Running 1:45:00 [3]
AM: 3:30 am run with Jack through Glen Haffey. Nice trails for most part and very different from up north. Ankle didn't feel as good during the run as it did at the end of yesterday's. That could be because of all the up and down hill. Uphill running was fine but I was more or less one legged going down the hill. I tried to compensate by push it a bit going uphill and on the flat (but I am not sure Jack noticed anything...). The last 30 min was road and we had to call base camp to let them know that we would be early. When we arrived to the CP, no one was there, but seconds later, Kate using all horse powers in Mark's Audi came flying down with Gary.
Running 1:25:00 [3]
Could barely walk when I woke up this morning, but after have walked around the block, the foot felt better and I gave Simon the thumbs up. I thought with some painkillers and physio, I would be able to run later in the day. I switched legs though, insted of 19 km from the top of Blue Moutain to Pretty River PP, I took Kate's leg from Pretty PP to Devil's Glen. Kate had also hurt, more badly, her foot.
From Pretty River, it was basically uphill for the first 5 km. Definitely a serious climb. The first part was on road which was good for my foot. I ran from Singhamton caves to Devil's Glen a few weeks ago so I knew the trail and what to expect. The trail is really nice and there are some great woods. Some rocky sections forced me to slow down, but I tried to run fast. My right leg had to work really hard, taking all the impact on the downhills.
Distance 15.2 km
My time 1.24
Pace 5:30 min/km

AM: leg 8 of the Blaze. 25 km on the Bruce Peninsula finishing at the statue in Wiarton. I didn't know how my body would react so I was a bit nervous before starting the run, but fortunately, it felt pretty good. Jeff and Gary came in 4.17 so I waited until 4.30 before I started. Such a great feeling running in the dark on your own just before dusk. I had the map in my hand and I felt like I was running Tiomila or Jukola. The first few kilometers were relatively easy - nice footing, and I could keep 5 min/km no problem. Generally, I felt smooth the entire leg. After 30 minutes or so, I came to the edge of the escarpment and that meant more rocks and more twists and turns for about an hour. The last 45 minutes were a mix of road, rock, and trail. Great leg. Really enjoyed it.
The leg was officially 25.3 km.
My time was 2.08.
Pace 5:03 min/km

PM: Evening leg (15) around Bangor Marsh. The first few kilometers were a mix of really gnarly and rugged trail running (including some cave running), nice trails and some road running. Just like the morning leg, things changed. There was some true wilderness out there although I doubt I at any time was more than a couple of kilometers away from a road. Just like earlier today, I felt smooth, a bit tired going up the hills perhaps, but I enjoyed and I had a sub 6 min/km, maybe 5:30, leg coming up. Unfortunately, a hole on the trail just when I was making my way through Bangor Marsh ruined the rest of the leg. Again I twisted my left foot badly. I had to stop and walked for while, but could then limp away again. The discovery peope were waiting for me at a road so I had to pull my style together again which was a bit pain ful. Luckily I had some road running at the end, but the darkness came and the last couple of kilometers on small trails (and I only brought my small spare light because I though I would be done before dark) were very slow and it hurt.
Leg was 23.2 km
My time 2.25
Pace 6:15 min/km
