Orienteering race 59:30 [4]

MNOC Score-O at Willow River. Perfect day. Nice course that was just long enough so the fast guys couldn't get them all.

I split off from the pack after the first couple controls. In part because I figured I wasn't going to get all 22 controls in an hour, but mostly to do my own thing. There were still people around most of the time, but I was better able to focus on what I was supposed to be doing.

Had the most trouble with 204, a spur high on the forest covered bluff. I came down from the thick forest above and went to low and didn't realize it. Luckily pfc came running down the spur so I knew I had to go up.

Orienteering race (sprint) 16:30 [4]

Time may not be correct, but it's in the ball park. Sprint course at Willow River. Looking forward to seeing times of other people.

Had major trouble with #3, the depression near the river dam. I went to low (close to the river) and it took me quite a while to figure that out.

Cycling Road 50:00 [2]

Bike to HHH Dome, and back, for Twins versus the hated Red Sox. The twins lost, but it was a pretty good game. Both managers and catchers got tossed out because they questioned the umpire's wisdom.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3]

OTNT courtesy Tom P at the River bottoms where Portland runs into the MN river. Nice format variation where the controls were all in relatively easy locations on large linear features (trails and reentrants), but there was still opportunity to go off trail between the controls. And it was already jungley out there given that it is still May.

My orienteering was poor. Too distracted by having other people around. Should have done my own thing more.

Good crowd, and we didn't get too wildly separated.

Orienteering race 1:46:00 [4]

Red at Lebanon Hills.
Gotta find my splits. There around here somewhere.
Decent run for me, but was still tired from Wednesday night Tough Persyn. Now I'm feeling some small pains I'd rather not be feeling. Going to skip the Stillwater OTNT this week and hope I recover completely.

Plenty of mistakes today. Now that I can compare my splits with Todd's it's easy to see where my mistakes were:

6 to 7 - I went south trying to follow the indistinct trail, but kept worrying that I was on the horse trail and that the sheriff was going to be around a corner, so I wandered trying to figure out which @#&! trail I was on. I did end up on the horse trail and went way to fare east. arggg.

8 to 9 - As I approached the control from the south, I went to far west too fast and it took me a while to recover.

10 to 11 - I was doing great most of the way. Went fast along the lake shore, but overshot the control and went up the wrong rentrent, and thus had to backtrack through the thick vegetation.

12 to 13 - Did OK until near the end. There were alot of people around and no one could seem to find the control so I hesitated and spent time assessing where I was. Turns out I could see the control from where I was standing if I looked between the leaves.

Tough Persyn
I didn't time anything, but luckily O'Steve timed everything and I finished a few minutes ahead of him, so I just subtracted a few minutes of his times.

Cycling Mt Bike 1:10:00 [3]

Mellow ride from Highland golf course, to Crosby, Ft Snelling, Pike Island and back. Stopped at a Russian Deli on West 7th on the way back for a sandwich (to eat after the ride). Found that they have Sliwka, which are Polish chocolate covered plums. They are hard to find around here, and a bit expensive, but so good. I've already had 4 today. And the smoked salmon sandwich I had was good too. Definitely going back there.

Legs were tired from long run yesterday, so I actually cut the bike ride short.

Running Road 1:46:00 [3]

Road run with SAP J, J and C. Longest road run I've done in a couple years, and I could tell. Perfect morning for it.

Paddling 50:00 [3]

Paddle at lunch with canoe racer J-Dub up and down Long Lake, and a bit of Rice Creek. First time in a racing canoe for me. Very slick and fast. The paddles alone were incredible. Light as could be. I hope he invites me out again.
