Strength 15:00 [1]

Did some strength work at trim course in Buena Vista, CO. Not much else to do while waiting for niight O' later today.

I did get up to watch an adventrue race start. It was really more of an off-road triathalon: solo run, bike and kayak, although they said there was a 3 mile orienteeriung course.

10 PM

Orienteering 53:48 intensity: (55 @0) + (44 @1) + (11:33 @2) + (23:46 @3) + (16:50 @4) 2.67 mi (20:09 / mi) +168m 16:51 / mi
ahr:137 max:163

Buena Vista night-O'. Ran with Erik R and his brother Dirk. We had a great time. While Erik and Dirk haven't done any formal orienteering, they have done plenty of related stuff and took to orienteering like fish to water.

Unfortunately the last control was not out. We were the first to get there. Most unfortunate is that it took me 15+ minutes to conclude it wasn't there. As the experienced guy I should have figured it out earlier. I actually ran to the finish, get the control and put it out for everyone else.

Running Trail 50:03 intensity: (1:02 @1) + (9:33 @2) + (33:35 @3) + (5:53 @4) 3.49 mi (14:20 / mi) +167m 12:29 / mi
ahr:134 max:154

Another early morning run... this time in Red Rocks Canyon.

There were about a hundred young miltary people out there to do some hiking and jogging, but they must have stuck to the easiest trails becuase I never saw them.

Nice park, but smaller than I was expecting. They've done a decent job of maintianing it as a wild area given the large number of people that visit it every week. Very much an urban park

Running Trail 43:29 intensity: (31 @0) + (2:07 @1) + (8:36 @2) + (30:35 @3) + (1:40 @4) 2.87 mi (15:09 / mi) +85m 13:52 / mi
ahr:132 max:151

Got up early for short run. Given the altiutde, it was plenty. Casual run, stopped to take pictures in a few spots. Nice morning.

Family hike. Warm day, but the kids did good.... only minor whining. Many people out on a fine Memorial Day.

Swimming 20:00 [1]

family swim and Maplewood community center. My wife and I took turns doing laps while the other hung out with the kids.

Cycling 18:35 intensity: (1:01 @1) + (8:54 @2) + (8:40 @3) 3.65 mi (5:05 / mi) +5m 5:04 / mi
ahr:112 max:139

Bike to Rad Race 3

Cycling race 2:48:51 intensity: (2 @0) + (9 @1) + (21:19 @2) + (57:36 @3) + (1:29:45 @4) 27.94 mi (6:03 / mi) +137m 5:57 / mi
ahr:144 max:163

Rad Race 3.

Start at St. Anthony Main

1) sculpture garden to get a date off a plaque. The clue was bad... still not sure if I actually got the right answer, and wasted too much time there.

2) Elsie's NE

3) Shoot BB gun at cans for points. (drinking game too for imbibers - not me). I hit them each time.

4) Drink can of water (or beer), crush can, shoot it with hockey stick into small goal. Then do one of three things: eat a hamburger, answer a 10th grade multipe choice science question, or drink from the gallon jug labeled "urine" (supposedly was actually apple juice). I took the science question (and luckily got them all correct)

5) Stop at Grumpy's for optional drinking of shot (no thank you)

6) Eat 15 jelly belly beans. Take a raw egg biking with you and return it to this spot... because

next go to 3, 4, 5 and 6 two more times

Then take the raw egg to the finish for more points

7) Bowling Alley (26th and 26th)

8) Midtown Market

9) Finish at Sunrise Bike shop

Free beer at finish... and they were selling fantastic food.

I didn't know about this event until this morning. Glad I went. It was a good excuse to get me outside. Biking from NE back south my quads were getting tired, and was glad to be on the home stretch.

There were lots of sponsored prizes, but I assume I was not fast enough to win anything so headed home after eating.

Cycling 53:09 intensity: (50 @1) + (34:57 @2) + (16:20 @3) + (1:02 @4) 7.89 mi (6:44 / mi) +59m 6:35 / mi
ahr:126 max:151

Ride home. Right knee very painful at times, so walked some, which was fine.

Boot camp work out at lunch time. Totally wiped between that and circus last night.

Tuesday May 20, 2014 #

Circus 1:30:00 [1]

90 minute summer classes are much tougher than 60 minute classes the rest of the year.

Cycling 41:00 intensity: (3:11 @0) + (11:39 @1) + (22:46 @2) + (3:24 @3) 6.37 mi (6:26 / mi) +29m 6:21 / mi
ahr:112 max:132

Easy ride to CityTrail Loppet. Took it easy, and still got there too soon. Ended up waiting at the start line in downtown Robbinsdale for nearly 90 minutes. But I had a bench in the sun and made the best of the situation. If you have to sit on a bench in downtown Robbinsdale for 90 minutes, you could not have asked for a better day. And downtown Robbinsdale is actually pretty cute -- who knew. Lots of good looking restaurants to explore some day.
9 AM

Running Trail 1:43:08 intensity: (14 @1) + (9 @2) + (1:57 @3) + (31:45 @4) + (1:09:03 @5) 9.78 mi (10:33 / mi) +52m 10:22 / mi
ahr:164 max:173

City Trail Loppet. Nice event. The course was great. I like the way the loppet people use undeveloped single track for their races. I was a little surprised that I had been on the vast majority of the course. With the exception of bit of roads in downtown Robbinsdale, I've been on the entire course before.

A month ago my training was more on track for this, but things fell apart for a few weeks. But other than being under-trained, it was a great evemt. Even though I've been sick the last week, I don't think it had much effect on my performance. I went about as fast as I could without hurting myself :-)

It was too hot in Tornado Alley... no breeze, hot sun... but was nice by the Quaking Bog and along the lakes.

The finish line was a little wacky. The had a 180 degree turn in the last 100 meters. When I frist saw the timing pads on the ground for the finsih I made my way to them, crossed over, stopped my garmin and started walking... until someone yelled "keep going". I looked over to the left and there was the real finsih line. I was ready to throttle someone! Hopefully they will change that for next year.

Free brats and beer at the end.

Cycling 44:59 intensity: (1 @0) + (1:23 @1) + (23:10 @2) + (20:25 @3) 8.12 mi (5:32 / mi) +71m 5:24 / mi
ahr:126 max:139

Ride home from CityTrail Loppet. It was a struggle to get started (after the running race, brat and beer), but it got better. Made it home in one piece.

Running Trail (mostly grass) 39:01 intensity: (1:48 @0) + (2:05 @1) + (4:02 @2) + (10:43 @3) + (20:23 @4) 3.18 mi (12:15 / mi) +32m 11:53 / mi
ahr:138 max:157

Easy run around the neighborhood. Still have a cold, but want some confidence I could hobble through 10 mile on Sunday.

(With hindsight, I actually felt worse on Friday. Not a good sign)

Wednesday May 14, 2014 #

Cycling 35:00 [1] 6.0 mi (5:50 / mi)

Easy bike to Walgreen's.

Note
weight:160.8lbs

I'm supposed to run the CITYTRAIL Loppet 10 mile Sunday, but still have a cold and fever. Hopefully I will be well enough to hobble through it by then.

ahr:161 max:172

MDAR Mudball. Been a few years since I did this one. Good day.

I was 56th out of 100.... next year's goal is to break into the top half. I was about 90 seconds ahead of Rick Recker. I never thought that would happen but I guess everyone slows down eventually. He is 69 now. I hope I look that good and run that fast at 69.
