Note

Mary and Blair were both busy, so I went to the 2019 38 North Fest kick off as the OK rep. It was interesting and ok. I always prefer being alone and outdoors over in a crowd of people at a brewery, but it was still a good thing to do.

They are hosting hike/run around Clinton Lake on March 30. That brings back some memories of when we did that when Magnus and Sanna were in Lawrence. It also conflicts with the rescheduled Slough Creek orienteering.

Going to the kick off meant I didn't run. And I heard from Cristina-bot about that.

running 40:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (10:00 @4)

I ran on West Campus and included 3x HE. I guess it felt pretty good.

We had some neighborhood drama this morning. When I was getting dressed I heard fire trucks and when I looked out the window, a neighbor's house was burning. It seems like everyone got out and nobody was hurt. The neighborhood still smells of smoke about 12 hours later.

I designed a course at Sunflower Nature Park with lots of controls and lots of direction changes. I shuffled through the course on the way home from work.

It was fun. Navigation was mostly good. The footing was a mix of ok, muddy, sloppy, ice and old snow.

Put out a few markers at the Overlook and then worked the computer. I'd planned to do some more running afterwards. But, instead of running, I just picked up a couple of controls, helped pack up, and stopped at Jade Garden with Gene, Blair and Mary.)

Blair set the courses and did a good job. He made good use of the small area. I like when a course setter has an overall idea/concept in mind. For example, part of Blair's design was to keep the orienteers off the trails (both to avoid getting muddy and to avoid causing "damage" to the trails). He also recognized that we often get first-timers at the overlook and took that into account in designing the courses. We got a couple of first timers, but I'm sure we'd have had more if the temp was more normal (I think the normal high is 46F). I made one suggestion that added a control to make the course a bit longer and that made Mary have to run up the same hill twice.

The weather was probably fine for running, but it was cold at the computer. The wind was steady and a bit strong. The temp was right below freezing. The concrete at the shelter held the cold. The wind was a chore.

I saw a few bald eagle while I put out the controls. Lisa G did the course and saw 5 at the control nearest the lake shore.

I ran a training course at Rockcrusher. I made an effort to pick routes that were largely in the woods. That was good, but also a bit more work than a regular course at Rockcrusher.

There was still a bit of snow on the ground. A light drizzle fell the entire run. The temp was around 40F. So the snow was slushy. Without neoprene socks, my feet would have frozen.

My orienteering was mostly ok. I had a bit of slop on one leg after I'd been out about 55 minutes.

I think Matt was running the south shore trails. I spotted a parked car that looked like his. I saw two sets of fresh running shoe tracks.

There were a bunch of eagles on the ice along the dam. I counted 8 on the way out.
