Cycling 1:30:00 [2] 15.0 mi (6:00 / mi)

Bike from Golden Valley, around Medicine Lake, and to some of the other local lakes and parks. Not really sure of time and distance... was mostly killing time while waiting for my son.

11 AM

Running Trail (grass) 58:39 [3] 5.16 mi (11:22 / mi) +80m 10:51 / mi

Grass run from south end of Minnehaha Park to Franklin. Intended to go further, but heat destroyed me. Running at altitude on a mountain slope last weekend felt much easier.

I haven't wanted to admit that heat was a problem for me, but now I am convinced. Must adapt... going to mean some early morning long runs going forward.

Hiking 52:21 [1] 3.02 mi (17:20 / mi) +111m 15:34 / mi

Walk home from hot run.

Running Trail race 1:09:48 [5] 6.04 mi (11:33 / mi) +422m 9:30 / mi

Great run... Beaver Creek Solstice 10k. It's been a long time since I've raced on mountain single track... I didn't realize how much I missed it.

Cycling Mt Bike 1:31:35 [5] 4.96 mi (18:28 / mi) +688m 12:54 / mi

"bike" up the mountain.. had to walk a lot... probably more than half.

Had hoped to make it to the top, but came up short 2.5+ miles. Didn't have enough time, water or clothing for it. Maybe some other year.

Cycling Mt Bike 34:12 [1] 5.16 mi (6:38 / mi) +22m 6:33 / mi

Bike down the mountain.

Tuesday Jun 17, 2014 #

Swimming 30:00 [0]

family swim with my daughter at Charter Lodge pool.
7 AM

Running Trail 34:42 [3] 2.41 mi (14:24 / mi) +128m 12:21 / mi

"Easy" mountain run. It's been many days since I've run, so tried to ease back into it. Doing a 10k on the slopes of Beaver Creek Resort on Saturday so just want to do enough to be comfortable. I actually feel better about the altitude than I did when we were here three years ago.
6 PM

Cycling Mt Bike 51:14 [4] 4.62 mi (11:05 / mi) +253m 9:29 / mi

Up paved, and mostly gravel roads, then down some single track before back to gravel roads and paved.

Note

Drove from Estes Park to Beaver Creek (Vail), CO. We took the Trail Ridge Road through Rocky MT National Park. It was very windy up high in the mountains, to the point that we had a hard time staying on the couple of trails we ventured out onto on foot. I assumed this was normal wind. On the far side of the park I talked to a guy that we had seen biking down the mountain. He lives in Estes Park and make the ride regularly. He said the high wind was unusual, to the point that he had to get off his bike a couple times and walk it along the road.

Saturday Jun 14, 2014 #

Note

Drive from Jackson, WY to Estes Park, CO. Long drive.

Note

Drove into Estes Park, CO today. It's been about 30 years since I was here last.

Dennis D. and I came here in the summer of 1985. We messed around in the mountains for a few days before going to an RMOC O'meet near Nedrarland.

We failed to climb Long's Peak... ridiculously windy that day so we turned back.

10 AM

Hiking 2:36:43 [0] 3.31 mi (47:21 / mi) +94m 43:30 / mi

Ranger led hike to Taggart Lake and back. Great way to start the day at Grand Tetons National Park.

3 PM

Cycling Road 38:05 [1] 7.92 mi (4:49 / mi) +18m 4:46 / mi

Bike from Jenny Lake to Moran's to meet family. Mostly downhill, but massive head wind.

I guess the battery is dead in my HRM strap.

11 AM

Hiking 31:03 [0] 1.01 mi (30:45 / mi) +12m 29:39 / mi

Fountain Paint Pots at YNP.

Hiking 27:12 [0] 0.83 mi (32:46 / mi) +15m 31:01 / mi

Midway Geyser Basin. This is a small but very cool basin. One regret is that we did not know to allow time to hike into the hills above this area to look down at it. This is a don't miss area of YNP.

Hiking 32:05 [0] 0.92 mi (34:52 / mi) +24m 32:15 / mi

Family hike West Thumb Geyser Basin.

Wednesday Jun 11, 2014 #

11 AM

Hiking 3:19:48 [0] 4.25 mi (47:01 / mi) +27m 46:06 / mi

Old Faithful geyser basin.

...includes a long stretch waiting for Riverside Geyser to erupt, but was worth the wait.
5 PM

Hiking 14:23 [0] 0.42 mi (34:15 / mi) +11m 31:40 / mi

Family hike on Gull Point sand bar of Yellowstone Lake.

This lake has the strangest natural bridges of I've ever seen. They even built a road across one.

Hiking 7:36 [0] 0.3 mi (25:19 / mi) +13m 22:19 / mi

Lahardy Rapids roadside hike. Yellowstone Lake is high right now, and so is the river. The rapids were fast and rolling... a bit scary.

Hiking 30:35 [0] 0.86 mi (35:34 / mi) +34m 31:40 / mi

Mud Volcano family hike.

The slope here saw 500+ earthquakes in a 15 day period a few years ago and it change the location of geyers and vents, and opened fractures so the ground temp rose and killed all the trees.

Hiking 6:15 [0] 0.2 mi (31:14 / mi) +21m 23:33 / mi

Sulfur Cauldron.

Everywhere in YNP they say to stay on the boardwalks. At this roadside stop a fumarole opened up in the parking lot, just a few feet from the road. So you really need to stay on the boardwalks!

Hiking 4:33 [0] 0.06 mi (1:15:29 / mi) +10m 49:49 / mi

Inspiration Point on north side of Yellowstone River canyon. We missed that one the other day.

Hiking 31:23 [0] 1.1 mi (28:32 / mi) +35m 25:58 / mi

Artists Paintpots... last hike of the day... the kids are still skipping down the trail, singing showtunes... and they want to go swimming yet after twelve hours moving around.

Sunday Jun 8, 2014 #

Note

Drive from Bismarck, ND to Gardiner, MT.

We only planned to go to Gardiner, but decided to push it and see if we could get in to Yellowstone National Park before the visitor center closed at 7pm. We got there soon enough for a quick dinner and to explore the Mammoth Springs before heading back to Gardiner. Nice to get that out of the way so we could head directly to Bunsen Peak in the morning.

Hiking 1:00:00 [0] 1.5 mi (40:00 / mi)

#3 Parallel error
#5 no control... although there was tape so no real time lost
#7 Overshot
#8 Overshot

Other than that I went about as fast as I could given the terrain and altitude. Twas a fabulous day to be in the mountains.

I don't understand why my heart rate was not higher. There were plenty of times I was gasping for air on the uphills. Am I not understanding the physiology correctly?
