Running race 1:55:00 [4]

Running 45:00 [1]

I decided to run the Bay race just two weeks ago and I was lucky that I had an agent who could get me in to the race.
The feelings I had this year's race were completely different from last year. In 2007, I felt strong the whole way, especially the hills, and I remember thinking about doing a marathon later in 2007.
This year was different. I woke up with a bit of a cold and a sore knee. The cold coming from Lia and the soar knee from too much road running the past two weeks. But, an Ibuprofen later, I headed down, and when looking in the store windows, I had a bit of a Wadd limp, but I noticed my normal running style came back when I picked up the pace a bit. Anyway, the race started and I tried to find a group to run with. I did find one, but after 2km, just over 7, I knew this was going a bit too fast. However, when I looked back, the next group was way back and I decided to stay with "my" group. Luckily, the pace became bit more moderate and we reached 10K around 37:30. The overpass just before QEW reminded me though what it felt up the hills yesterday - no kick up the hill. That worried me a bit. After a couple of kilometers along Lake Ontario, I had to, or I decided to, let my two running mates go (they finished btw at 1.51 and 1.54) and I started to struggle. When I start to struggle in a road race, I automatically start to calculate what time I may finish in if...I keep 3.50 for another 5km and then 4 min/km for 3km, but then a good finish at 3.45 or if I do 4 min/km for a few km and then hit the wall totally and walk up Valley Inn Rd...etc. That is a good strategy, because it takes my mind off how my legs feel. Somewhere along North Shore, TVP waited for me with his bike, and I really appreciated having him keeping my company. The hills were brutal and I lost time running up hill, a lot compared with last year, but in between I managed to hold it up. And in the end, I'm really happy with my finish time 1.56.20. It certainly didn't feel like a PB race. I'm a bit worried about what my knee will be like tomorrow. Last year, I ran home from downtown, even though it hurt a little bit. This year, I am so happy I brough a bus ticket with me. But hopefully will some rest and easy training make my legs awesome for next weekend.
