3 PM

Walk 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Cabrakan 3

Up our street to Vic Park then down into Bowenvale and home. Foot seems mostly pretty good. Running next week...if I can get off my bike for long enough :-P

MTB 1:25:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Up Farm Track, along the traverse and down through Vic Park and Bowenvale and then home to make tofurkey. Oh man, one hell of an epic head wind riding up which made it even more exhausting than normal. Had to stop every now and then to die. Then getting blown around like crazy up on the traverse. Met Conal out there also battling the wind and we had a laugh at ourselves.

Rogaine race (R&R Sport Wicked Rogaine) 1:58:00 [4]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Event 3: Mt Pleasant
With Michael again. Yay! Super windy up at the start. We were out in front for the first few controls until stupid #72 which was in the wrong place. In a way I was quite glad to get a couple of teams ahead of us. Sucks having them all just sort of follow you. Got to #41 with just over 40 minutes to go for the road/parks section so I budgeted 15 minutes down and 25 up which ended up working out perfectly despite both of us doubting we were going to make it at various times. Did make for a slightly stressful climb at the end though! Bad hayfever tonight.

Walk 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 5

With Michael along the river to Stephanie's house to return her phone then up Huntsbury spur a bit and back home.

(rest day)

A bit stressed!

Yeah, I know. It was going to be an easy/rest day today but the weather was so fantastic and my bike was calling me plus the coming holiday is going to be way tougher. Rode up Farm Track (aced most of the rutty tricky stuff at the bottom too which was exciting...I should ride up this way more often but it is grueling work) then the 2nd half of Mt Vernon and along the traverse. Along Thompsons and up the road to the nun where I encountered a girl who was struggling so I gave her some encouragement (I know the feeling...wasn't all that long ago I sat at the bottom of this track crying because it was far too hard and scary) then back up the road to hoon down Kennedy's and the crocodile. The push along the road at the end was tough into the wind.
2 PM

Note

I'll be a bike mechanic before you know it! Spent the afternoon removing the cassette from my old rims and putting them on the new one which was pretty cool. It's pretty interesting how the cassette is put together. Also endless tyre changing and a bit of brake adjusting. Plus yesterday I got to break a chain and put it back together. Now, what else can I learn?

MTB 2:25:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

With Michael up the crocodile and Kennedy's where I worked on the rocky section at the top. Then down the nun and then old Dyers which was awful. Managed to smash my shin with my pedal and it was a rutted, rocky, narrow, grassy mess. I think I'll avoid it at least until the grass has been cut. Shin still hurts :(

MTB 2:00:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Up the crocodile and Kennedy's, down the nun, along the road and then down through Vic Park and Bowenvale to home. Started out sunny then got grey and had a wicked headwind within 5 minutes of leaving the house then the sun came out again on the tops. Weird. Caught up with a bunch of girls near the bottom of Kennedy's and thrashed them to the top :-P

MTB 1:20:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

The usual hill ride with Michael in the horrible horrible wind. My leg muscles were all tired and exhausted from yesterday (well, yesterday they were all sore from the silly exercises the day before and I think that's still the case!). Oh yeah, I did ride a tiny new bit of track down near the bottom of the valley today that I normally avoid so that was exciting.

Wednesday Nov 21, 2012 #

8 AM

Walk 40:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Walked to the post box to, well, post a letter, and since it was so beautiful outside I kept going.
6 PM

Rogaine race (R&R Sport Wicked Rogaine) 1:44:00 [4]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Event 2: Halswell Quarry
Fun times running round the hills with Michael. Much easier than last year's event here. Yeah, we totally could have got them all but we thought it would be way more scrappy and horrid getting to the later controls. In the end we dropped #21 (the topmost control) and #11 (on the way down) so I guess that's only 30 points but we did have 16 minutes to spare!

Tuesday Nov 20, 2012 #

4 PM

Strength and Conditioning 30:00 [3]

Need to be more disciplined and do this twice a week! Man I'm weak and stiff.

Monday Nov 19, 2012 #

Note

My new rims have arrived. Yay! Unfortunately they have arrived at Michael's parents' house so we still have to make the trip to pick them up and then I have to play with the chain whip and get dirty but still, they have arrived.
As an aside, we have spent so much on my account with Wiggle over the last year that I am now a Platinum member. Oh yeah :-P
4 PM

MTB 1:25:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Up Rakapi and Mt Vernon then along the traverse and down through Vic Park and Bowenvale. Good times.

Orienteering race (Parimanui) 2:09:47 [3] 6.4 km (20:17 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

I tried so hard to win the Lanterne Rouge certificate I'd made for W21E, even managing a very impressive 20 minutes on the final control but it just wasn't to be. Unfortunately I still managed to beat Jana. Damn!
Totally went in the out of bounds area trying to get to #2 in the bush but when you haven't got a clue where you are, well, you have no idea that you're in it!

Saturday Nov 17, 2012 #

1 PM

Orienteering race (Tekapo) 46:56 [3] 4.3 km (10:55 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

Pretty easy course but I did manage to read a depression as a hill at #3 so despite seeing the control I continued to look for the non existent hill a couple of minutes and then did a brilliant 180 at #8. Luckily I realised after 2 or 3 minutes before tearing off down the track. Was very lazy in all the green forest and mostly sort of walked/ambled.
3 PM

MTB 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Nice little ride with Michael up Cowans Hill and along the single track in the forest we'd just orienteered in. Managed to sneak in between rain showers. In fact it even got quite warm.

Friday Nov 16, 2012 #

Note

Wandering round putting out controls and running the start. Exhausted.

Thursday Nov 15, 2012 #

4 PM

Run 52:11 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

A slightly shorter version of my usual Bowenvale valley loop. My foot started feeling a bit sore on the way home which wasn't so good.

Wednesday Nov 14, 2012 #

6 PM

Rogaine race (R&R Sport Wicked Rogaine) 1:59:30 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Event 1: Vic Park.
With Michael. Fairly good route. Managed to do our entire plan, missing out just 90 points (3 controls). Headed out anticlockwise which did mean the nice big climb up from the valley to finish but easy controls. First half felt a bit rough. Climbing with hands and feet up to #101. Rather steep! I think I have developed hayfever though which is, well, not so good. But Michael seems to be allergic to the grass which is even worse. He had swollen eyes and very red legs by the end.
But anyway, we bet Tim and Jana. Yeah :)

Monday Nov 12, 2012 #

5 PM

Run 31:38 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Around the river and up Colombo to meet Michael then back the same way with him.

Sunday Nov 11, 2012 #

10 AM

MTB 3:00:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

With Michael up Rapaki, along the traverse and Thompsons tracks, down the nun then down Kennedy's and the crocodile (the new track) and then suffered along the road home behind Michael who was just powering along. Felt absolutely shattered by the time we got home.

Saturday Nov 10, 2012 #

9 AM

MTB 3:56:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

With Michael up the cool new track that drops you off partway up the Crocodile then up Kennedy's in the ridiculous heat. Poor Michael had forgotten his drink bottle (even though I had kindly filled it up for him and tried to give it to him several times before we left) so it became poor Katie having to share her 1 bottle. Then we went flying down the nun (see what I did there?) and then cruised down the cool single track on Worsleys. Stopped by home to have some toast and then I went out by myself (whilst Michael lay on the couch recuperating for the boys afternoon road ride) for the Rapaki, traverse, Vic Park, Bowenvale loop. Super speedy but boy was the hill tough going. Need to get in some more longer rides before the summer adventures begin.

Friday Nov 9, 2012 #

12 PM

Road Bike 1:34:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Up Hackthorne, Vic Park and Dyers to SOK then along the tops to the Ahuriri Reserve sign, just a bit further along from the 'snail' then back along the road and down Dyers to home. Was keen to do the loop down Gebbes to Governer's Bay but I really really need new rims...the brakes are definitely feeling dodgy. Pretty nervous coming down Dyers but they held out.

Thursday Nov 8, 2012 #

3 PM

Walk 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Cabrakan 3

In the valley. Feeling tired and ill from too much delicious souvlaki.

Wednesday Nov 7, 2012 #

4 PM

Run 1:45:04 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Up through Vic Park and over onto the Harry Ell then over the tops to Mt Vernon and back down into the valley via the zig zag and Bowenvale downhill and home again. Stomach pains and lots of crap gunk in my throat that just won't go away.

Tuesday Nov 6, 2012 #

6 PM

MTB 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Michael destroyed me on the way up Rapaki and I felt like I was falling apart by the top. Consequently a bit shaky round the traverse. Then it was time to race down through Vic Park but my favourite track was closed due to it being still wet so we had to mostly zip down the 4wd road. My breaking was much better today so didn't skid out of control like last time.

Monday Nov 5, 2012 #

4 PM

Run 55:01 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Cabrakan 3

The usual Bowenvale valley route although perhaps I cut some corners somewhere or something since it was over 5 minutes faster than when I last did this run in September. It was freezing...going from the 20s last week to single digit Southerlies again is just cruel.

Sunday Nov 4, 2012 #

11 AM

Orienteering race (OY - Acheron) 1:25:51 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

We had a lovely picnic by the lake in the glorious sunshine and ate delicious sandwiches and berry chocolate muffins.

Saturday Nov 3, 2012 #

4 PM

Run 1:19:28 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

We parked at the end of Worsleys Rd and then ran up the mtb track to the top. Michael then gave me another top to go over my polypro as it was freezing and he went back down the hill while I ran home over the tops. Met a whole lot of supermen, spidermen and batmen at the SOK. Either that or I've become delusional...which is quite possible I guess.

Friday Nov 2, 2012 #

6 PM

MTB 1:20:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Nice little evening ride in the windy wind with Michael up Rapaki (where we met Sylvia on her way down and Tane on his way to a certain interval death), along the traverse (where I lost Michael as his front wheel was beginning to spout goo) then down through Vic Park and Bowenvale to home. Almost lost control in the gravel before the last descent but managed to skid to a halt in time and restart. Don't want to end up in those nasty ruts that swallow you whole. Legs feeling shaky and awful today.
