Sunday Jan 6 | ||
| Classic skiing 56:00 [1]9.5 km (5:54 / km) | ||
| easy classic ski. They delayed the start to the team sprint 2.5 hours, and since we were driving back to rochester that night, we decided to just skip it, since it wasn't a NRL race or anything like that. went for an easy ski, which felt great on a beat-up body, and then got in the car and drove 14 hours until we hit Rochester. Long day. | ||
Saturday Jan 5 | ||
| Running 10:00 [2]1.0 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| Not that it worked before the classic race, but another easy shakeout run. | ||
| Skate skiing race 3:26 [5]1.3 km (2:38 / km) | ||
| skate sprints. Decent warmup, 10 min L1 testing skis, 15 min L1/2 skiing on the 5k course, just getting warmed up, 5 min L3, a couple min L1, 2x 1 min all out. My body felt flat. It was tough to get motivated. Started pretty fast, overall, I felt like my movements were snappier than I expected and I had good speed, but there wasn't much power behind it. I tucked most of the downhill; it felt faster than a free skate. Carried my speed well through the U-turn into the rolling uphill, here is where I really felt like I just had no power. I could V2 alright, and it looked alright, but it wasn't really moving fast, and I couldn't get my hands moving as quickly on the steep little hill as I'd been able to yesterday. It sucks to be in a sprint race and realize that you're going slowly. Anyway, 8 seconds out of the heats, 65th place, and I have some ideas of what to work on. I shouldn't have expected much better than that, having not raced at a national competition in 4 years, but still, I had hoped for more. Team sprint tomorrow... hopefully Jess and I will surprise ourselves! God I'm tired. | ||
| Skate skiing warm up/down 1:12:00 [2]10 km (7:12 / km) | ||
Friday Jan 4 | ||
| Skate skiing 30:00 [1]6 km (5:00 / km) | ||
| skiing around on the sprint course, a couple pickups, a couple starts, feeling somewhat coordinated, but totally exhausted. | ||
Thursday Jan 3 | ||
| Running 10:00 [1]1.0 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| Classic skiing race 36:30 [5]10 km (3:39 / km) | ||
| 10k classic at nationals. Bad race, I was Tired. Had a plan of skiing negative splits, but I realized I couldn't go any slower on the first lap without walking. That is not a good thing to realize. I basically started slowly and got slower, but at least I didn't drop out. Probably could have used more kick, but it wasn't really worth complaining about. I should have tested wax on the course instead of the "wax testing" area, though, because the tracks were much more glazed on course. I guess that is what you get from >1000 skier laps...
Probably got most tired from too much skiing too fast yesterday. I also have a hunch that I've screwed myself by overtraining, and I can eek out a fast race or two by tapering but then I get knocked down again.

Wednesday Jan 2 | ||
| Classic skiing 57:00 [2]10 km (5:42 / km) | ||
| easy ski on the course. Second lap was a little harder, chatting away, more in L2. Feeling pretty recovered though. | ||
Tuesday Jan 1 | ||
| Skate skiing race 15:58 [5]5 km (3:12 / km) | ||
| Nationals 5k skate race. 5k races are hard, because they're sprints, but they're long enough to kill you. Started bib #109 (197 starters, or something like that), and went really hard out of hte start since there was a really long downhill before any of the climbing started. Made up probably ~5-10 seconds on my 15 second girl by the bottom of the hill, and felt pretty recovered starting the climb.
My goal for this race was to pace myself, mostly by not hammering the first climb, since it was long. I skied rhythmically, trying to stay relaxed and light and quick on my feet. I was still somewhat worked at the top, but I wasn't feeling flooded in lactic acid or dreaming of the finish. I maybe lost a couple seconds (think: 10 places) on the next downhill, because I didn't work the corners quite as much as I would have liked, and I didn't make up any more time on Heather Zimmerman (my 15 second girl). The second climb was more gradual and rolling, but a lot harder than the first, in my opinion, since there were so many more transitions and so many more opportunities to be using V2. Which I may or may not have done. Got close to Heather by the top of the steepish hill, and then the course went downhill and looped around back up, and I almost lost it, going wide into the powdery snow. It was snowing the whole race, but the course stayed packed, with some powdery fluff outside of hte main place where people were skiing. I got up the final hill of the second climb, and got into the downhill. God was I ready to sit in a tuck. I worked the crest pretty well, and caught Heather by the bottom, along with another little junior girl. The temptation was pretty strong to just ski behind Heather in to the finish, but I knew that I should pass her, so went around and ended up putting another couple seconds on her. The finish was a gradual uphill, and I really didn't think that I would be able to V2 any longer up that thing. I have no idea how I made it to the finish, but I was completely worked. Finally, a race where I felt like death but it was due to skiing fast, not feeling deathly. Ended up 66th, ahead of many of my usual rivals, and a lot closer to some fast girls than normal. 30 seconds behind Elsa Sargent... I'll take it. =)
