Sunday Feb 4 #

12 AM

Terrain (Trail) 9:03:00 [2] ****
shoes: Lone Peak 3.0

Rocky II.

Decided it would suck to DNF, so I convinced the med staff I would be OK walking and went back out. Walked 16 of the first 18 miles, but then the sun was back up and I decided just to get it done and ran the last seven in.

Full Report.

Terrain (Trail) 18:00:00 [5] ****
shoes: Lone Peak 3.0

Rocky Raccoon. First 75 miles. First lap in a respectable 4:24, but blew up my quads doing it. Just no way to get through all those roots heel striking, and heel striking is what I do in long events. Second lap I switched to walking the super rooty sections which resulted in a 5:30. Still not terrible, but even that wasn't working on lap three. Got back a little before 11PM (17hours) and must have looked as bad as I felt because the med staff pulled me off the course. Spent the next hour in the med tent getting myself back together. (Continued on 2/4 entry).

Terrain (Trail) 50:00 [2] ****
shoes: Venture 6

Checking out the trails for Rocky prior to packet pickup. Super rooty; trip hazards everywhere. Other than that, gentle terrain and pleasant scenery. Looks like the weather is going to suck.

Cycling (Road) 50:00 [2]
(rest day) shoes: Bike: Raleigh RXS (SS/CX)

Easy spin around CC Lake ahead of the flight to Houston. Things feel OK; taking the injury flag off and committing to Rocky.

Wednesday Jan 31 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Would have preferred to get something short in today, but it was getting dark by the time I got out of work. Should be able to do something ahead of the flight tomorrow.

Gym (Weights) 20:00 [5]
(injured)

2 sets, heavy*, upper only.

* I was feeling pretty good about moving the weight up on most of my exercises. Then one of the women from the softball team came along and went through the same set of machines, adding a couple plates to everything I did. I'd say I bet I can run 100 miles faster than her, but that's not really a sure thing right at the moment.

Running (Elliptical) 1:00:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Excite 4

To that end, last quality workout before Rocky. 4x9:00T 1:00R. Just a hair more intensity than last time to make sure it was solid tempo. Legs is still not great but, if I don't do anything too stupid in the next four days, I'd give it better than even odds of making it through 100 miles. It may well be really badly injured at the end of that, but I think it can do it.
