Tour de pete. Sebba, Jase and Kez turned up. wasn't quite a cold as expected but plenty of headwinds. Bit of a leisurely start with kez turning up late, then the light dropping off the back of my bike. Kezza and Jase were taking a back seat until we hit some tailwinds. The sebba/devil train got working on horse park road to add a bit of respectability to the pace. Excellent coffee at Sfoglia.

Bilbys intervals - just did medium set of 10x400m 30 sec rest between. For the first 8 there was a good group of juniors to run with, relected in the splits. Running in lane 3 mostly, track is getting pretty cut up at the moment. Splits, 1.22, 1.22, 1.23, 1.24, 1.25, 1.25, 1.26, 1.24, 1.27, 1.28.

Bilbys intervals. Set was 2x5min (~1.4k), 2min easy, 2x4 min (~1.1k), 90s easy, 2x2 min(~550m) 60s easy. Went a touch too quick on the first one and paid for it for the rest of the set, distances a bit approximate due to lane changing.

Right at the end of the warm down lap of the ovals the forecast evening rain arrived, in bucket loads. Not for the first time this year I was on the bike so got soaked on the way home - although it wasn't as bad as the night of the big hailstorm when I got a flat at civic pool and had to walk all the way back...

Duathlon 59:38 [5] 25.0 km (2:23 / km)

Hadn't got round to entering any of the weekend o races so decided to do the duathlon. Format was 2/9/2/9/2. As this is measured by triathletes the distances are approximate. On the bike computer I had the bike leg at 9.5 km. Choosing the right clothing was a bit of a challenge as the air was cold - choices ranged from shorts and running vest to full winter riding kit. I went for short cycle top, ear warmers and gloves. If it was any colder a thermal would have been good.
Didn't have much of a race plan and and hadn't cycled for 4 weeks and only done a few runs. Was about 6th after the first run and managed a good transition and overtook a couple of people trying to get into pre-clipped shoes. Had never done this bike loop before, and it had quite a sharp hill in it. Three guys on fast bikes went past, including one who needed something to hold his running tights up. Managed to keep in touch with them overtaking them and getting re-overtaken for the two loops of the bike course. Pulled back a place in the second run leg and had another good transition to the bike. The three fast bike guys were just in front but come the second lap they pulled away on the hilly bit. Coming out of transition to the final run, big Gaz had sneaked in front - turned out he'd put toe-clips on his bike and done the whole thing in running shoes. I went past him straight away but he managed to hang on until the turn round - keeping up a commentary about how close he was and wasn't going to let anyone get away with going past him. I put the foot down at the turn and found I had a bit left and soon had a bit of peace and quiet. Overall was 8th and won my age group - so not a bad morning's work. Completely forgot to take any splits, but total ride time was 36 mins, so allowing 4x30 sec for transitions, runs were 22 mins. As a post race bonus there were a bunch of CIT trainee girls to massage tired legs - not bad...
