Orienteering race 1:40:30 [4] 8.1 km (12:24 / km) +260m 10:41 / km

Ran It Granite A Meet - Red X long course.
Much better than day one. No big mistakes this time. I think I placed at the back of the pack (as opposed to after the pack) -- waiting to see the final results. That was perfect for me. I made it through without feeling beat or injured. After having plantar facitis for a year+, I finally feel like I'm fully recovered. Now I'm more confident I can do speed work and hills without getting easily injured.

Wet course today again. Very open forests. I have to say that the orienteering is easier than at home because of the big hills and lack of fight -- at least on this map.

Orienteering race 1:08:02 [4] 4.7 km (14:29 / km)

Ran It Granite A Meet. Middle distance Red-X. First control was horrible. I made 3 major mistakes: 1) I watched where someone else was going who had started before me and they went off in the wrong direction -- that person DNF'd 2) Made a parallel error by going up the wrong stream bed. 3) Saw a wall that was on the map and followed it, but unfortunetly it was actually a fence on the map. So I basically had to redo that control and found it quickly the second time around. Total on control one: 18:08 (it should have been about 5 minutes -- that would have allowed plenty of time. Otherwise everything went fine.

Forests are runnable. It's been raining, so lots of small streams to cross and wade through. Very pretty. 350+ people orienteering.

Six hours walking the DC Mall and National History Museum w/K,C&E and Leslie.

Tuesday Mar 24, 2009 #

Note

Six hours walking around Mount Vernon today with K,C&E and Leslie. Nice sunny day, but the moist breeze can chill you quickly.

Running Road 53:00 [4]

Out and back down Mount Vernon trail, starting from Leslie's house. Tough run after driving in car for 3 days and tourist walking for 2 days.

Sunny and pretty along the Potomac river. People and Bald Eagles fishing. Woodchucks are out.

Sunday Mar 22, 2009 #

Note

Walking around Gettysburg memorial with K,C&E for a couple hours. Warm enough to picnic outside. Mountains of Pennsylvania were impressive. Must be incredible when the leaves are out.

Orienteering race 50:23 [4]

"Long" impromptu course at Battle Creek w/Todd, Ian and Pete. Being the slowest, I got to pull the tapes as a I went along.

Note
(sick)

Came back from Battle Creek training really dragging. My daughter has been sick with Influenza Type B. After I took her temperature, I took mine: 100.5! I hope I don't get what she's got. Not happy.

Running Trail 41:30 [3]

From home. Breck's woods, out and back on the golf course, then back home. w/stableicers. Tried to do a couple half mile fartleks, but was dragging the whole way. Decent weather, but ground was rough half the time.

X-Country Ski (Classic) 52:00 [3]

Como
one loop: 35 minutes
short south loop: 9 minutes
plus some more

I waxed my skis last night, so everything was faster than last time. But there was alot of snow blown into the tracks and thus had to break trail alot of the time. Strong wind from the East was not cold, but was annoyingly strong.

X-Country Ski (Skate) 28:00 [3]

One loop skating. Track was solid, but either a little rutted or icy.

Had about 5 minutes of direct sun just before it set.

Weights 5:00 [3]

Week 3, Day 3, column 1 on each.
push ups 11 13 8 (32)
sit ups xxx
heal lifts 12x3@

Fell of the wagon on both push ups and sit up, but plan to jump back on again. Could not complete the push ups for this day. Maybe too much skiing?

Couldn't do sit ups because of injury. Won't be able to do any for a week or so.

X-Country Ski (Skate) 26:48 [3]

One loop around Como. The longest I've skated in maybe ten years or more. I threw the skate skis & poles in the car just in case the classic tracks had not been groomed. There were classic tracks, and I did classic first -- but it felt very slow.

I wasn't sure whether to blame the snow, or my fitness/technique. Then I thought about wax. My classic skis are new this year and I only put glide wax on them once. To test the theory, I had to try the skate skis. Bit difference. I've never been very good skating, but I cut about 20% off my class time. So gotta wax more than once a year -- duh!

X-Country Ski (Classic) 51:00 [3]

One full loop Como: 33:17 (slow like the previous time, uggh).
One short (southern) loop: 7:51
Plus some a bit more.
