Orienteering race 1:26:49 [4]

Great day at Nerstrand. Perfect weather, nice forest -- what more could you ask for?

My run felt good. No big mistakes and I seemed to finish yet a little closer to the fast guys. I'll have to get out the calculater and confirm that.

I was still able to run at the finish, and that felt good, but it's hard to imagine keeping up the same pace for the Minne-goat.

Running Road 25:00 [3]

Warm up before and during OTNT.

Orienteering 47:15 [3]

OTNT in Minnesota River Bottoms courtesy of Tom P. Interesting variation on a score O'. Visiting certain controls could either extend your time picking controls.

I haven't run much the last month, so this was a good workout for me. Not too fast, not too slow, but with lots of nice terrain.

Cycling Mt Bike 25:00 [2]

Took C for his first mountain bike ride at Salem Hills. We did the single track loop on the north end. Only one incident: at the beginning is the steepest down hill, and its a bit gravely. He wasn't prepared for the speed and bumps and couldn't get his hands around the breaks. He crashed into me at the bottom of the hill, but no injuries. Things went fine after that.

As part of a "100 Point Challenge" between father and son, he needs to ride all around the Salem Hills trails for 10 points. I expect he'll manage it sometime in the next few weeks.

Cycling Road 50:00 [3]

Ride to WW via U of M, river bottoms and Summit.

Note

Final day of our trip. Visit to the Spam museum in Austin, MN, followed by a Spam lunch.

Last stop Niagara Cave near Harmony, MN. We visited Wind Cave and Jewel Cave in the Black Hills. One of the rangers at Jewel Cave recommended Niagara Cave as a contrast to the "dry" caves of the Black Hills. All were very cool.

Monday Sep 14, 2009 #

Note

Visited Minute Man Missile historic site. Took a tour that goes down into the Mission Control Center were two air force people sat for over 30 years during the cold war (obviously not the same two people) with the responsibility to fire nuclear missiles if instructed to do so. These were warheads of incredible power (many times that of those dropped on Japan during WWII). Mind boggling experience.

Family swim at hotel in Worthington, MN.

Sunday Sep 13, 2009 #

Note

Attempted to climb Bear Butte this morning, but it was too windy. We got up on the main ridge and the winds must have been gusting over 40 MPH. A bit much with a 5 year old.

Saturday Sep 12, 2009 #

Note

Rained most the night, and this morning when we had to pack up camp. The Rocket Box is now holding a big mess of wet tent. Headed to Rapid City. Visited the Geology Museum at the South Dakota school of mines which was good fun for a rainy day. Had lunch at the Fire Station Brew Pub. The kids liked visiting the Presidents on the downtown street corners. Swimming at the pool hotel. C finally learned to like water slides.

Friday Sep 11, 2009 #

Note

Wind Cave. Lots of critter sighting.

Thursday Sep 10, 2009 #

Note

Jewel Cave. Hike along Coolidge Creek.

Wednesday Sep 9, 2009 #

Note

Left the Badlands and head for Mount Rushmore. Kids racked up their second Junior Ranger badge as the presidents looked on. Set up camp at Center Lake in Custer State Park.

Tuesday Sep 8, 2009 #

Note

More Badlands. Geology hike with a Ranger on the door trail, followed by scrambling again. The kids then dug for fossils with a ranger to get their Junior Ranger badges. In the afternoon we took another hike with a Ranger to learn more about fossils. As if that wasn't enough, we then made the scenic drive to Wall Drug!

Monday Sep 7, 2009 #

Note

Pulled into the Badlands and set up camp. After that we did some hiking and scrambling (kid style) at Window, Notch and Cliff Shelf trails. The kids loved it.

Sunday Sep 6, 2009 #

Note

Off to the Badlands and Black Hills. Got a late start so we only made it to Sioux Falls. Took the advice of the Gear Junkie and visited the actual Sioux "Falls". Great place for the kids to run around for a while.
