Note
(rest day)

Rock hopping/climbing at the bay but it doesn't really qualify as training!

Kayaking 1:00:00 [2]

With Rob out amongst the mangroves. There was this cool mangrove-bashing bit that was good fun! Actually, the whole experience was heaps of fun and I can't wait to do it again! And I didn't suck (which quite surprised me!). Just got to remember to use the right technique (or something close to it) so you don't kill your arms.
3 PM

Run 1:15:00 [2]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 285

With Jess. Taking it easy (with a bit of walking up some of the hills) but checking out some of my favourite parts of the forest. It's funny how quickly time flies in there. Legs didn't feel too terrible all things considering.

Monday Mar 29, 2010 #

3 PM

MTB (mtb) 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Round Slater Rd with Marquita, Rob and Chris. Had quite a nice fall coming round some corner where it looks like I must have taken it too sharply. Landed in a nice patch of dead logs! So good to get out there again....it's like paradise! And my biking wasn't too bad either although I did get a bit wimpy after my fall.

Sunday Mar 28, 2010 #

Note

Spend the late afternoon riding round in circles at Debbie's local park giving her another biking lesson. This was surprisingly (or perhaps not) exhausting!
11 AM

Orienteering race (OY1 Huriwai) 1:24:48 [2] 4.78 km (17:44 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 285

Why did I do course 2? My legs weren't too happy about it but I actually managed to run some of it! Not too bad on the orienteering front but I felt pretty buggered. At a few points I thought about sitting under a rock or a tree and having a nap! Pretty amazing scenery...

Saturday Mar 27, 2010 #

Note

I also was walking to and from my car in Ponsonby before and after the event - 20 minutes there and 30 minutes back! Guess I was pretty tired coming home! Then we spent the evening at the beach but I collapsed in the sand whilst everyone else ran round after the dog 'cause my legs said they didn't want to move any more. Fair enough I guess.
11 AM

Run race (The Dual) 2:22:43 [4] 21.0 km (6:48 / km) +553m 6:00 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Flyroc 310

Awesome race...quite the contrast to last year. Started off up the hill fairly slow and paced myself against another girl who was going at a nice steady pace and I thought I might have found my pace maker but I dropped her not long before the second hill up Rangitoto. Passed several people coming down the rocky section (maybe a couple of people came tearing past me too) but was continuously reminding myself the really hard part was still to go. Made sure I was well fueled and hydrated by the time I hit the hard part and it went amazingly well...passed at least another 20 people on this section. I'm guessing the whole off road hellishly rocky section was taking it's toll on people by then. Then somehow just willed myself up the final hill (yep, passed a few more up here too!) and even managed a sprint back down and into the finish! Awesome! To be honest I was only really out to have fun since I've never been too good at actually pushing myself and was still kind of shaking of this cold thingy so I was pretty amazed I was 10th out of the women's grade (8th in open women). After about the 14km mark I didn't see any other women out there. Actually didn't see a heck of a lot of people at all. Just running my own race with myself!

Friday Mar 26, 2010 #

Note

Lots of walking around doing stuff and never managed the nap I'd planned. Didn't feel like a rest day.

Thursday Mar 25, 2010 #

MTB 15:00 [2]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

To and from the orienteering. Thought that since I lived so close I ought to ride instead of drive! But I need a road bike...mountain bikes are so slow on the road!
6 PM

Orienteering race (SS One Tree Hill) 58:21 [3] 7.2 km (8:06 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Damn, Allan bet me by 21 seconds which means we finish the series up 6 all (although Allan claims he bet me 'cause he had a 2 minute lead on me in overall time...clearly he's very competitive!). The course was good but my stomach was feeling a bit crappy and still have a stuffy nose. Oh, and I did stupid things like following people into the control...which of course wasn't there, which I knew, but was stupid anyway and thought I must have been wrong. Why do I keep doing this?!

Sam and Shan did well on course 3...yay for friends giving it a go!

6 AM

Run 32:34 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

Similar route to Monday morning but did the longer loop twice instead of once. Feeling like I was running like a retard and not going very fast but when I looked at the distance it was actually quite fast (for me that is). Funny! Legs feeling okay but near the end I felt pretty ill...felt like I wanted to throw up. Not from the running but something else. Felt the same last night. Weird. Still got a lingering cold too.

Gym (weights and core) 40:00 [3]

Just did arms and core stuff. Boring but I managed to increase the weights on most things. My right wrist is a bit swollen, wonky and sore again though.

Tuesday Mar 23, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Being a good girl and taking it easy (plus I had to take Keisha to daycare in the morning)! I think Sam has gone and made my lingering cold a bit worse again though!

Monday Mar 22, 2010 #

7 AM

Run 30:22 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

Round the roads in the Domain a few times. Was going to take it a bit easier but when there's someone running in front of you, well, you've got to try and catch and pass them! Legs feeling great. Head mostly feeling okay but nose is still a little stuffy.

Sunday Mar 21, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Thought about going for a walk round the park once I got home since the weather was so nice but ended up falling asleep after doing all the cleaning up of my gear.

Saturday Mar 20, 2010 #

8 AM

Adventure Racing race (ARC 8 hr) 9:00:00 [3]

From the very start, as we were jogging with our rafts out to the water I knew it was going to be a tough race 'cause I was already starting to feel queasy. So frustrating! But Owen's raft design was really good and we stayed afloat!

In the portage section through the bush pushing my bike up those super steep banks I felt really ill, like I was seriously overheating and going to pass out and not be able to go any further but there was nowhere to go but forward so I tried to just stay calm and once we were out of that section and whizzing down the hill with a nice cool breeze on my face I was feeling a bit more positive. After firing the rifle and getting 5 out of 5 I was on a high! Unfortunately we didn't do so well at the paintball section and both got hit. I have two lovely bruises to show for it and they hurt!

By the time we started the river bash I felt a little better...the cold water helped I think and also probably being on foot where I am more comfortable. I slipped a few times and landed on my sore wrist but at least I didn't end up as deep as Owen did!

The coasteering was cool. I used my mad rockclimbing skills once I stopped being a wimp and remembered I had them (although I still swam round one section of rock). Unfortunately once we started climbing up into the hills I started to feel quite nauseous again. At least we weren't too far from the finish by then.

Overall I think we did really well all things considering. It was so damn frustrating feeling sick 'cause my legs were keen and ready to move more but the rest of me was not. We also could be a lot quicker in transitions. The navigation was super easy and I guess I would have liked to have a bit more of a challenge there since that was probably our strong point! Oh, and more offroad biking. But yeah, it was heaps of fun and I think I'm hooked!

6 PM

Orienteering race (SS Mangere Mountain) 1:13:10 [2] 5.2 km (14:04 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Walking round course 2 with Sam. I was feeling pretty crap with my stupid cold and his knee was buggered so it was a slow wander but we both felt good to be outside. I did run up that little hill in the middle of the crater then up the side of the crater to the next control while Sam walked round the side and my legs felt good and aching for more but my head felt terrible. Frustrating.

Wednesday Mar 17, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Yay! And I had over 8 and a half hours sleep in a row which was a miracle. And I feel much more alive today although my throat is still a bit gummy and my nose is still a bit of a waterfall. And the sun is out. All is good!

Tuesday Mar 16, 2010 #

6 AM

Run 24:39 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

Short loop from the gym along to the church and down then up Bassett Road and back down Remuera Road to the gym. Taking it easy and the legs are feeling good. Noticed I have a bit of a stuffy nose and gummy throat...oh no!! At least I'm sleeping like a log lately...at last.

Gym (weights and core) 45:00 [3]

Monday Mar 15, 2010 #

6 AM

Run 50:52 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

From the gym down to somewhere near the bottom of Parnell then round to Victoria Ave and up to Remuera Road (where I was racing someone up the hill and bet them...yay!) then back down to the gym. Feeling a bit sluggish especially to start with but feeling much better by the end. Probably had a few too many hills but it's hard to find anywhere flat round here...

Gym (core and stretches) 20:00 [2]

Sunday Mar 14, 2010 #

10 AM

MTB (mtb) 3:00:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

At the bike park. Out to the far end and around then a smaller loop and a long route home. Met up with Cath and Dale near the beginning of Cookie the second time and we had a chat then biked together the rest of the way. Was awesome fun.

Saturday Mar 13, 2010 #

5 PM

Walk 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 3

With Mum around the old haunts. Very windy.

Friday Mar 12, 2010 #

5 AM

Run warm up/down 20:17 [2] 4.0 km (5:04 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

To the gym. Had an awesome sleep last night so was feeling pretty good but just cruised. Still, I thought I'd be a bit faster.
6 AM

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 45:00 [5]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Oooo, fancy! We finally have the new bikes...just in time for me to stop going to class for a while (I guess I should be thankful they arrived in time for me to try them out though)! Gotta watch the resistance 'cause a tiny nudge on the dial thingy can make it bloody hard and I have a habit of turning it up way too much too soon. Wasn't too tough a class but it felt tough as we all struggled navigating our way round the new bikes.
7 AM

Run warm up/down 19:43 [3] 4.0 km (4:56 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

Home again. Got completely drenched in the last half but was loving it. Yeah, I like running and would have loved to be out longer this morning but got stuff planned for today.

Thursday Mar 11, 2010 #

6 AM

Run warm up/down (treadmill) 10:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Was SO stiff this morning and this really helped...how can 10 minutes gentle run help so much? It's crazy!

Gym (weights and core) 1:10:00 [3]

Hmmm, tough work today. But I had a nice break in the middle showing Rick how to use a compass. Looks like I've made an orienteering fan out of him!

Wednesday Mar 10, 2010 #

6 AM

Run warm up/down (treadmill) 23:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

10 minutes warmup, 13 minutes warmdown.

Run intervals (treadmill) 20:00 [5]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

Started with 3 minutes and ended with 1 minute (with 1 to 1:30 minutes jog between). A variety in between but I've forgotten what they were. Upped the speed even more today hence the shorter times 'cause it killed me...but that was the point.

Gym (core and stretches) 25:00 [3]

Tuesday Mar 9, 2010 #

6 AM

Run warm up/down (treadmill) 10:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Cruising...

Gym (weights and core) 50:00 [3]

A shortened version of my programme before my dietitian appointment. A little too much gossiping going on (not included!) but a good session all the same.
6 PM

Orienteering race (SS Auckland Domain) 1:09:34 [3] 6.6 km (10:32 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

ARGH!!! Had a real shocker! Fell, slipped and crashed down several banks and steep slopes, managed a 180 and was just generally sluggish! I enjoyed the bits where I could stretch my legs but wasn't in the mood for bashing through the jungly bits. Oh well, good to get out.

Monday Mar 8, 2010 #

6 AM

Run hills 1:14:56 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

Same run as last Monday and met the same old dude at the top of Mt Hobson again and he recognised me. Didn't feel faster but clearly I was, probably aided by trying not to lose the guy running faster than me up the other side of Portland Rd and then running with some random guy through the Domain near the end. Died coming up the little hill at the end of the Domain but pulled out a good sprint back to the gym.
6 PM

Climbing (indoor - TR) 2:15:00 [3]
shoes: Red Chili Spirit Lady

With Chris and Haydn at Extreme Edge. Despite falling asleep at my desk a couple of times during the day I felt quite awake by the time I got to the wall. Got some really good climbs done. Right wrist is still sore but actually not as bad as it has been.

Sunday Mar 7, 2010 #

9 AM

MTB (mtb) 2:15:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

At the bike park. Out to the far end and round about. Fell off a few times in the sand with the biggest fall being in front of a whole group of guys standing around at the bottom...typical. Legs feeling a bit dead. Probably from next to no sleep all week and the damn sugar hangover from yesterday. Good day out though and wanted to stay longer but had to get back for Sam's football final.

Friday Mar 5, 2010 #

5 AM

Run warm up/down 19:44 [2] 4.0 km (4:56 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

To the gym. My legs and brain weren't quite on the same wavelength yet so I kept thinking I was going to trip over! Saw 2 runners ahead of me as I came up the rise so decided to try and beat them to the next set of lights...it wasn't hard in the end.
6 AM

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 50:00 [5]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

SO intense! Combining heartrate and strength today. My legs were feeling like wobbly jelly by the end. I swear Lincoln's making the classes longer and harder each week 'cause it may have even been longer than 50 minutes by the time class finished judging by the time I left the gym.
7 AM

Run warm up/down 19:51 [2] 4.0 km (4:58 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

No time for a long run since I had to be home and ready for when Mum came. Legs feeling pretty exhausted after class and I thought I was going at snail pace but it turns out the time wasn't too bad but I got caught at all the lights and had to keep waiting for traffic which was frustrating. Interesting to know how fast I could do this commute if it wasn't so early in the morning or straight after class and I really tried.

Thursday Mar 4, 2010 #

6 AM

Run warm up/down (treadmill) 10:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Gym (weights and core) 1:15:00 [3]

Arms feeling a bit weak and legs feeling a bit stiff. 4 1/2 hours sleep is not really enough to keep one going! Stressed out of my brain though so needed to do something this morning.

Wednesday Mar 3, 2010 #

6 AM

Run warm up/down (treadmill) 23:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

10 minutes warmup, 13 minutes warm down. Feeling pretty good really.

Run intervals (treadmill) 20:00 [5]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

4 min, 3:30 min, 3 min, 3:30 min with 1:30-2 min jog inbetween. Upped the speed again from last week and surprised myself. Maybe I'll be ready to do them outside soon. Just not confident I can push myself enough without something (i.e. a moving conveyor belt) forcing me to but it would be way more pleasant outside.

Gym (core and stretches) 25:00 [3]

Tuesday Mar 2, 2010 #

6 AM

Orienteering race (SS Selfs Farm) 52:22 [3] 7.1 km (7:23 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Flyroc 310

So wasn't in the mood when I started and my legs and stomach were achey. Oh well. Felt a bit more into it after about control #4 until I started to keep getting zapped by the electric fences. I just took it pretty slow but still beat Allan and that's all that really matters!

Monday Mar 1, 2010 #

6 AM

Run hills 1:17:47 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5

From the gym running up Basset, Portland, Mt Hobson and Ayr Street then a cruise round the outer tracks in the Domain to finish up. Feeling surprisingly good for rather a lack of sleep so made the most of it since it was one of those morning where I was loving it the whole way. But why is it there is always an old guy (different guy each time) at the top of Mt Hobson wanting to chat to you? First question after hello is always what are you training for? Weird!
