6 AM

Run long 1:24:42 [3] 15.01 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Down through Pt Chev and round some random streets then cut through to the zoo. Round the lake in the dark which was a little creepy since there are no lights...to the lower Arch Hill track which was also super dark (wish it had been light enough to run the higher track 'cause that one is my favourite). Up and over through Grey Lynn Park to Coxs Bay then up and home via the top link tracks in Jaggers Bush. Had to run round the block and then a little up the street to make it to 15km (because 14.6 wasn't quite as cool a number!). Feeling okay...definitely felt better in the second half than the first but the second half was steeper so I guess that was good I felt better!

Note
(rest day)

SO tired. Some idiot texted me at 4am (my phone is my alarm clock hence why it was still on) and it woke me up and upset me and then I couldn't get back to sleep properly and my car was doing weird things so I was stressed. Sigh. But I did have to do lots of walking around doing errands for work and picking up my car.

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Need to start wearing gloves again.
6 AM

Run warm up/down 24:29 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Jog to the fields in the Domain (10:33) and then a slightly longer warmdown afterwards back to the gym via the lower road (13:56). Feeling pretty good really. I like mornings.

Run intervals 20:00 [4]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Trying something different...did the Moneghetti intervals and tried to do most of them up and over the hill in the middle of the fields. It was super dark though so I sucked when it came to running downhill because I felt like I was falling over. But it was quite cool and because they were short I wasn't so afraid of pushing hard.

Climbing (indoor - lead) 2:15:00 [4]
shoes: Five Ten Anasazi Verde

At Extreme Edge with Chris. We did a few top rope climbs to start and one to finish off (and I could hardly make my fingers work by then) but the rest was lead climbing which was so awesome. After a couple of climbs Craig encouraged us to try out a climb on one of the crazy lead walls I had only dreamed of ever climbing. It was pretty scary because you have to climb up quite far and start out over a very steep overhang before you even get to the first quick draw. But I made it all the way to the top (okay, I had to have a couple of breaks which was scary in itself)!!! Got to remember to breathe and relax though because Craig had to keep yelling up to remind me and I got my foot twisted on my rope at one point. Clipping in got pretty hard as I went up though because my fingers stopped functioning properly. It does make the other wall which is basically horizontal and uber ridiculous seem actually achievable.

Orienteering race (Rogaine - Mokoroa Stream) 1:27:31 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

Bad. It was muddy and super slippery and the green areas merged into the "white" areas and my brain seemed to only want to think about what I was going to write on the application I'd started last night. Super. But it was still quite fun. I am such a crappy runner though :(

Saturday Mar 26, 2011 #

7 PM

Run 38:04 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Bit of a run in the drizzle round some of my new favourite tracks but then it got dark and I got lost in dead end streets where I thought other tracks came out to...but I couldn't find them. I really only wanted to be out about half an hour but I wasn't anywhere near home by then so thought I'd just walk home by the time I got to Foodtown rather than run up the hill to home.

Walk 13:00 [1]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Brisk walk from Foodtown to home.

Friday Mar 25, 2011 #

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Cold and a headwind on the way there then raining on the way back but feeling quite good today.
6 AM

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 45:00 [4]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Tough but I was feeling surprisingly strong this morning despite the weekend. Sitting next to Rob is gonna make you work super hard though.

Thursday Mar 24, 2011 #

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Horrible headwind on the way there but cruised home (and only had to stop for 1 traffic light which was awesome).
6 AM

Run warm up/down 21:49 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

To the domain (10:48) and then back again after intervals (11:01). It's SO dark! And not even fully light on the way back now either. Pretty much crawled back to the gym afterwards I was so dead!

Run intervals 25:30 [4]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

6 x 3 minute sprints with 90 second recoveries round the fields in the Domain. Wanted to do something different but I hadn't got around to setting up my watch and I am still a little tired after the weekend so just did the usual. I thought I was terrible but when I compared it to last time I was actually faster and more consistent.
7 PM

Climbing (indoor - lead) 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Five Ten Anasazi Verde

Final night of the course. Learning to belay for lead climbing and then practicing falling and taking a fall. Bloody terrifying when you are hanging nearly 2 metres above your last clip and the instructor has your belayer give you even more slack then tells you to let go.

Wednesday Mar 23, 2011 #

7 PM

Climbing (indoor - lead) 45:00 [3]
shoes: Five Ten Anasazi Verde

First night of the lead climbing course. We spent most of the night tying knots (along with a crazy story about a bunny who turns into super bunny at the end and pushes the tree out of the way...it was actually surprisingly helpful when doing your main knot) and practising the different ways of clipping in. Putting it into practice was hard though and pretty scary especially the first time I went up without a top rope as well. Then we finished the night with some top rope belay practice in preparation for tomorrow. So not much actual climbing but still pretty intense.

Tuesday Mar 22, 2011 #

Road Bike 30:00 [2]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. The worst ride EVER. 2 punctures within about 10 minutes going to the gym and it was lucky that I had 2 spare tubes 'cause normally I only have 1. Then the whole ride back I was absolutely paranoid I was going to get another. It sucked. Oh, and my legs were like, biking is silly.
6 AM

Run (treadmill) 10:00 [4]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

I was feeling grumpy about the punctures so vented some of it on the treadmill!

Gym (arm weights and core) 25:00 [3]

Monday Mar 21, 2011 #

6 PM

Run 52:05 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Down round the lake then through Jaggers Bush and the other reserve out to Westmere Reserve then over to a track I'd never been on up from Coxs Bay which was pretty cool then got a bit lost because I couldn't read the street signs or see anything very well (I couldn't be bothered putting on my contacts and I hate my glasses so was running blind) but made it back via a route I used to run ages ago. Was pretty awesome out today but slow.

Sunday Mar 20, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

Nice relaxing walk on the beach and letting Michael win at mini golf. Not feeling too bad. Just a bit tired and quite hungry. It seems the harder I race, the harder it is to eat.

Saturday Mar 19, 2011 #

8 AM

Adventure Racing race (ARC 8hr) 6:30:00 [4]

8 hours? Clearly we burned through the course!

The first stage was getting our rafts to the other side of the channel to pick up a couple of checkpoints and then getting back again. Note how I didn't say 'paddle the raft' because that didn't really work so well so I swam most of the way and Michael swam, well, all of the way (with the raft). The current was bloody strong on the way back and I was completely knackered by the end. Plus the checkpoints were marked round the wrong way which was annoying.

Next stage was mtb to the rifle shoot and then to the transition. Pretty basic but I stuffed up my first 2 shots with the rifle which was frustrating. I think I was too excited!

Next stage was the trek and abseil. We had a little bit of fluffing round at CP0 after going into the wrong mine but then managed to get ahead of the people around us. The trek didn't seem to hard but was quite steep (especially when we missed the pink tape and climbed some cliff instead of going round!). But about CP4 Michael had a panic about the abseil and got all confused and we realised we'd missed it out. Oh well, it probably only cost us an extra 25/30 minutes as we went back for it from the transition. The abseil (25 metres apparently) was pretty cool though but not nearly long enough. I wanted to go again!

Stage 4 was just biking back to base. I don't know why they put the fastest estimate time of 1 hour 'cause it probably only took half that.

Final stage was a 2 hour mtb rogaine in the bike park. Because we were awesome (haha) we got them all despite it all being highly confusing and track names not fitting and just general map confusion (we are highly spoilt in orienteering). The ride back to base was epic. I was completely dead and Michael was pushing me pretty much the whole way to see if we could get back in time but we were 2 minutes late (worth it though for the points).

Probably the first race like this that I've gone hard and fast the whole way and I was about ready to collapse by the end. I was actually lucky I didn't blow out in the final mtb stage (it's good when your team mate can carry most of your gear when you're struggling).

And now we have a kayak for next year so we'll get to do the 12-hr! Yay!

Oh, and did I mention that we annihilated our grade AND were the only 8-hr team to get all of the mtb rogaine checkpoints?

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym.
6 AM

Run 24:41 [3] 4.54 km (5:26 / km)
(sick) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Nice little run from the gym along to the church and down the hill then up Bassett (which is longer than I thought...it goes up for a good km) then down Remuera Rd and along Broadway. No stopping even when I felt a bit dead at the top of the hill. Much better than the treadmill and it was even nice and hot this morning!

Gym (arm weights and core) 35:00 [3]
(sick)

Blah...

6 PM

Orienteering race (SS - Lloyd Elsmore) 57:52 [3] 9.5 km (6:05 / km)
(sick) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Good course for this map but I was still feeling a bit sick and feeling super unfit so the leg to #1 was a mission for a start (Allan says it was over 1km). Then I mucked around at #2 for way too long on the wrong side of the bush. The rest wasn't too bad apart from not seeing there wasn't a gap between the out of bounds areas going to #11, getting lost (whilst standing right next to the control) at #14, trying to dodge the football players and the crickers, having that damn annoying Friday song in my head and just general slowness and random route choices.
8 PM

Orienteering warm up/down 15:00 [2]
(sick) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Jogging round course 4 bringing in controls although I had to wait for a couple of groups who were still finishing on course 3.

Tuesday Mar 15, 2011 #

Note
(sick)

I really suck at being sick. Spent the day at home but ended up doing a massive clean and exhausting myself by lunchtime. Walked to the store to get tofu a bit later which was quite far enough. I do think I might be a bit better though...a bit.

Monday Mar 14, 2011 #

Note
(sick)

Had to leave work early and missed climbing. Bummer. This is so looking like turning into a repeat of last years ARC! But I did go for a walk later in the evening to try and cool the antsy feeling...

11 AM

Orienteering race (KP Support Event 2) 38:47 [4] 3.9 km (9:57 / km)
(sick) shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

No time to think as I was supposed to start as I was still crossing the fence. Anyway, felt pretty tired to start with but sort of warmed up into it a bit after a while. Could see Nic in the distance to #1 so ran him down by #3 then could see Tessa so caught up to her eventually and we pretty much ran together with Allan who caught us at #8 I think. #9 was mysterious but the rest wasn't too bad although I did some silly things. Quite fun but the swim in the lake afterwards was the best bit.

Saturday Mar 12, 2011 #

2 PM

Orienteering race (KP Support Event 1) 23:44 [3] 2.5 km (9:30 / km)
(sick) shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

SO hot! I was feeling pretty crap (turns out staying up late eating way too much popcorn and chocolate especially when you are sick is not a good idea...who knew?) and more than a little car sick so it was not a pleasant experience. Bumbled around at the first control then stuffed up #3 and #4 but the rest was okay although I shouldn't have taken the leg along the lake. Going round the road was way better in hindsight.
10 PM

Orienteering race (Katoa Po) 50:52 [3] 5.0 km (10:10 / km)
(sick) shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

I really don't like the dark but at least this year I had an awesome headlight! Had to start in a mass start (of 2!) for leg 4 (how I sneaked in to run leg 4 I don't know but it was fine by me!) but it was pretty much me by myself the whole way which was actually quite cool although I really stuffed up the end of the long leg (#5) by not going far enough along the marsh but thinking I'd gone too far and then promptly messed up #6 as well for good measure. Then it was all good until #11 where I was bumbling around on the wrong side of the hill. The rest was fine and I was really quite happy.

Friday Mar 11, 2011 #

11 AM

MTB 1:50:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Out at the bike park. Wasn't feeling the flashest but not too bad and figured I really could do with the ride before next weekend. It was okay. I mean the forest was beautiful, the trails pretty much perfect, the weather awesome and I wasn't riding too terribly but when you don't feel 100% it feels a bit flat. I pushed up a couple of small hills simply because I didn't have the energy but for once I didn't go into telling myself that meant I sucked.

Thursday Mar 10, 2011 #

Note
(sick)

Was going to do the Girls On Top run tonight and was actually quite looking forward to it but really, I'm not feeling super and I have Taupo this weekend so finally decided against it. But I was feeling antsy and stressed and the evening was so beautiful so I went for a walk. The Pasifika concert was happening in Western Springs so I went down through Jaggers Bush and then along a track I'd never been on (Lemington Reserve) and out to Westmere Reserve. Had to sit down there for a little while... It's always interesting walking round quiet streets. I heard one young girl telling someone very firmly that it only rains once a day and another house was listening to Band of Horses which made my night. Getting home again felt exhausting...I should have eaten before I went out but a couple of my flatmates have taken over the kitchen 2 nights in a row trying to create this cactus thing that they can supposedly get high on...weird.

Wednesday Mar 9, 2011 #

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. When did it get so bloody cold in the mornings?! I wore a t-shirt most of last week...
6 AM

Run (treadmill) 10:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Gym 35:00 [3]

Ooo, I am definitely stronger than I used to be...climbing is doing good things :)

Tuesday Mar 8, 2011 #

6 PM

Orienteering race (SS - Selfs Farm) 1:04:36 [3] 8.0 km (8:05 / km)
(sick) shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

I should have done course 2 or 3 but I drove out all the way and am a sucker for punishment so dragged myself round course 1. Felt okay until just over halfway when I started to feel a bit shit, then more shit and ended with a lot of walking! Did a lot of silly nav things too 'cause my brain was a bit lightheaded. The best one was how I kind of had this idea there were only 18 controls instead of 19 so started off to the finish (or where I thought the finish was) from there...took a little bit to work out that, well, nothing fitted!!!

Monday Mar 7, 2011 #

5 PM

Climbing (indoor - TR) 2:00:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Five Ten Anasazi Verde

At Extreme Edge with Chris. Feeling rather under the weather (sandpaper throat and dizzy) but climbing quite awesomely for a change! Managed the physical blue overhang this time which had me buzzing and also got up the green overhang with the super big reaches but that wasn't all that hard really. Then we practiced going up and down several times on the yellow 16 overhang they will teach us to lead on in a couple of weeks. Going down is bloody scary especially as we got each other to have the rope slack for the climb. We also had to have 10 second pauses on each clipin bit going both ways. Finished with a few dead hangs just to really kill the fingers and arms. Quite dizzy afterwards though...

Sunday Mar 6, 2011 #

Note

Was going to go to the bike park since the group I was going with on Saturday decided it wasn't such a good idea that morning. But I kind of felt weird and super super down so I just hibernated pretty much all day although I did eventually leave the house for a walk round the lake. Still feeling really weird and frustratingly guilty for not going out to the bike park. I'm going to suck at ARC at this rate :(

Saturday Mar 5, 2011 #

12 PM

Run 33:10 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Ran from home down and then up and up to Cyco to pick up my bike (about 15:35) then once I'd ridden home again I did a super short run down to Jagger's Bush, around the lake and then back up to home again (about 17:35). SO muggy and even after a super cold shower I was dripping in sweat. Annoying.

Road Bike 10:00 [2]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Estimate of time cruising back from the bike shop (well, sort of cruising...decided the brake pads are too tight and once I'd done all the downhill I still had to go back up the hill to my place). Loving the new bright yellow handlebar tape!
9 PM

Orienteering race (SS - Ambury (night)) 43:13 [3] 4.2 km (10:17 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

I debated not going because the weather had been so crap all day but thought I should probably test out the light before next week...super bright (thanks Michael!!). It was actually super fun, although super easy. I did manage to stuff up the last control though which was a bit embarrassing and didn't have the optimal route choice to #17 (or 18 - I can't remember which one it was now).

Friday Mar 4, 2011 #

Road Bike 40:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym then (a bit later) up the hill to Cyco to drop off my bike. I'm getting yellow handlebar tape! I am so excited!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, I rode off down the road this morning without my helmet so had to ride back again. Sigh.
6 AM

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 45:00 [4]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

You know, the usual. It was tough. I thought about asking Lincoln why we couldn't have a class like this. I can see it already...absolute carnage.

Thursday Mar 3, 2011 #

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym.
6 AM

Run warm up/down 21:10 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

To the domain and back. On the way there it was so dark I kept almost tripping up on the uneven footpath. Felt so sluggish on the way back afterwards, like my legs didn't want to function. 10:38 warmup, 10:32 warmdown.

Run intervals 25:30 [4]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

6 x 3 minute intervals with 90 second recoveries. Didn't feel too bad until the last 2 which pretty much wiped me out. But dug in as hard as I could.
6 PM

Climbing (indoor - TR) 1:30:00 [3]

At Extreme Edge with Chris. Climbing quite well (after a considerable warmup!) on the straight up climbs but weak as anything on the overhangs tonight so didn't try anything too curly. Ooo, the new shoes are nice but my feet are sore after each climb and taking them off is a bugger since they have laces.

Wednesday Mar 2, 2011 #

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To and from the gym. Tired.
6 AM

Peloton (Spin) class intervals 45:00 [4]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Feeling a bit shit this morning and my right knee was a bit weird (although it feels heaps better now). I actually even considered leaving after the first few tracks but everyone would have seen me so I stuck it out but it was rough.

Tuesday Mar 1, 2011 #

Road Bike 40:00 [2]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

To work then to the Domain and then home again. The first hill on the way to work is fine but then I just get tired on the second one especially when I'm trying my best not to sweat too much. And I hate Ponsonby Road and I had to plow through pedestrians on Park Road because the cars didn't leave any space.
6 PM

Orienteering (SS - Auckland Domain) 1:12:01 [3] 7.4 km (9:44 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

Apparently I ran (walked/crawled) 9km so perhaps I didn't take the optimal route this week. I had a pretty terrible run and I twisted my right ankle quite badly twice near the start so was hobbling round for a bit until it decided to come right (but now my right knee isn't so happy). Should have worn different shoes 'cause I slid past 2 controls (couldn't stop in time!) and came back covered in dirt.
