Note
(injured) (rest day)

And the weather was crappy too so all in all a good day to sleep in and be late for work!

Wednesday Sep 29, 2010 #

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Loving this fine weather.
6 AM

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 45:00 [5]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Exhausting class but I'm getting a bit sick of sprints. The hills were fun though (I had epic resistance for the last track).

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Flew past some wimpy rider up the hill behind the gym then they thought they'd have the nerve to try and race me once we were on the flat...they didn't win.

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 45:00 [4]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Okay so I felt fine and I had energy and stuff but I was just a bit sick of cycling this morning and feeling a bit glum! Not that tough a class really either.

Road Bike 2:05:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Out to Kumeu and back. Well that was substantially faster than last time!! But then again, I was actually trying on the way there (I cruised part of the way back behind some cyclists slightly slower than me). Awesome morning and feeling great. Why didn't my legs feel like this yesterday?!

MTB (mtb) 2:20:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

At the bike park with Owen. Not feeling too flash today or terribly confident but I survived and felt a bit better nearer the end. Managed a couple of good falls...one in particular that has added to my already impressive collection of bruises. But I really should stop having so many late nights (juxtaposed against so many early mornings to make it even worse!).

Friday Sep 24, 2010 #

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Heaps of people hanging around on K'Rd on my way there...Thursday must be a big night in town. Cycling back in heavier traffic than normal but survived.
6 AM

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 45:00 [4]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

It was SO hot...not helped by being a full class! I sat down the whole time just to make sure I was protecting my foot and it felt fine most of the time except in the sprinting when the shoe pressed on it a bit every time I pulled my foot up. Tried not to take it too hard (which is difficult when you're sitting next to Rick) just in case but it was still a tough class.

Note
(injured)

Went to the physio this afternoon and had an xray on my foot. I would be rich for the number of times (which is admittedly only twice now) they've bet a million bucks that it will be a stress fracture and show up on the xray. Okay, official results of the xray still to come but after a quick look apparently nothing is showing up. Go back on Monday. Why is it that I hate the bike when that's all I'm allowed to do?!
6 AM

Road Bike 1:05:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Out to the cycleway and along to the inlet just before Lincoln Road and then back again along a slightly different route. Epic headwind heading west across the causeway...it was like biking up a steep hill! Good workout. I found as long as I mostly pressed with the inside of my left foot it was fine.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Bummed I couldn't go to the night orienteering. We watched cheesy TV all night instead with the heater turned up as high as it would go! I swear if this wind keeps up we're going to loose the roof off our house (and the shed...some of the roof there has already gone!).

6 AM

Run 47:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

From home with a similar route to Saturday only trying to avoid too much of the mud at Meola Reserve. Got as far as Coxs Bay before I had to stop. Started off just feeling quite stiff all over but at some point my left foot began to hurt a bit. I kept running but then it started hurting heaps so I stopped. Not good.

Walk 23:00 [1]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Hobbling back from Coxs Bay. I'm counting it 'cause it was one hell of an effort! Didn't help that it was cold and raining!

Monday Sep 20, 2010 #

Road Bike 30:00 [2]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Cruising and (mostly) getting all the good traffic lights.
6 AM

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 45:00 [5]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Jeepers I felt unfit today! Was a tough class for a start then everyone around me seemed to be spinning at a thousand miles per hour while I could only manage snail pace and then my stupid bruises from yesterday's crash off my mtb were hurting. Tragic!
6 PM

Climbing (indoor - TR) 2:00:00 [3]
shoes: Red Chili Spirit Lady

At Extreme Edge with Chris. We rocked! But I was absolutely dead by the end.

Sunday Sep 19, 2010 #

9 AM

MTB (mtb) 2:05:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

At the bike park with the girls. It was tough work but I am definitely riding better and doing things I didn't used to be able to do. Still no closer to catching them though! Went on a few trails I hadn't done and some I used to struggle on but didn't find too bad. But got way too tired near the end so let them do the cool homeward track while I just cruised down the quick route.

Run 55:27 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

From home down through Western Springs and around the lake (some parts were taped off due to trees falling over but I'm a rebel and jumped the tape) then around the zoo, through Jagger's Bush, round Meola Reserve (or whatever it's called), back up through Jagger's Bush to West End Road where the wind first tried to blow me backwards and then almost tripped me up, then through Cox Bay Reserve and back up to home. Felt really good and would have liked to have gone further. I like my new area. Oh, and my new shoes are now muddy which is awesome because they no longer have that shiny new look about them that I hate (my flatmate made me wash them...I did a budget job so they still look a bit dirty).

Friday Sep 17, 2010 #

10 AM

Run 2:24:00 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

Over at the Waitakeres. The same route as last time (Upper Kauri, Sisam, Chateau Mosquito, RGB, Ridgeline, Fenceline, Auckland City). Definitely not fast but I didn't feel too bad. Tracks were even muddier and slippery than last time and I did manage a nice fall in the mud at one point! At least mud is soft. Ended up walking most of RGB when I think about it but was still working hard. I really wanted to come down (well, down and up) Robinson Ridge Track instead of Fenceline but the weather had started to turn nasty. Good decision because the moment I got back to the car it poured with rain.

Thursday Sep 16, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Being good and taking another rest day. Body is feeling really good but I was super super tired. Too many late nights and early mornings and my usual 6 hours of sleep or whatever it is wasn't leaving me feeling as awake as normal. Guess I needed more sleep to recover from the weekend.

Wednesday Sep 15, 2010 #

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Made it to the gym just before the rain apparently then when I left it looked nice and fine. Shouldn't have jinxed it by joking with Roger that it would probably rain about 5 minutes down the road...'cause it did.
6 AM

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 45:00 [5]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Really good, tough class. My legs were feeling amazing (?!) so went hard out. It was hot. I also made some small changes on my usual setup and I think they worked real well so I should remember that for next time.

Tuesday Sep 14, 2010 #

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Got all the green lights on the way there and mostly on the way back too which was good 'cause it rained. Legs feeling pretty good actually...on the bike at least.
6 AM

Gym (arm weights and core) 35:00 [3]

(rest day)

I am tired and 5:40am plane flights are not fun.

Sunday Sep 12, 2010 #

10 AM

Walk 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

Wandering through Naesby forest and trying not to get lost. Legs, once up and moving, weren't feeling too bad at all...except on steep downhills. I was feeling pretty faint at the end though and in desperate need of food. Thank god for peanut butter sandwiches!

Orienteering race (Ophir EPIC Rogaine) 11:55:00 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Flyroc 310

12-hour rogaine with Michael.

Michael had planned the route with the idea of getting as many controls on the flattish section first before heading out to the far end of the map so we didn't have to go looking for them in the dark which seemed like a good idea since we could clock up heaps of points quite quickly. But it was a bit disconcerting doing all these little loops and ending up only about 2.5km from the hash house after 4 hours!

After the first control (where everyone seemed to be running off all over the place like headless chickens) we barely saw any other teams out there which was really quite weird.

At about 5 hours I was not feeling too good which lasted a good 45 minutes. We got to the water stop not long after at about the halfway point I think and I felt mildly panicked when I looked at the route we had planned to get back (okay, I'd been feeling mildy panicked about it the whole time but feeling quite determined). Once at #5 we were going to be at the furthest point with only one real route back and we still had at least 5km to cover to get to that point and then the whole of the range to go along to get back. At least it wasn't too steep up to the summit from that side though.

My feet and my left knee were in pain not long after it got dark so the last 2 hours were a world of pain! I had resorted to the jog/shuffle to keep up with Michael's ridiculously large steps but since so much of that last section was down hill it was not too much fun. Thankfully we decided to cut out a few controls on the way down the ridge 'cause we'd botched the navigation to #36 (I stupidly pointed at the wrong hill and Michael stupidly agreed I was right) so darkness had arrived and we still had a little way to go. I gave up any sense of navigating about then and just tried to hang on!

I don't think I hydrated so well in the first couple of hours which I think was part of the reason for feeling so crap at the 5 hour mark but after that I think I got my food and drink sussed. Just don't try and eat going up a hill 'cause you just run out of breath way too quickly.

It was awesome scenery, the weather was great and I was surprised at how much energy I had (but I'm still freaked out about this whole 24 hour business). Just wish my feet and knee hadn't hurt so much.

Oh, and we won the mixed grade. Yay!

Run 37:01 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Jeepers this felt hard! Felt so slow and unfit the whole way but when I mapped it afterwards I was actually going pretty fast. This should have been apparent after I cruised past a couple of other runners who weren't exactly going slow. I think my head needs re-adjusting sometimes. Anyway, just ran from home looping down to the boardwalk at Bayfield Park then up to the top of Herne Bay and back again via the park. Looking forward to doing a long run round my area 'cause there are heaps of parks and cool places to explore.

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Beautiful morning and feeling good.
6 AM

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 45:00 [5]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Tough class. It was so ridiculously hot and I was feeling quite determined to go hard out. Good big hills which I made the most of. I probably should have sat down for more of the hill work though...

Tuesday Sep 7, 2010 #

6 AM

Run (Ho chi Minh Trail) 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 285

From the gym up to the grandstand then a couple of loops (alternate directions) of the Ho chi Minh Trail at 70% then most of the way round another loop to get back to the gym. Slow but feeling quite good and really quite enjoying the rain.

Monday Sep 6, 2010 #

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Didn't even need the arm warmers on the way home...it must be warming up at last (or is that just a bit optimistic?).
6 AM

Gym (Ab Stretch Class) 1:00:00 [2]

Rick had suggested I do the ab stretch class this week. It was kind of a version of pilates apparently but I wouldn't know. Actually, it was quite good but tough. Felt quite nicely stretched afterwards but also like I'd definitely been doing stuff.

10 AM

Orienteering race (OY7 - Waiuku Forest) 1:14:07 [4] 7.2 km (10:18 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 285

Not too bad. Not running very fast but navigated reasonably okay once I got my head into gear. Stuffed up the first control by vearing too far to the left and everything looked the same in the cutty grass. The long legs went okay but I pussy-footed my way through from 8-9 and lost a bit of time there. Also had a bit of trouble with #16 as I was looking at the northern hills instead. But mostly it was just slow going through the cutty grass jungle and I even managed to draw blood where a strand of the stuff sliced through my wrist. Good times.

2 PM

Run warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Ooo, I ran up the hill from the beach house for the first time ever and it wasn't even that hard! Then we ran down to the road to the lagoon for random drills Michael made up.

Run (drills) 20:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Michael attempted to show me Michael Adam's running drills although his version was passed down to him from Carsten so it's probably completely different (reminds me of a sort of Chinese Whispers). We looked like idiots. Enough said.
3 PM

Walk 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Back from the lagoon over the hills of the West Coast trail, down the side of the predator fence and then back over the hill to the beach house. The grass is really starting to get long...Michael reckoned it was good practice for walking in snow. I am kind of hoping I don't have to put it to good use!

Friday Sep 3, 2010 #

11 AM

Road Bike 3:00:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

With Michael out to Kumeu and back. I was all anxious about it since I've never ridden that far on the road bike and there is that hill with the passing lane that I'd built up in my mind to be a big hill. It wasn't hard at all and the rest of the ride was a nice cruise. We had lunch in Kumeu (in the bus shelter since the weather was packing in) then rode home again and it tried to rain on us. Legs felt tired and unhappy to start with but by the end they were ready for more!

Wednesday Sep 1, 2010 #

6 AM

Run warm up/down 27:30 [2]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 285

10:30 warmup from the gym through the domain, 17 min warmdown back to the gym via the tracks.

Run intervals (Domain Off-road Loops) 36:00 [4]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 285

3 sets with 3 minute recoveries. First and last at 70% (well, it was supposed to be anyway), middle loop at 'race pace' (whatever that is). My legs were not too happy about all this and the grass was super muddy in places.

Times were: 10:20, 9:39, 10:21. Probably about right although I reckon the second one could have been faster except I kept sliding around on the mud and I was worried about surviving till the end so I didn't go as hard as I reckon I could have. Still felt buggered afterwards though.
