Orienteering race 1:10:25 [5]

Today's race was a piece of cake compared to yesterday. I zipped round the D19 course and felt very good the whole way. No big mistakes today either. Only one small error where I ran into some green from a clearing too early, but quickly realised this and immediately ran a bit higher to a nearby knoll to correct my direction. And I lost a few seconds helping a Czech man who had no idea where he was. I was still a long way down in the results but very happy overall.

Today's race was interesting because of its location. We started on the German side of the hills, but the start triangle was directly on the border between the Czech Republic and Germany, which is marked by little stone posts through the forest. I discovered after the race that I ran across the border several times and didn't even realise. Great stuff.

Orienteering race 2:11:46 [5]

Took advantage of a spare seat in the club's minibus to head down the the Czech Republic for the SAXBO (Sachish-Bohmisch) 2-day event in the corner of Germany that borders Poland and the Czech Republic.

Today's race was in spectacular terrain with massive hills and giant rock formations and cliff faces. I enjoyed every bit of it, I think it's fantastic orienteering country. I ran the long D21 course and was very slow over the rocks and hills, as my time shows, but I wasn't last. I battled with the map and terrain the whole way and was pretty well buggered by the end of the long leg in the middle which ran nearly the whole length of the map. I made one substantial error right at the end where I ran too far past one control and it took me a while to figure out what I had done. But otherwise it was heaps of fun. The hills are really steep down there. All the Czech orienteers seemed very fit and fast.

Run 1:20:00 [3]

If I got paid every time somebody yelled "schnell schnell" (or something similar) at me when I am running, I would be very rich. But fortunately for every runner-basher I come across on a run, there are twice as many friendly runners.

Legs felt OK but a bit weary and took a while to get going. Weather is tops at the moment.

Run 45:00 [3]

Accidentally nearly ran into a film set today. I was running along a lane near the edge of the forest, turned a corner, and was astonished to see the normally peaceful road near the church and graveyard ablaze with lights, camera and action. It could well have been the next hollywood blockbuster but was more likely to be the German equivalent of Neighbours.
