Orienteering (Woods) 1:08:20 [1] ** 2.8 km (24:24 / km)
12c

Yellow course with Yaya. Some running on the trails, but mostly walking. Navigationally, the course was way to hard for her, so I offered a fair bit of help - basically pointing her along the right linear feature and telling her when to start looking for the control. She did spot most of the controls herself (including one that I completely missed). Physically, she was up to the challenge, although I think it was pretty close to her limit. She was very excited to get first place.

Orienteering race (Woods) 1:37:42 [3] *** 9.7 km (10:04 / km)
15c

Ouch. 10-minute K's won't get it done at Hawn (1:15). Rick Armstrong was course setter and did his usual fine job. A few of the controls were a little bingo-ish (small rock features in areas of considerable undergrowth with few good features nearby), but nothing to complain about (although I guess I just did). Lost 3 minutes on each of the first two, then ran pretty well until 10. Sloppy coming in from there. Second to David Frei.

Note

Yaya played in the playground while I ran my course. I got back to find quite a bit of Oreo residue on her mouth, but she had not injured herself, dipped herself in the stream, or pissed anybody off. Bodes well for future meet attendance. We celebrated by eating at Dewey's Pizza and Cold Stone Creamery (where she ordered a combination that only a kid would love - but she did love it).

Orienteering (Woods) 35:00 [2] ***
13c

Control picking at Babler (1:15). I'm not sure why I thought an early fall run at Babler would be fun after the wettest summer on record. It wasn't, although I was pretty happy with how accurately I was navigating given the visibility. I consoled myself with the thought that Hawn would seem so much nicer by comparison.

Terrain (Trail) 42:00 [2]

Then I remembered that Hawn doesn't need the benefit of a crappy baseline to seem nice, so I bailed out to the trails and just ran along following the map for a while.

Cycling (Road) 56:00 [2]

In to work.

Cycling (Road) 58:00 [2]

Back home. Pretty sure that's a PM PR (traffic is much heavier on the return than at 4:30AM). I guess I really wanted to get home and head to the wineries. Might have something to do with the fact that my employer changed for the second time this week. I'm not really worked up about it, but everybody else is and that's made the week pretty chaotic.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

I don't usually take a day off before a race, but since I was planning on running the day event easy, it seemed like it would be OK to relax.

Cycling (Road) 1:29:00 [3]
weight:165lbs

A top-10 day for sure. As it was also my work from home day, I could wait until conditions were absolutely perfect to ride. Hammered the Tour of Flanders loop in the big ring.

Cycling (Road) 1:01:00 [2]
weight:165lbs

In to work in the 60. Felt a bit beat up. First time riding in tights this fall(around 50F - quite nice). This set of Gatorskins has been a bit of a letdown after the superlative performance of the previous pair. I don't suppose any tire would have survived the nail I rode over this morning, though. Change was problematic with my hands being so cold. The hole isn't too big, but I think I'll replace the tire with something heavier now that the racing season is over (not that I did much of that this year).

Cycling (Road) 1:01:00 [2]

Back from work, again in the 60. Legs felt much better, but the 2 glasses of wine at the happy hour for a couple co-workers who are changing departments might have affected that appraisal. At any rate, I saw no need to push it.

Running (Road) 19:00 [2]

In to work via bus and link.

Running (Road) 1:54:00 [2]

Took the link to Richmond Heights where I bought a new cord for my dryer at Home Depot and a clove of garlic at Whole Foods where a cheerful salesperson insisted that I try some of their Coffee Gelato, so I did. Then ran home.

Running (Road) 45:00 [1]
(rest day)

Walked to bus stop, then from Grand station to work. Also back to Grand station.

Running (Road) 19:00 [2]

After stopping at the grocery store (no pork chops this time), I decided my legs felt good enough to jog the rest of the way home.
