Note
(rest day)

The parents had arrived by the time I got home from work so yeah, it was busy.

Thursday Jan 30, 2014 #

6 PM

MTB 1:02:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

A quick ride from home up Rapaki at a fairly solid pace into a rather strong headwind then over the Mt Vernon track and back again, dodging all the riders and walkers on their way up. Wrist was fine until it wasn't fine at all (about 1/3 of the way down...?).

Wednesday Jan 29, 2014 #

6 PM

Run 1:09:13 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Wednesday night run, the coasteering/birthday edition. From Taylors Mistake up the track and then around the coast for a while which was rather exciting but a bit painful on my wrist then up to the top and around a bit more and down for a swim and delicious mexican.

Out to the time trial.
6 PM

Road Bike race (Old Tai Tapu Rd TimeTrial) 25:22 [4] 16.0 km (1:35 / km)
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Apparently this was the night to get a PB but it just wasn't to be...turns out we were in the small chainring by mistake the whole time which explains why I had to spin so hard at the back. Still, it was an okay time but not quite what we were hoping for. So dead at the end.

Road Bike warm up/down 34:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Home again!

Sunday Jan 26, 2014 #

8 AM

Run 44:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Getting lost at Center of NZ and Branford Park. Quite impressed I could get so lost!! Even ended up at the summit thingy twice without intending to.

Saturday Jan 25, 2014 #

5 PM

Run 2:28:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

With Imogene up Fringed Hill and down with some bush bashing. Was good fun!! I want to move to Nelson! My silly stomach had some bad moments on the way down though :-(

Thursday Jan 23, 2014 #

7 PM

Road Bike 35:00 [3]

Quick little ride with M on the tandem. I feel so fat.

Wednesday Jan 22, 2014 #

6 PM

Run 1:24:39 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Wednesday night jog/walk from Governers Bay. Worst possible shoes for slippery rocks and leaves so basically I sucked. Wished I'd just gone for a run by myself to be honest. Not sure I'm ready for so many people at this point.

Still chasing down that elusive sub-25 but the wind was too brutal tonight. Apparently we missed fast conditions last week :-(
7 PM

Road Bike warm up/down 35:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Home again...slowly.

Monday Jan 20, 2014 #

6 PM

Run 1:04:25 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

From home along the river then up and down in the valleys a bit. Legs feeling great and felt speedy but was worried about my stomach coming out to kill me. Seemed to balance the amount of downhill in one go to just on the tipping level so that was good.

Sunday Jan 19, 2014 #

1 PM

Road Bike 2:30:05 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Cruising round on the tandem with Michael for good, hot times on the Governers/Gebbies loop. Stopped for delicious ice blocks at the supermarket on the way home.

Saturday Jan 18, 2014 #

4 PM

Road Bike 3:20:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

On the tandem with Michael, Joe and Liz. From Hilltop along the summit road then down to Little Akaloa then over some steep but awesome climbs to Okains Bay for hot chips (hiding in a cave to keep out of the freezing wind). Then up to the summit road and back to the car. Very cool little loop. And for once it wasn't us getting the punctures!

Friday Jan 17, 2014 #

7 PM

Run 1:20:16 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

With Michael up onto Farm Track then battling the super strong headwinds to the top of Mt Vernon then cruising down the valley.

Walk 12:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Walking the last little bit home along the river 'cause my leg was feeling funny.

Thursday Jan 16, 2014 #

Too tired. Too much to do.

Wednesday Jan 15, 2014 #

Tuesday Jan 14, 2014 #

6 PM

Run 1:18:13 [3]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 8

Up the valley track and Mt Vernon then down Farm Track and home. Didn't intend to go to the top but felt much better than expected...until about 1/3 of the way down where I felt really quite awful.

Monday Jan 13, 2014 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

No bike commuting for me this week so I walked instead. Planned to run home from work and then run some more but felt too tired by the end of the day so just walked. Went for a leisurely stroll along the river with M in the evening as well. So so tired.

Sunday Jan 12, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Much driving and then crashing on the couch watching Doctor Who. 2:30am ferries are pretty cruel.

MTB race (MTBO Carnival - Race 6) 1:42:41 [3] 21.7 km (4:44 / km) +440m 4:18 / km
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Whakarewarewa.
After feeling so ridiculously anxious before the start where I couldn't breathe and was in danger of crying any time someone tried to talk to me, I felt fairly okay once I picked up my map (apart from wondering how the hell to fold it for my map board). The start went okay. Got a little confused on #6 and took a bit of a dud route then crashed on my way up the single track to #7 but for once landed on my left side so I was rather thankful. Got confused and missed the track I wanted going to #9 (I got confused in this exact area last time I was here but I never seem to learn). Then I started to get serious brain fade after #12 and dithered so much at every single intersection. Totally freaked out at the idea of having to ride the Grade 5 track to #15 but it was just some rather large obstacles (and a lovely big cliff) to push the bike over. Glad to finish but wasn't particularly happy with my ride. My wrist is really really not happy. I think I'm going to have to walk to work for at least a day or two.

MTB 10:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

From the holiday park to the event centre.
12 PM

MTB race (MTBO Carnival - Race 5) 37:53 [3] 6.5 km (5:50 / km) +55m 5:35 / km
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Redwoods.
Yep, I seem to always suck at MTBO sprints and this was no exception. Despite getting to #1 with no problems I just couldn't work out what was going on and was so confused as to what was going on for #2. Then stupidly went up the stairs for #3 instead of whizzing round the road. Couldn't find the start triangle on the new map (at #5) for ages then blundered around finding #7 long before #6. Searched for far too long on the wrong track for #9 (far FAR too long). Panicked at #12 for no reason what so ever. And yeah, basically it was not very good! And no Rob, I do not give a damn what time Tim Robertson did the course in okay? I do not need to be made to feel even more useless thank you.
1 PM

MTB 10:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Back to the holiday park with M.
3 PM

MTB 2:35:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

From the holiday park over to the forest for some good times and some nice climbs with M. The single track is so much fun! Why can't Christchurch have some riding that is not flat but also not absolutely terrifying and ridiculously steep?
We made it out just by curfew...

11 AM

MTB warm up/down 10:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

To the start. At this stage you could actually ride most of the way. Of course, the rain (complete with thunder) began once I got up there.

MTB race (MTBO Carnival - Race 4) 3:17:47 [3] 19.5 km (10:09 / km) +670m 8:39 / km
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Maramarua.
Quite possibly the worst MTBO race EVER. Was okay (apart from much dithering, and a bad initial route choice to #6 before realising there was no way I was going to be able to push up that many contours in clay that I kept slipping over in) until I stupidly allowed Emily to convince me her route choice to #7 was better than mine...it wasn't. But then came the real horror. Got almost to #8 before finding the mud that would stop both tyres from rolling, even when pushed. Luckily Emily and M appeared from the other direction, having taken a much worse route choice, and helped me carry my bike. On the whole I can handle this stupid wrist but it's times like this that I feel so helpless (and whenever there are fences). There is just no way I can carry my bike for anything more than about 1 metre, especially when it is now about 2 or 3 times the weight!! To escape the mud I took an epically long route to #9, shadowed by M who had abandoned his course but had come to the horrible realisation that I am far too stubborn to do that but might (definitely) need his support/manly strength. Had a crash on the way along the single track and landed on my wrist. Bad bad bad. But I was too angry at the whole course/map etc to feel much pain at that point. Took a very long route to #13 via the last controls to avoid the climb and, undoubtably, more horrendous cloggy mud. Finished. Seemed a bit pointless though. So over it. Also so over being squashed into a car and all that with all the others so kind of had an explosion on the drive to Rotorua afterwards. Desperately in need of space.

Wednesday Jan 8, 2014 #

11 AM

Run 1:20:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

In the forest with M. I miss the forest. We even had to rescue a stag which was caught in one of the temporary fences. I wanted to ride but common sense prevailed.
The run naturally finished with more swimming as all good runs really ought to.

MTB warm up/down 10:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Cruising round a bit of Saturday's map with M.

MTB (MTBO Carnival - Race 3) 1:15:37 [3] 10.6 km (7:08 / km) +315m 6:13 / km
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Jessie's Garden.
Slow start (no mistakes or anything, just me being me i.e. slow) and Sarah had pretty much caught me by #3. She basically rode behind me until we got to the farmland where she threw her bike over the fence and was off while I floundered for ages trying to wrestle the damn thing over. By the time I was back on she was way out of sight. Anyway, got round the farmland okay but was seriously overheating and was very glad to get back in the forest. All was mostly fine (apart from heading to #19 instead of #15 but I'm not sure it would have changed things all that much) until the easiest control ever at #16 where somehow I managed to get so confused I rode round and round in circles and up many unnecessary contours. Then on the way to #19 I missed the track I wanted and found myself pushing up a steep hill and wondering what had happened. Stupid! Then got stuck behind Christine going into #20 but I couldn't be bothered trying to pass as I was so frustrated about making such silly mistakes. Cruised behind various slower people all the way to the finish.

MTB warm up/down 15:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Nice little ride up the hill back to the event centre. No seriously, I quite enjoyed it!
4 PM

Putting out/bringing in controls 40:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Running round with Emily bringing in some controls and then cruising back up the hill.

MTB 22:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Whizzing back through the forest behind Chris and Emily from the event centre down to Rob's place for a delicious swim.

Monday Jan 6, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Swimming, paddle boarding, eating, more swimming and walking on the Whangaparaoa. Thanks to my awesome brother for letting us all invade his house.

Sunday Jan 5, 2014 #

11 AM

MTB race (MTBO Carnival - Race 2) 1:42:27 [3] 19.6 km (5:14 / km) +330m 4:49 / km
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Riverhead.
Feeling way more tired today. Was okay until #3 where I couldn't ride most of the single track to #3 then blundered around dithering as usual on #10 and got super confused on the last control. Started to pour down with rain in the last 15 minutes which made everything slick and a bit miserable but it was better than it was for those who started later and had to ride most of their race in the rain.

Saturday Jan 4, 2014 #

2 PM

MTB warm up/down 10:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Riding up to the start. Running so late it wasn't funny and everyone seemed to be stressed and/or grumpy...me included.

MTB race (MTBO Carnival - Race 1) 1:47:50 [3] 15.2 km (7:06 / km) +465m 6:09 / km
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Marquita's Garden.
No time to catch my breath after the ride to the start but since I wasn't feeling like riding very hard it didn't matter. Cruised around the course taking my time so I didn't go getting lost. So nice to be riding these tracks again. All was mostly okay until the open section where I didn't see the fences, let alone the gates, marked on the map and struggled to get my bike over them. Then just died trying to ride/push across the grass. Total brain fade for the last couple of controls.

Friday Jan 3, 2014 #

11 AM

MTB 2:20:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

With M from Kinloch along the road to the start of the track then whizzing down to Kawakawa Bay for a delicious swim. Finished with the fun times climb over the hill back to Kinloch. Good times...until almost the end of the track where I had a slow motion crash where I caught my handlebar on a tree and landed on my wrist (couldn't I possibly have landed anywhere else?). There was most definitely a scream. Feeling surprisingly fresh today though!

Thursday Jan 2, 2014 #

2 PM

MTB 1:45:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

With M along a section of the Waikato River Trail. SO hot and feeling a tad shattered.

Wednesday Jan 1, 2014 #

MTB 11:00:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Rather epic ride with M...always a good way to start the year off. Started at Bennydale and biked along the road to Pureora then along the Timber Trail to Ongarue and then back along the road to Bennydale in time for dinner...and I didn't even throw a tantrum this time (but my wrist was threatening to)!
Fantastic ride. The Timber Trail is amazing...quite possibly the best adventury mtbing I've done. The riding was so much fun, not too technical and so flowy. The forest is amazing (the bird life was epically loud through the first section). Definitely a ride I want to do again.
