Orienteering race 1:10:41 [4] 7.9 km (8:57 / km)
Local orienteering race - probably my last orienteering race this year so I was out to enjoy myself.
Got there a bit stressed because I managed to catch completely the wrong bus and it took me ages to figure out where I was supposed to go. I thought I would miss my start but when I got there, I found out that due to some technical problem, all the starts were two hours later than scheduled. Phew. I had a good pre-race carbo-loading of cakes and other sweet things at the local shop, with everybody else, which was a lot of fun and nice to be inside for a while because it was bloody freezing.
The race itself was in a nice area - I was surprised to see so many hilly bits on the map, because in general it's really flat around here. The course setter also did a great job of using the interesting bits of the map and put in some nice long legs with several route choices.
I was happy with my start - slow and steady to the first couple of controls but no problems. I took a wide track option on the first long leg which was easy navigating but maybe I should have been a bit more daring and gone straight through the forest. I noticed on that leg that the areas marked "green" on the map were in reality not so green because it's winter now. So on the second long leg I was a bit braver and took a few short cuts through the forest. Had no problems with navigation and was very proud of myself at one of the later controls, because I came across a group of people wandering around with no idea, but I managed to read the bigger features on the map properly and found the control quickly. Overall I was very happy because I felt like I was reading the map on the move the whole way - a great way to finish the orienteering year. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself exactly mid field in the results (eighth out of sixteen) sandwiched between two of my clubmates - less than three minutes behind one, and four seconds ahead of the other. It was a good race.
