Orienteering (Woods) 23:00 [2]***

Warmup on the map.
Orienteering (Woods) 20:27 [4]*** 2.5 km (8:11 / km) +95m 6:52 / km

Emmenegger Test Loop (1:10). PR. A boom on 12 cost me a sub-20 run, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to do that over the winter when the vegetation opens up more.

Test Loop - Splits

Tuesday Nov 6

Cycling (Road) 57:00 [2]
In to work. Coldest commute so far (35F), but not at all unpleasant as I've dug out all my cold weather gear. I do think I'll need a heavier set of gloves for the winter.
Cycling (Road) 1:30:00 [2]
Back home via Midland. Stiff headwind and chilly, but still quite pleasant.

Monday Nov 5

Cycling (Road) 57:00 [2]
Figured an off day was in order, but Kate needed the car, so I rode in to work. Had breakfast with the Kate & Baby-O, so I didn't head in until 7:00. Traffic was remarkably light and it was nice to ride in the daylight.
Cycling (Road) 1:35:00 [2]
Back home via Kirkwood to pickup some dinner rolls from Great Harvest.
Note
So the string is over. Updated stats:

Days: 35
Days on a map: 35
Total maps: 40
Orienteering maps: 37
Sessions with technical merit: 27
Sessions with near or above threshold effort: 21
Sessions with neither (fluff): 7
Total time navigating: 37 hours 5 minutes
Total controls visited (includes training locations not marked with a flag): 766

Now the big question (as posed by Peter): did it work? Well, certainly not the way I 'd hoped, but as disappointing as the weekend's results were, Friday can be almost completely attributed to being very comforatble reading the map while running fast through the woods. I haven't been very good at that in the past and I did a lot of it last month. That's the funny thing about training; sometimes the unintended consequences are the most significant. At any rate, any month that ends in a National Championship is a good month, so I'd do it all over.

And that brings us to the really good news of the weekend. Upon returning home, Kate and I had a serious conversation (at my request, not hers) about my goals and what it might take to get there. She's been mighty supportive this year and I was concerned her patience might be running a bit thin. Her response (and this is a direct quote): "Take care of the list on the refrigerator and you can do pretty much whatever you want." Now, that's not exactly a blank check - that list has got pretty long so I'll have to cut back a bit just to get it knocked out, but damn, that's about as easy a pass as one could ever hope for. So, we'll try again next year.

Sunday Nov 4

Terrain (Trail) 35:00 [2]
Warmup (25 min)/dn.
Orienteering (Woods) 2:10:00 [3]*** 11.1 km (11:43 / km) +505m 9:32 / km
21c
Somewhat better effort for Day 2 of US Classic Champs at Prince William (1:15), but still pretty lame. Forest was much more open and the terrain was pretty similar to Cuivre River, so I'm not sure why I couldn't put together a better run here. Just sloppy in general with one really bad boom on 16.

Day 2 Blue - Splits

Saturday Nov 3

Terrain (Trail) 25:00 [2]
Warmup.
Orienteering (Woods) 3:01:00 [3]*** 13 km (13:55 / km)
20c
A rather pathetic effort at US Champs (IOF Long) at Prince William (1:15). After booming 4 of the first 5, I decided to make it a training run and spent the rest of the course trying to make sense of the map rather than moving quickly. Walked a few legs, but mostly jogged easy. By midway through the course I was reading things better and ran fairly clean from 11 on (albeit, still at a pretty easy pace). Pretty disappointing, but at least I got in some good practice.

Friday Nov 2

Event: US Champs

Orienteering (Woods) 52:00 [2]***
21c
Jogging around in the model area hitting control points from a bunch of directions and checking out the mapping. Includes running the model course (.9K, 8 controls) at close to competition speed (7:09). Also includes finishing off my warmup running around on the grass near the sprint start.
Orienteering (Woods) 18:08 [4]*** 2.7 km (6:43 / km) +95m 5:43 / km
18c
US Sprint Champs at Prince William Forest (1:5). Sit down first. You sitting? OK, I won M40+. Whacky.
C • 40+ 4
Orienteering (Woods) 45:00 [2]***
11c
Model event for the classic course on a tiny snippet of the Prince William map (1:15). Ran a few legs hard to get used to the rather trashy woods, but mostly poked around looking at the mapping of vegetation. Seems pretty good, but it's hard to read at speed. 10:00/K will be about as quick as I can go and stay in contact. Might not even be able to maintain that.

Sprint Red - Splits

Thursday Nov 1

Cycling (Road) 1:01:00 [2]
In to work. A bit less pressure on the pedals than usual.
Cycling (Road) 1:37:00 [2]
Back home via Webster Groves...
Orienteering (Bike) 34:00 [2]*
12c
... where I rode a short course on the Webster Groves bike-O map (1:20).
