Duathlon race 2:20:00 [4] 55.0 km (2:33 / km)
shoes: Brooks racer st2

Decided to have a crack at the last duathlon of the winter. Hadn't done any of the rest of the series and was a bit rusty as a result. The course was an undulating 10k run on fire trails at stromlo followed by 2 laps of a 20 ride along cotter road then another 5 k run. Didn't feel on fire at the start so just focused on making the run solid, got around the first run in about 40 minutes. Getting on the bike wasn't good, there was enough uphill out of transition to make it hard to get initial momentum, then it was onto urriara road. The combination of a strengthening headwind and the undulating road made it hard going, and it never felt like I was moving quickly. This was confirmed by the number of carbon fibre disc wheels going past. Gary went past after the first turn, so I knew there'd be no way of catching him on the last run. From there was a case of hanging on. Was getting plenty of cramps in the calves and later on pain in the left ITB when I tried to ride on the aero bars. Had also made an elementary error of just having a bottle of electrolyte drink, a couple of swigs of that made me feel in danger of a spew. Legs felt like jelly getting off the bike, and stated the run at a shuffle. Gradually opened up a bit, but didn't hit any great speed, and lost a couple more places. Need to get some more power work on the bike before the tri season and some brick sessions or there'll be more of this in store...
