Really good sprint at newcastle university - but I wasn't exactly sprinting. No major mistakes, but missed quite a few route choices including not seeing the highlighted tunnel on the map and running past 5 (admittedly in a dark passageway).

The middle was on a old coal mining area - the program suggested that this was going to be pretty bogan and we could fully expect to be run down by hoons or find the controls on fire. I started at the same time as lizzie - so got to see her heading off to 2 before I stumbled across 1. From here I started to think a bit more and got into the map. Matt parton caught me around 5, he was moving fast, so I hung on for a few controls until he slowed a bit then started to orienteer again. We had an encounter with a bunch of trail bikes crossing a big track, but that was the only bogan activity of the day. Had a bit of a lead at 14 then took a straight choce to 16 and we were back together. Mid-field, which was good for a middle, but a harder run than I'd expected. Quite enjoyed this map, which was different to anything I've run on before.

Post-drive run with lizzie after arriving in Newcastle. Not a bad drive apart from finding australia's worst rest area on the F3. We ran along roads which had no lights or footpaths, presumably the bogans had shot out the lights and no-one here walks anywhere

It seemed like a shame to waste a sunny day so I went the actrun lunchtime run - which turned out to be intervals on something called the floosie loop around the grass near the high court. Did 3x5min efforts with stuey - the first one was a guided tour of the loop (which is had quite a few turns in it) then the second two were at a higher pace. Distances were 1.28, 1.36, 1.36. There was a bit of smoke in the air from a burn on blackie which got a bit worse running back towards csiro.

Cockies pide night run from my place with lizzie, shep and grantm. To shep's first so he could get his light then a lap of lyneham ridge and onto o'connor ridge. We came up with a new format for long NOL races prompted by the 18kms we'll be running on sunday, that would let runners stop early but still score points behind runners doing the whole course.
Miss jones, ALJ and marymac joined us for pide afterwards. Reading the notes for sunday it seems that nothing on the map apart from contours can be trusted, and if you stop to read the map you'll get eaten by meat-ants or run down by bogans on their way to add a new car wreck to the map.

Quite a long run up the hill to the start.

ACT long at glendale. The first control set the tone for the first part of the course, which was through a part of the map that is pretty overgrown with prickly bushes. Took a while on this control going into the thick stuff one too early. Went flying when I tripped on a root just after, but luckily no damage. A group formed pretty early on with ecmo then shep. After stuffing around for a while at 6 it became more of a long run. Took the track on the long leg with shep while ecmo headed off into the 'detail not mapped'. Along the way we came across acejase and miss jones heading back to the start and I learnt about the process of pouring a slab. As we headed into 10, ecmo appeared out of the scrub, looking a bit more tired than we were. The rest of the way was on the open area of the map which was much easier going - cruised round alternating the lead a few times. Quite a good run once we got into the second half.
