trekking 8:30:00 [3] 35.0 km (14:34 / km) +36000m 2:22 / km

Will and I started “The Lockdown” today. ... and it’s official... he hates me ;-)

Part of the race is 2 X 3hrs on your feet of which one of those 3hr legs should be mostly off road. We decided the road running sux so did about 3 km on road and the rest in the bush.

Started at GHL marina which is about 2.5 km from the start line of WT 2018. Followed the road until approx the point where ‘most’ of the teams jumped into the bush for that first leg of WT. Instead of heading straight south we went more south east for the point where the 2nd leg of that race (mntn bike) crossed the highway.

We then did the bike leg in reverse and the trek leg in reverse (more or less) and ended by swimming across the mouth of minors bay, back to GHL marina.

The bugs were Atrocious!!!! Mozzies AND FDF’s. I cannot possibly explain in writing just how bad the FDF’s were. I need to partially act it out!! I can literally say that I killed over a thousand of those little F’rs on my head... and unlike far too high a percentage of the population, I know what literally means.... literally :-).

At one point Will was so miserable from the heat and bugs that he just began ranting.... and the situation was so bad that I could help but laugh hysterically... which caused me to eat a few bugs and gag. Then I tried to sing him happy birthday (24 today) and got another taste of FDF.

There was little joy in this trek. We had four swims, which we prolonged for heat and bug relief. There were a few beautiful views but we couldn’t slow down to enjoy them. We were supposed to get pictures of several features, but the bush was too thick to make some of the pics meaningful and stopping to get my phone out SUCKED. Needed two hands for bug killing almost the entire time... even looking at the map or compass was a challenge.

Should have made this our night section!! Probably spent about and hour of the 8.5 recuperating in/under water.

Will’s GPS watch said >35 km and .... 36,000 meters elevation :-). Turns out when we swim the barometer change from putting his watch under water and bringing it out gives huge elevation fluctuations... probably did about 5,000 meters per swim :-0

Tomorrow is mntn bike day. 4hrs ‘road’ and 4 hours trail.... maybe some paddling too!
