Skiing race 2:05:00 [4]
First ski race since 2004 or 2005. Can't remember. In any case, I have fond memories of Muskokaloppet back in 2003. A very cool course - big parts were single track through some awesome woods with some challenging up and down hills. The course has, however, changed since then. Much flatter and double track.
The weather was sunny and temp around -14C. No wax problems. Skis were ok, not any phenomenal glide, but like most others. The very dry snow made conditions slow. I felt great in the beginning. A group of 7-8 skiers took off from start with former national team member Dan Roycroft in the lead. I was in the next group with four others. First half was just flat. Double poling isn't my thing, but I was just following along and happily accepted to lead the group at times. After 9 km or so, it is all uphill for a few km. I like that much more and I pulled away a little bit from the other three, but then I got some pole problems so I had to use some downhills to fix that so the other caught me again. We did the first loop in an hour and change I think. But, although I felt fine the first half, that feeling disappeared qucikly. All by a sudden(!), my arms got very tired, and I had to work hard to keep up with the other three, and after 22.5 I had to let them go. I managed to see them for a few more km, but after the last uphill, the tank was completely empty and it was just about finishing. Which I did.
I still enjoyed the race, but lesson learned is that I'm not strong enough, yet, to do a tough 2h run on the Saturday, and a tough ski race the day after. With an easier run on Saturday, I'm confident I could have finished the loppet in good form. Next time.
