friday morning I spent 4 or 5 hours shoveling and snowblowing. Between that and circus I am fatigued today.

Silks and multiple.

Frustrating how quickly my forearms tire on silks. It's like holding your body weight on a long curtain. Watching an expert makes it seem simple enough:

On trapeze I'm getting close to the point where I think, with more practice, I will be able to do a continuous roll around the bar. think of balancing on the bar at your waist in superman position. Then drop forward, crunch and roll around the bar back into that position. Its scary to try the first tme. I can't do it yet, but getting closer. This woman makes it looks simple: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NjhnPzNE4Q

U of M golf course skate loop.

course was well groomed. A little soft, but not going to complain given how warm it was. Felt great to be out in not-frigid-cold and not-pitch-dark.

Easy jaunt around Como. Had a low grade fever for a few days, but it seems to be gone now, but taking it easy so no relapse.

Plenty of knee deep snow, even with snowshoes on.

Circus 1:00:00 [1]

Back to circus olympics for the 2nd time this week. More events this time, and a couple more difficult than on Monday:

Straddle climbs on silks
From plank to pike on web
Climb to ceiling on silks
Hang on trapeze with knees to chest (for time)
Pull ups
Knee Push ups

Good fun, but my arms were wobbly on the bike home.

Cycling 45:00 [1] 8.0 mi (5:37 / mi)

Bike to circus and back.

ahr:80 max:152

Drop one kid off for 6pm dance... drive to golf course... quick ski loop... drive back to pick up other kid at 7pm.

Probably fastest skiing per mile I've done in many years. Felt great to be outside in non-frigid weather!

I get the feeling my HRM was not working. Hmmm. Definitely. Hopefully just a fluke and not broken.

make up class... Olympic style competition today

Class was split into two groups and we competed on:

1) Climbing to the ceiling on silks (a fabric rope)
2) Pull ups
3) push ups (from knees)
4) Inverted body extensions (hand upside down on a rope in pike position and then shoot your feet up the rope into plank position)

ahr:138 max:151

No motivation today, but still managed to get out... just barely.

Nice running along on the plowed maintenance road along the NE tracks for the first mile or so. I didn't realize how far it went, and will definitely use that as a bike route in the future.

Rode with Chris and Luke. I didn't even try to plan a course and just followed Chris. Luckily it was a short course because he tends to take long routes... he always knows how to find the checkpoints, but often not using efficient routes.

This was the coldest bike ride I've ever done, and multiple times longer than than the second coldest I've done in the past. Experimented with new mittens and goggles. They mostly worked, but not sure what would happen on a longer ride. Upper body was comfortable... maybe cool at times. Legs were fine. Feet got cold, but not uncomfortable... but would have done so on a longer ride.

Not sure if I'll ride in this kind of cold again... we'll see.

Cycling 32:08 intensity: (1 @0) + (29 @1) + (4:42 @2) + (25:10 @3) + (1:46 @4) 4.38 mi (7:21 / mi) +60m 7:03 / mi

Note

This afternoon my son and I went down to watch the start of the Stupor Bowl. Wow! Hundreds of bikers out for that thing today. Hope they all get home in one piece.

Snowshoe race 1:13:19 intensity: (11 @1) + (26 @2) + (35 @3) + (30:25 @4) + (41:42 @5) 5.65 mi (12:59 / mi) +35m 12:44 / mi

Snowshoe Shuffle at Long Lake Park in New Brighton. It's been three years since there was enough snow to use the complete 10k course. I'm glad we were able to run the entire thing this year (even if it is a short course).

Lots of snow, so slower then I was expecting. But they did actually groom some of the trails. There are many walkers on the 5k (and a surprising number on the 10k) so they try to accommodate those that might take issue post-holing in two feet of snow with snowshoes.
