PTOC at Blue and Grey Park. Tom Hanley set the course.

It was chilly (19F at the start) with a little bit of windy. We've had a mix of sleet and freezing rain that made the footing and woods different than usual. Some of the footing was slippery, but some was good. The corn fields are usually very hard work to get through. But the rows were flat and solid ice/sleet - easy to run on. With spiked shoes they were good. It easy to run parallel to the rows, but crossing rows was harder because you had to step higher to get over the stocks.

I felt ok running. I got tired and wasn't going well up the hills. I wasn't really pushing enough. Some of that is because of the footing and paying attention to that. I lost some time crossing a stream trying to avoid getting my feet wet and a bit worried about falling through the ice.

My navigation was passive. I don't think I really lost much, but I also wasn't sharp and wasn't active with my map reading. That always costs some time even if there aren't any real booms.

Dean H. beat me by ~6 minutes.

Fun, but my feet got cold after I ran.

running 20:00 [2]

I wasn't feeling very energetic, but I got out the door and shuffled around a bit.

We had a mix of sleet and freezing rain last night. Things were slick, but shoes with metal spikes made it easy.

It was a bit cold (16F) and there was a bit of wind.

running 40:00 [2]

I ran on West Campus.

I left work a little early because things were getting slippery (rain/sleet/ice falling) and I wanted to pick up Mary and get home before things got bad. It turned out, the roads were dry once I got a few miles from the office. The forecast doesn't look too good for tonight and tomorrow's commute.

I didn't see any deer or coyotes on West Campus.

We went to the Tall Grass Prairie National Preserve. We visited very briefly the first year it was open, when there was only short trail (and it was a hot day). There are now something like 40+ miles of trail.

We explored - a mix of running (downhills and some flats when we had a tailwind) and walking (up hills and with the head wind). I made a map - 1:15000 with trails, streams and some vegetation. I read it pretty much the whole way. It would make for a fun orienteering venue. It isn't especially difficult because you can see so far. But there could be some route choice options and there are ways to make things a little tricky. Also, bison could add some complexities.

Lots of fun.
