Note

Set Saturday OTNT from Nicollet Island. Weather before we started looked grim with cold wet rain, but it cleared up just before we started, which made for great running weather. The sun even came out for a while.

I think I did a better job getting the right number of controls and distance for this kind of street O'. The one I set this summer was too few controls and too many miles. Today's course was 30 controls and roughly 10 km straight line distance, which translated into roughly 10 miles running distance. That seemed like enough controls to keep it interesting and create route choices. Stephen R and Pete C got all the controls in a bit less than 10 miles and in a bit over 90 minutes.

Running Road 1:54:34 intensity: (31 @1) + (3:06 @2) + (44:15 @3) + (1:06:42 @4) 10.01 mi (11:27 / mi) +97m 11:07 / mi

Long, slow, wet 10 miler. Got out in the warm afternoon sunshine. Headed toward Reservoir Woods since it is one of the few areas with interesting scenery and hills, which makes for a good destination. The tall pines and other big trees there always impress me. I tried to run in grass where I could, but many areas were too wet due to mass snow melt. Right achilles has been bothering me any time I get over five miles lately -- I don't like that one bit. Stopped at Batteries Plus to get some button batteries for my daughter's blinking rabbit ears. Ran into neighbors out for a walk the last few blocks, and finished with them.

Last classic of the season at U of M. Track was soft and slow in the afternoon sun. In some places the track was deeper than my ankle, so only did one loop.

X-Country Ski (Skate) 39:17 intensity: (3:46 @1) + (1:36 @2) + (20:45 @3) + (13:10 @4) 3.98 mi (9:52 / mi) +15m 9:45 / mi
ahr:138 max:157

Last skate of the season. The skating bed was actually decent. A few soft spots, and a couple small depressions of water, but covered everywhere. I doubt if that will be the case tomorrow afternoon though. Glad I got out this one last time.

QOC Manassas Blue

Was unsure what course to do. It was a cool, grey day -- snowing a little toward the end of the event. The course setters notes threatened us with 4 foot deep river crossings. I haven't run much the last couple month, but I had plenty of time to kill before my flight out. I threw caution to the wind and did the Blue, and glad I did.

I tried to keep moving the same pace as much as possible. Hills were mild. Tall grass and large blow down areas were the only obstacles. No spring vegetation yet to speak of, so visibility was good. There were many people there, but I seemed to be alone at more than half the controls. It was fun in open areas to see a dozen or more novice orienteers wandering around in their winter coats and mittens.

The orienteering was relatively easy. I was happy with my result. I ran a good training pace the entire way. Fast enough for a good workout, but didn't injure myself. Ended up with a time about 150% of the winner, which is fine for me considering I wasn't racing.

The event was in Manassas Battle field park. This is a National Monument -- the first major battle of the civil war took place here. The confederates sent the federalists running back to Washington after one day, with their tails between their legs. There was a second battle here the following year. It lasted days, and many lives were lost. Again the confederates won the battle and then set their sites on the northern capitol Washington. I'll leave the rest as extra credit work for you.

Note

Orienteering in the morning in VA. I have not run much the last month, but tempted to do the blue course. I can't wait to see what I decide to do....

Cycling Road 45:00 [1] 8.0 mi (5:37 / mi)

Bike to from circus

Circus 1:00:00 [1]

Silks -- got half way through upside down stradle
Trapeze -- started to lose grip
Web - inverted position, angel descent, double leg angel descent for the first time. For some reason angel descents hurt like hell for me due to friction from rope around my legs. Doesn't seem to bother anyone else as much as me. Lots of small bruises after the fact, so maybe bad genetics?
