paddling 31:09 [3]

trekking 3:06:23 [3]

mntn bike 4:05:53 [3]

The race was another terrific Storm Event.

It was unfortunate that the paddle had to be cut short. Not sure of the reason. I think we did just under 50% of the original total distance... and we almost missed the start!?!?!

Despite me wasting time trying to punch our CP card on a punch that was sealed shut (not required to punch CP1!!) we managed to get off the water in the front 25% I think (first coed 4's of the water). The shortened paddle meant a little extra biking and probably 2-3 km of extra running, but overall I think it was a wash - time wise - for our team.

For me it was a perfect way to start. First paddle since WT last fall, but I still knew that would be my strongest discipline. So I was able to ease into the race, get the legs a little warm-up on the short bike to CP2B and endure less knee pain on the run as a result. We didn't run hard and I think our clockwise route worked out well for us making it efficient to do a few bushwhacks to save distance and remain time neutral vs longer trail runs.

I think we were second co-ed fours heading back out on the bike. Were it not for the top team being much faster on their feet and the bike, we surely would have caught them! :-)

The biking was fun and fair for this group of racers. A little bit of tech and a lot of road.

We held out 2nd place (cat.) through the bike and next two treks, despite my glacial running pace. My quads tightened up after the first run and then bike so the next two runs sucked.. the tight quads caused knee pain.

Back on the bikes for the ride to the finish it seemed pretty basic. Ahem....

After cp 5 we had our more technical/ mudfest section and I gapped. There were two CP's between CP's 5 and 6. In my mind they were just there to ensure teams did that section and didn't ride around. I wasn't even lookkng for the cp's ... just assuming they would be on the trail... bad assumption.

We blew by CP 32 by about 3km of mucky trail. It cost about 40 minutes to retrieve that cp and we stretched our 100 yard rule by a lot... not certain how much ... Will and I dropped Mike and Laura and got them on the way back.... Maybe 2 km? maybe 2.5.. :-)

2 Coed 4's passed us during this time. When I got back I told Sean we Stretched (broke) the 100 m rule, but we'd fallen off the podium so ... whatever :-)

Great day, fun times ... cold at the end.... cold camping!!!
Cheers
