Orienteering race 31:49 [4] 5.88 km (5:25 / km) +176m 4:43 / km
shoes: brooks cascadia

Summer series on o'connor and bruce ridges. Bit of a delay at the start while my thumb starred in fatrat's film, then headed off. Took the straight line on most of the legs, and no real problems as might be expected in what's pretty much my backyard.

Orienteering warm up/down 40:00 [3]
shoes: brooks cascadia

Was about to head home when gramps nobbled me to collect the controls at the far end of the course, so got a long warm down run.

Running intervals 21:00 [4] 5.0 km (4:12 / km)

Tuesday intervals - this was a whistle set which I did as a recovery run not pushing very hard during the efforts but keeping a quicker than usual pace in the recoveries. I just did the short set which was 2x 4min, 3 min, 2 min, 1 min which was definitely enough.
Afterwards chatted to the viking, who was talking about a random who'd got on the back of the saturday medium bunch a couple of weeks ago - I think this might have been grantm.

Running race 1:39:19 [4] 21.13 km (4:42 / km) +776m 3:58 / km

Deep space half marathon - the course for this race had changed a bit from last year, missing out the climb to the collimation tower and instead going all the way to the old orroral tracking station and back again. After the start there was a little group with BigD, a young guy in blue and this bloke in a red shirt with really worn out running shoes. I was wondering if these two knew what they were doing, especially red top who didn't look like a runner - turned out he was an xc skier who's trying to get to the olympics. I got dropped a bit on the downhill as I wanted to conserve my legs a bit, but caught redtop again when it flattened out, and still had BigD and bluetop in sight. The section through orroral valley was really pleasant and gave a bit of recovery before the business end of the run which is the ascent back up to honeysuckle - a definite 'sorting hill'. I had a gel at the turn (this was a cadel gel because I couldn't find any normal ones) and went past bluetop. Redtop was right on my tail - so much that he hit my shoes a couple of times and I was beginning to wonder If I'd be able to drop him. BigD had cleared out and was out of sight by the bottom of the hill. I focused on running the whole way up, and once we hit the really steep section redtop was broken and I was running by myself. Towards the top I got a glimpse of BigD so I had made a bit of ground but not enough. Finally saw the gate that marks the summit and then ran hard down to the finish. Good hit-out before the triple tri. I thought the time wasn't too bad, but it was put in perspective when john winsbury finished the marathon in 3h09.
