Note

Tried to enter the kepler challenge at 4.30 am. It must have sold out in a minute, I've got a place on the waitlist but judging by the numbering I'm about 200. Might have to choose another goal race.

Running race (Crossy) 35:08 [5] 8.81 km (3:59 / km) +170m 3:38 / km
shoes: kayano 17

A comeback to saturday cross country - today was at callum brae, which I've run on a couple of times before. The course is two loops of 4.5 km that climbs up a bit of a hill, traverses along for a while then down followed by a flat section back to the start that is longer than you expect.
Started out just in front of jase and tried not to overdo it too much on the first lap. Overtook a few runners who'd clearly started out too fast on the hilly section, then tried to keep my legs turning over once we were back down on the flat. At the turn I had 20 metres or so on jase which I wasn't sure was going to be enough. It was a lot harder climbing the hill the second time, but I did get past someone on here. Running down the hill I could hear heavy breathing and footsteps rapidly approaching and figured it had to be jase doing a surge. So i kept pushing on, eventually this short guy goes past, not jase. Still had a bit of speed on the last flat section but was starting to get tired so focused on keeping leg speed going. Surprisingly had a negative split on the second lap. Pretty happy with the time, which was less than 1.30 slower than last year when I was in much better shape and about 1.30 better than 2 years ago.

Running warm up/down 6:31 [3] 0.68 mi (9:31 / mi) +1m 9:28 / mi
shoes: kayano 17

A briskish warmup with jase before the start then a warm down with jase, abby and zoe. Not sure the warm-down was really troggable as it was largely at walking pace.

Running intervals (Bilbys) 29:03 [5] 7.2 km (4:02 / km)
shoes: kayano 17

There was a choice of two sets, a short fast one and 1kms. Mace and fast kate were doing the short ones but I decided that 1kms would be a good idea so did 6.
Splits:
3.30 1.06
3.33 1.11
3.35 1.16
3.37 1.22
3.37 1.24
3.37 1.10

Set off a bit too fast, but managed to hang on until the end. Pretty good session

Bilbys warm up 35:00 [3]
shoes: kayano 17

Got there a bit late so did a half lap before the stretches. Ran round a big lap with emily who was the only person left running when I had finished.

Running (WNT) 30:00 [3]
shoes: kayano 17

WNT from sanders place with just sanders. I felt like I was getting a cold so we did a lap of o'connor instead of intervals then had some delicious veggie soup afterwards.

Running intervals (Bilbys) 33:00 [5] 8.0 km (4:08 / km)
shoes: nike lunareclipse

Quite a big group at bilbys tonight. The ground is still soaked, I'm not sure if this is over-watering or just no drainage, the track isn't too bad but doing a big lap of the ovals involves a lot of dodging puddles and holes. The set was 1600(400), 4x 400(100), 1600(400), 4x 400(100), i had Liz for company, and despite her claiming to be slow from a lack of training was pushing the pace right through the set. I'd been reading blairs trog last week and saw he was doing 82 for his 400s so thought I'd better lift my game as last week they were closer to 90s.

Splits were:
5.52 2.16
1.23 37
1.21 40
1.20 44
1.20 47
6.03 2.42
1.22 42
1.23 45
1.22 46
1.21

This was the best set of intervals I've done for a while - expect legs will be a bit sore tomorrow.

Bilbys warm up warm up/down 40:00 [3]
shoes: nike lunareclipse

Usual stuff, run-throughs with mace and a big lap at the end with guy and liz

(rest day)

have now lost track of how long I've been doing these, running isn't going too badly but they clearly don't help with orienteering

Orienteering race 1:52:17 [3] 8.2 km (13:42 / km)
shoes: brooks cascadia

AL event at castle hill. Not my favourite map as it usually involves going up and down a lot of steep hills and today was no exception. A chasing start with fish and acejase to begin with. I was going OK through the first 4 going over the hill to 4, perhaps not quite optimal but not too bad. Then had a total stuff up moment going to 5, should have been an easy leg, through the start and then down to the control, but somehow I drifted low then decided I was too high, ending up at 14. Lost about 6 mins here, then next leg was a long one, I took a low route along the side of the hill which sucked as there were a lot of brambles and thistles along with running sideways on the steepish slope covered in slippery grass. Eventually got to the control OK but by then the intensity had dropped and it was just a plod round the rest of the course, which seemed to be all upwards towards the end. The main positive was that I got a long run done.
Good to sit around in the sun afterwards and catch up with fish and listen to acejase recount how he'd powered up the hills.

Orienteering warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Run/walk to the start - which was up a hill
