Orienteering race 1:29:11 [4] 5.76 mi (15:29 / mi) +291m 13:23 / mi

Not sure why Garmin did not record my heart rate. It was definitely beating.

Good fun. Made three big mistakes, but luckily not enough impact to ruin the day.

23 to 6 - Julia and I looked for the control on the wrong bridge for about 30 seconds - duh!
14 to 21 - I did not aim off well crossing the bottom of the ravine and went by the control on the west side. I went too high and hit the trail far above. Thus had to come back down. That cost at least a couple minutes.
21 to 22 - I went up the ravine north of 22. Had to back track a couple times because of icy slopes and trees. After talking with others I realized I should have just gone up the spur. Lost at least a couple minutes here too.
22 to 15 - I didn't look at the control description, and even though the feature was green on the map, and I've visited that tree many times, I was looking for a ruin. Luckily that mistake only cost me a few seconds of bewilderment.
8 to 17 -- I went up the slope to the west of 8. There was a nice deer trail at the beginning, but later bushwhacked through buckthorn for quite a way.
I seemed to be on pace with three other people around me at the time, so an OK choice. But with hindsight I think it would have been better to go down the road and up the slope to 13, then 17, then 12.
11 to 20 - I went up the steep slope to 20. At that point I had not seen 9 on the map. I should have gone to 9 first and I would have had time to pick up 19 and 5 as well.

Morning run with Jeannine and Eric.

On Monday Ken told us they are moving to San Diego. On Wednesday Jeannine said they are moving down by the Shriner's hospital -- still in St. Paul. Two devastating blows for our neighborhood running group. Those two and Eric are there almost every M,W,F. I'm the least consistent, but have relied on their steadfastness to get me out the door early in the morning.
