Winter Triathlon National Championships :-)
5k run on mostly pavement: 29:26 (3.43 miles, pace 8:36)
Transition: 1:44
17k fat bike on snow, ice, grass, pavement: 1:09:02 (11.95 miles, pace 5.8 minutes/mile, speed: 10.34 mph)
Transition: 0:39
2 mile run (was supposed to be 7k ski) on ski trails: 17:41 (1.96 miles, pace 9:02)

Good fun, even with the lack of snow. Skiing after run and bike would have been interesting. Unfortunately the skate deck was solid ice with a dusting of snow over it, so no way we could ski.

They had five year age groups for the National Championships with top 3 placing in each. Few age groups even had three people. But the mens' 50-54 and 55-59 had 4+, and I suspect, more than any other age groups.

Plenty of MNOC people could have been on this podium if they would have shown up. I think I heard next year it will be the world championships -- but maybe not?!

Results:
http://www.frontrunnerusa.com/wp-content/uploads/2...

49th of 62 overall
53rd first run (and I thought I went out too fast)
48th bike
39th second run

No podium - they don't make 'em big enough for me!

6th of 6 in 55-59 (and I'm not actually quite 55 yet - sigh) First place in that age group came in 6th overall ... he drove in from Wyoming -- clearly he is the real deal and deserves to be called national champion!

Pre-loppet. 35th out of 40 men. Average time was 50:32 (Tom P won overall by a healthy margin). Course was hard and fast. Glad I did it, even though I hadn't had any exercise in the last week.

It was hilly. I managed to stay upright with my feet on the pedals the entire time, and not DFL, so very happy with the result. I was dressed too warm but it was bearable.

Weird thing happened: I had a couple panic attacks the first two loops on the way up the biggest hill. It was claustrophobia-like. I had on my helmet, goggles and balaclava. I was breathing hard, freaked out and wanted to rip off my helmet and goggles --- very strange. After the second time I told myself I was going to quit when I finished that loop -- it was that bad. But in the intervening five minutes I calmed down and finished without another incident.

Lap splits 14:02, 14:32, 14:59, 15:00. I would prefer they went down rather than up, but I'll take it as is.

I walked from the natural history museum to our hotel in Times Square. I recorded it just to see what it would look like. Stopped at Starbucks on the way, and at one of the theaters to pick up tickets.

GPS does not work well in Manhattan. Google map directions do not work well either because they often don't know where you are, or which direction you are already going.
