Rogaine race (Heights of Winter) 9:00:00 [2]
(sick) shoes: Mizuno Wave Cabrakan 3

Came down with the stomach bug that's been floating around Jenni and Carsten's on Friday night but somehow thought I'd be okay to survive a 12 hour rogaine. Felt pretty awful right from the start but it got really bad about 5 hours in so we plotted a route to get me back to the hash house but still get controls. Pretty much couldn't eat anything for the entire race. Also got a wicked electric shock across my back at one point which just was just delightful. Emily and Amber continued on in the dark once they'd dropped me off. Sucked because this was my kind of course (fast-moving terrain, fairly easy navigation). But I did get a nice 3 hours toasting myself around the bonfire with the organisers and St John guys whilst waiting for everyone to finish.

Wednesday night run up Bowenvale (Greig led us up a cool little track I didn't know about but then proceeded to lead straight up through the tussock which wasn't quite so cool) to Huntsbury then round and down through Vic Park. Good fun. I am so relieved people are turning up! Feeling a bit better running than Saturday but my legs are a little exhausted from yesterday's efforts up the hills!

MTB 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

From Jenni and Carsten's up Rapaki and the usual now the top tracks are all open again. Passed a fairly fast runner at the bottom of the last climb up Rapaki and we commented that he'd probably be passing me shortly but I bet him to the top (we both fought pretty hard for the win) and he gave me a round of applause. At the bottom of Dyers I just tootled up to the library to meet Michael before riding home because I'm too scared of Jenni to go back by myself (not counted in time obviously since I was practicing my 'ridiculously slow, almost stationary without falling off' riding skills).

Note
(rest day)

Dropped my road bike off for some serious work (at R&R where the mechanic actually treats me like I know stuff about bikes) then lots of walking around and trying to find the right buses.

MTB race (McLeans Island MTBO) 1:06:35 [4] 18.9 km (3:31 / km)
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Exhausting work bumping around all the gravel roads. Would have been way more fun if the fast route choices used some single track. Went okay apart from losing 3 minutes on the first control going completely the wrong direction! Then lost somewhere between 30 and 60 seconds going the wrong way along a road to #5 before realising it turned into an out of bounds road.

Run 1:59:52 [3] 15.2 km (7:53 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

The girls decided to go riding instead of running today and I wanted to go running so ended up going with Chris...a bad day for having dead legs and feeling exhausted! Ran from Viv's and met up at Fava then ran up Mt Vernon Valley track and along the mtb trail then up to the top of Sugar Loaf. Down to the back track then along the top tracks back to the top of Mt Vernon. At this stage Chris got a text to say that the others were about half an hour away so he decided we needed a detour up to the top of Witch Hill which was basically a rock scramble. Then back down the valley track to the cafe. We were so thirsty the water in the stream began to almost seem appealing!

Run warm up/down 20:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

To Hansen Park and back again afterwards.

Run intervals (Mongetti) 20:00 [4]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Thought I'd do some intervals (clearly avoiding doing my bootcamp stuff!). Anyway, this was actually quite an eventful run! So I ran along the river next to Hansen Park then crossed over the bridge and ran back on the other side doing a few loops. But near the end I crossed a bridge over a channel into the river and I heard someone calling out. I stopped and turned around but didn't see anyone so was about to start running again when they yelled at me again. Finally I saw there was this lady standing in the channel. Turns out she'd jumped in (she said she fell in but I don't think that's right) to rescue a dog but couldn't get back out. Her friend had gone to find someone with a ladder so I hung around to see if there was anything I could do. She said it got too deep to continue down the channel to the river and climb out at the bank and that she was slowly sinking into the mud. Finally some old guy in his slippers appeared carrying a ladder and we got her out. Felt weird finishing off the intervals after that interruption!

MTB 1:32:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Up Rapaki then down again to the bottom gate then up again. Along the road a bit then down Huntsbury. Got stuck behind a bus near the last sharp corner and had to sit behind them for ages 'cause it wasn't safe to pass. Then some car tried to drive into me on the flat where all the roadworks are. Slammed on the brakes (nicely skidding in some grit) and luckily so did the car behind me too otherwise it might have been a rather unpleasant story. Anyway, felt pretty good on the climbs and much more positive than yesterday. I never know how hard to push until I'm near the top because it's such a long climb.

Note

I hit my head again. It's really sore :-(

Run 1:26:00 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Flyroc 310

Wednesday night run in the misty rain with Chris leading the way. Mostly on definitely closed tracks which was a bit scary and I felt very useless and slow on all the slippery rock and that stuff (I was amused by the sign halfway along one of them that said Extreme Danger, do not proceed - with arrows pointing in both directions and no other track around that you could be on. Found myself all alone for various bits which was rather terrifying especially when my breath was fogging up my light and I couldn't see much at all. Hit a big low by the time I got home (well, back to Viv's...I wish I could go home).

Rowing Machine 15:00 [4]

Man, haven't done this in a while! We started off with a warmup for about 6 minutes then tackled the 2000 metre challenge. I got 8:59 which seemed pretty good considering how long it's been. Michael finished ages before me and it made me jealous 'cause I wanted the torture to be over! Can't wait to do it again!

Gym - Cardio (Various) 25:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

I like the mountain climber type one but I would rather be outside climbing the hills instead but today was not that day.

Gym (weights) 30:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Even did some pullups (well, pull partway ups).

MTB 55:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Nice little ride from Viv's up Rapaki, down again then back to the house via a very roundabout route. Pushed hard up the hill which was fun. Felt a bit ill mostly because I had basically inhaled lunch at 3:30 when I got home then left as soon as possible. Tomorrow I will remember to take lunch.

Sunday Jun 17, 2012 #

Run 1:27:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Emily and I ran from her place over to Rapaki where we met Clare and Amber then continued up the hill to the top of Mt Vernon (while Clare walked around the bottom) then down Farm Track and back to Emily's via the coffee shop. Felt okay running but we were going nice and slow. It was freezing despite wearing a long thermal and my polar fleece jumper, even running up. The Banks Peninsula across the harbour looked like it was covered in snow and we found icy, snowy patches on the top of Mt Vernon.
Feeling a bit in pain across my back and tummy a bit later but I think I'm on the homeward straight now.
6 PM

Note

Yes yes, there was no mtb ride this week. Fail. But by the weekend almost all the tracks were closed and going for a run with my Spring Challenge team seemed like a better idea than just riding up Rapaki and back down. To make up for it I'll ride twice this coming week although looking at the weather I think it will be a simple up and down. Sigh.

Walk 40:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Yay! I made it out for a walk with Michael! I had high hopes for today. I was going to feel good and I was going to go for a run. But no, instead Michael had to make an emergency dash to the dairy to get me some pain killers instead. And when I made it out of bed, struggled round the house trying to pack up everything whilst balancing a hot water bottle on my stomach was rather frustrating. Anyway, we did get out for a walk in the evening and attempted to see where the bottom of the track I investigated earlier in the week might come out. Conclusion...it's too hard to tell, especially in the dark with a tiny headtorch!

Friday Jun 15, 2012 #

Note

Michael had suggested we go to the gym or something after work but yeah, that wasn't going to happen. I considered doing yoga or something but that was going to be too painful too. This is quite possibly the worst it's ever been but at least it explains the rest of the week. Sometimes being a girl is like some kind of medieval torture.

Thursday Jun 14, 2012 #

Note

Still feeling awful plus I had to bake up a storm for my last day.

Wednesday Jun 13, 2012 #

6 PM

Run 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Wednesday night run from Tane's up Farm Track then down Huntsbury. Legs felt like lead and I felt weird. Then when we started going downhill it felt like my stomach was being stabbed every step so eventually slowed to a walk and let the others go on ahead...but then Riki and Georgia came back up to me and we walked down the steep part together and then jogged the rest of the way back. Felt awful.

Note
(rest day)

Feeling a bit average and tired.

Run 52:43 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Home from work via the hilly route. Feeling a bit crap and slow. Vanessa is always sick and I think it's continuously putting me on the verge of being sick too. Thank goodness there is only FOUR more days to go (can you tell I'm excited?)!!

Orienteering race (Hagley Park Maze) 36:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Not sure of actual time. Decided the maze course looked the most fun out of all the options and it turned out to be rather entertaining. Still snow (and lovely slippery ice) around just for added excitement and chill factor. Pretty easy but the maze bit was still tricky and there were some bits that fooled me a bit.
4 PM

Walk 35:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

It was too beautiful an afternoon (although freezing) to waste so I walked up to the top of our street then I remembered the mysterious track that had appeared the other day just off Longhurst so continued to check it out. It doesn't go all that far yet but perhaps they are building a new track all the way down the hill which would be awesome. I will have to keep checking in on it.

MTB 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Took Jenna from work out for a ride round Bottle Lake. Or at least that was the plan. It was still ridiculously snowy and icy and not very fun, especially for poor Jenna who'd never been mtbing before! So we mostly stuck to the 4wd tracks which were still icy and snowy but not as bad.
4 PM

Run 37:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

With Michael up the Huntsbury Spur track to the road then up to Major Aiken to go down again. Stopped by Jenni and Carsten on the way home. Nice and cruisey but with a decent hill. Just what was required.

Strength and Conditioning 5:00 [3]

Strength and Conditioning 45:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

Fun times in the lounge. Can the ice just go away now please?

Thursday Jun 7, 2012 #

Note

Walked home from work trying to avoid the ice...which was basically impossible. Stopped at the supermarket halfway to get so weightlifting material for the rest of the walk home. I think it took about an hour and a half. Maybe longer? Who knows.

Not really training but not really resting either. Just life.

Wednesday Jun 6, 2012 #

Note

So yeah, it's snowing. I didn't really expect that. Was only raining when I left for work this morning so pulled out my old mountain bike (just in case) and all my wet weather gear and rode to work. On the way the rain started to turn more, well, like ice falling out of the sky, then snow and by the time I got close to work all the roads were covered in it. Was only there an hour when they decided to shut the office. Fortunately the new girl (my replacement) is very kind and offered me and my bike a lift home.
6 PM

Run 1:32:23 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Flyroc 310

Wednesday night run in the snow! From the York St flat up Rapaki then down Farm Track. Quite slippery down the bottom of Farm Track and I was a bit wimpy. Didn't even need lights on the hill because it was so bright. It was amazing! So beautiful!

Tuesday Jun 5, 2012 #

MTB 1:16:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Just the usual. It was drizzling a bit up the top and I misjudged a rock and came off which had me a bit shaken for the rest of the ride. Totally poured down once I got to the road which made for a rather awful descent. Glad I got out before most of the rain though. Not convinced it's going to snow but I could be wrong.

Monday Jun 4, 2012 #

10 AM

Run 1:04:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Up Mt John through the bush and then down the long way round the lakefront. Michael is far too speedy for someone who hardly ever runs. It's not fair! There was a very heavy frost in the morning and it never really warmed up all day.

Sunday Jun 3, 2012 #

MTB 4:00:00 [3] +1000m
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Along the West Manuherikia Track and up to Omarama Saddle (an hour of solid climbing, about 600 metres). At the saddle we decided to head up along Saddle Ridge Track which saw us mostly pushing our bikes up another 400 metres of climb (more than an hour I think although it didn't feel like it). At the top it didn't seem to get any better and was getting ridiculously cold. Then we encountered snow and there was definitely more snow on the track ahead. Michael suggested we should probably turn back in case we didn't make it out in the daylight and I had a complete and utter panic attack. It was not good. But somehow I managed to ride almost all of the way down the super steep, super rocky stuff to the saddle and then it was just an incredibly cold and painful descent back to the car. Took me a long time to defrost after that. Next time I reckon we need to do it in the summer and I'd rather do the entire circuit instead of the ridiculous push up to the tops (but I think Michael is quite taken with the idea of being up there).

MTB 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Up the ski field road then along the Richmond Trail for a little bit which was spectacular. So eerily quiet and the views were amazing, especially in the fading light. I wasn't super impressed when Michael said we had to turn back but we made it down just in time before darkness descended. Will have to come back to do the whole loop.
