Circus 1:00:00 [2]

Low casting (low, swinging trapeze) and tumbling track.

Didn't quite get the hang of low casting this time. I lost some timing over the last couple months, but that may be due to lack of strength training. Clearly I need to work on my upper body.

Tumbling track is fun, but I get nauseous do dive rolls. I'm doing them better, so I don't get as sick as before, but it's still bad. I wonder of motion sickness pills would help?

Note

Had some issues with the Garmin. It failed to import in SportTracks correctly, so I had to import raw GPX tracks. But then SportTracks would not let me combine them.

3:59 PM. Lebanon Hills, Eagan, MN. 61.0 °F

Mt. Bike with group from work: JAH, JeffD, JeffR, MBM, and EricR. Did a couple of the black, and double-black loops with MBM and EricR. I wasn't as agressive as those two, but then I came back with all the teeth on my front sprocket. They each lost at least three.

Trails were in great condition. Parking lot was packed by the time we left around 6:15. Many people going out with head lights on.

Garmin was off for a few minutes, so lost a few minutes of actual time in motion.

My knees usually hurt after these early, morning road runs. But I can run a half marathon 10 days ago, and my knees were fine. Go figure.

Circus 1:00 [1]

Trampoline and German Wheel.

I'm writing this two days later, and my lower back muscles are very sore. I was trying to do this "simple" trick on the trampoline. You jump up in the air, then land on your rear in pike position, bounce back up and while in the air turn 180 degrees and land in the pike position again. A teenage kid was trying to to show me how to do it, and it looked so easy, but I never quite got it. I now suspect my back muscles are just not quite strong enough. Maybe next time. Here is a video of someone doing it correctly:

Ride from home to start of Minneapolis Bike Tour.

Cycling Road 3:15:00 [3] 36.0 mi (5:25 / mi)

Minneapolis Bike Tour with Poppa C, Jeff D and his daughter. Quads were tired after yesterday's run, but otherwise felt good. Nice day.

Note

Starting to think about winter. Going to order a new pair of running snowshoes from the Good Thunder Snowshoes. They are made by a couple that used to live in Minneapolis, but moved to the wilds of Alaska a few years back. They make the snowshoes themselves, and I like them better than anything you can get in a store or on-line.

Trail-Loppet 1/2 Marathon. Super day for a trail run! My first 1/2 in more than a decade. Ran with my friend KCP. He runs three days a week, but has never run a 1/2 Marathon. I saw him at the local Quickie Mart earlier this week and asked if he wanted to join me at the Trail-Loppet, and he said "sure". We started out at the back of the pack (I counted 11 people behind us at the start). I need a good 20 to 30 minutes to warm up, and I didn't want KCP to start out too fast. It worked out good for us as we slowly passed people along the course. I had a good run, and KCP did excellent. He kept up the entire time, and had a strong finish. Maybe I can get him to do the Voyageur Marathon with me next year???

We passed O'Steve about mile 8 I think. I could hear him hacking in the forest before I could see him. I hope he wasn't as sick as he sounded. We passed KariB with less than a mile to go, and that motivated her to keep up with us to the finish. Steve came in a couple minutes later. Chris and V were there to watch Syd and cheer us on.

I will try to do this again. It would be even better if they could get rid of the 3 miles of pavement along the course.

Circus 1:00:00 [2]

Tumbling Track, Low Wire, and Spanish Web.

Did much better on the Tumbling Track this time. Also didn't get nearly as dizzy doing dive rolls, but got sick to my stomach. Maybe you're not supposed to do dive rolls past a certain age???

12:25 PM. Lebanon Hills, Eagan, MN. 70.0 °F

Can we talk -- about vegetation?!@# We should print this map on light green paper next time.

I thought it was thick going up the hill to #1 until I went down the hill to #2. I messed up a bit leaving #2, in part because of the vegetation, and came out on the wrong trail. Followed a deer trail above the lake shore to #4. Was confused a bit by the trails on the way to 5. 6 was straightforwad, although after paralleling the short stretch of horse trail on this leg, I fell in a pile of logs. I tried to catch myself and that didn't help. I now have a bruised side and back. Got confused by the trails laving 7. 8 was not placed well, but luckily a was staying up above the march and ran into it. Ran the road from 9 to 10. Went a little out of my way near 11 (took the trail longer than I should have. Approached 12 from the east -- is there really a reentrant there? Would have preferred to not have the last control be a big out and back.

It was slow going, but a great day to be out there.

Bike ride in the morning, great breakfast, and left for Itasca State Park.

Cycling Road 2:00:19 intensity: (20:25 @1) + (30:42 @2) + (1:07:09 @3) + (2:03 @4) 22.99 mi (5:14 / mi) +353m 5:00 / mi

7:12 AM. Walker, MN.

Loop south of walker with S. I borrowed his mountain bike and so had to work hard to keep up with him. The southern section we biked is known as the Pyrenees by the locals. It is unusual for a paved bike trail as it constantly snakes and winds left, right , up and down. A nice change from the usual rails to trails monotony.

Note

Left Baxter and headed to Walker. Met our friends for (mediocre) lunch at the Lucky Moose in Walker, then headed back to our friends house. Link went fishing the harbor and caught at least a dozen rock bass. Lots of fun as they never stopped biting. Then we went for a boat ride on Leech Lake (on a "big" boat that was once docked on the Florida coast and was used to cruise the Caribbean). Had dinner and crashed.

Note

Start northern MN road trip. Left home mid morning. Lunch at a small town restaraunt in Onamia -- I think it was called the Cedarwood. We all enjoyed it. Then we went up the west side of Mille Lacs lake to the Native American museum operated by the MN State Historical Society. It's the start of wild rice harvesting season, so we saw a demonstration of how they used to process the rice in the old days. The museum is small but informative.

Next stop was the Comfort Suites in Baxter. They have a small water park that is perfect for young kids. We went swimming right away. We didn't have the place to ourselves, but there we not too many people around. Followed that with dinner at Raferty's in the Westgate mall. It's good, local pizza place.
