Sidehiller snowshoe race in Center Sandwich, NH (White Mountains area).

Sunny, but cold and windy day. Difficult to dress for with powerful winds. I was a little to warm, but not sure I could have gone without one more layer.

A nice event in small town at base of mountains. Although I assumed that since it was in the White Mountains, we'd actually be running single track mountain trails. Instead, we ran around the county fairgrounds.... mostly in the open. Disappointing, but still a nice setting.

White Mountainss of New Hampshire - beutiful setting beneath Mt. Washington and friends.

Rented skis and went up and down the river valley. Trails were groomed well, but icy due to recent rains. This was actually good for me because I had waxless rental skis and they seemed fastest on the icy parts of the trail.

MNOC meet at Afton State Park - Score-O'

Fine day. Good course, although I stayed south and that ended up being too much running on the road. With hindsight I probably should have gone north just because I like it better. But either way a fine day.

Note

Ski-O' training at U of M golf course. Good session. After everyone was done, it was good to hear the guys comparing routes on different legs... that is a good sign of at least decently designed courses. If there was route choices to make, then I did something right.

Windchill was bitter at the golf course, so very little standing around before or after. It was tough for some of the skiers to get warm even when they were moving. About 4 inches of fresh snow this day. Groomer started a couple hours before we did and he was still there when we left. He was starting to set the classic tracks when we were leaving about 7:45.

Will try to offer these courses up again sometime in February during daylight hours if I can find an open Saturday or Sunday. May add the stipulation that you can go backward on a one-way trail, but only if you ski backwards (thank Tom for that idea).

Bike to/from circus. It was nice to be out in the slightly warmer weather. Roads were good... but if it gets any warmer they will be a mess.

Vet Ski-O' U of M Golf Course. No grooming for many days, but skating conditions were perfect for me. I do best with a small amount of fresh snow to cover any icy spots. And even with the snow it seemed surprisingly fast. Many people out skiing even though it was cold and windy.

Loop around U of M. Track was solid, but too many leaves and a few spots where ground was visible beneath a thin layer of recent snow. I suspect skating would have been a better option (saw one fast guy out there doing many laps).

Cold, but I was dressed just about right. My right thumb was cold for about half the time, but eventually warmed up. I really couldn't wear much more on my hands. Face was cold on the down hills, but that is to be expected.

Seems that the total distance is longer this year - will have to check old logs to confirm.... and it turns out the distance is exactly the same.
