Running 3:03:23 [4] 42.43 km (4:19 / km) +72m 4:17 / km
So I finally made my marathon debut! Goal was to qualify for Boston so a check for that one!
I was a bit concerned at the starting line since I had felt pretty tired and sluggish in general during the week but the first couple of kilometers felt fine so body responded well and that was relief. I actually felt really good for the first half; the kilometers came and went, the course was nice and the scenery was somewhat changing (can't have too high expectations on a road race). Ran the half marathon in 1:27:30 and I was confident that already this race could actually be a sub-3 event. I didn't think I would be able to keep same pace but I still thought that a 1:30-1:31 pace for the second half could be done.
After the 30K mark, pace dropped a fair bit. Partly because of the strong wind, but the quads were starting to really hurt. I did find another guy to run with and we joined forces through the wind. I didn't particular like this stretch of the course. We were running on the Waterfront Trail but it was a lot of turns, bikers, other runners and walkers and in my state, everything "extra" cost a lot. I was hoping that the wind in the back the last 5-6 km would make everything easier, but I was pretty much done - quads and hip flexor had stopped responding. I realized that sub-3 was gone, and that was ok, Boston was the goal.
No doubt do I need to do my homework a bit better next time. I hardly ran at all from December through to February and probably didn't have enough mileage in my legs to really deal with the monotonous character of a marathon.
