Rogaine race (Geraldine Autumn Muster) 4:31:00 [4]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 8

Good times frolicking in the hills with Emily. Legs were surprisingly good all things considered but a bit more tired than usual on the uphills. We planned a pretty good route and also made good decisions in terms of cutting it down to get back in time so was very happy with that since that's normally our weak spot. But we did have a bit of a brain meltdown around 2 1/2 hours in where we ended up bashing through the wrong bit of forest - and the bit we'd chosen had to be the most impenetrable bush out there!

Note

I saw my dream road bike while up on hilltop watching Le Race - a carbon road bike with flat handlebars (okay, not quite my dream road bike - I think it would need disc brakes as well to be perfect 'cause then braking would be more painless). I mean, I want to use conventional road bars but it isn't happening any time soon.

Run 4:05:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

The double fenceline. From the Little River school up to hilltop via the back road in time to see Le Race people come by. Hung around for 10 minutes in case I saw M and was just about to carry on when he came past so that gave me a boost of energy. From hilltop up through the Montgomery Reserve bush and into the super thick cloud then along the main track over to the Port Levy Saddle and down to Little River again (a most brutal descent!). Took it pretty easy with lots of walking on the climbs so my legs wouldn't be too tired for tomorrow. Would love to do it again and run it faster.

Rogaine race (RR Sport Wicked Rogaine) 1:58:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Flyroc 310 (grey)

The Bowenvale map with Lara. Lots of cool control sites (exciting waterfalls!!!) but I didn't realise how tired Lara still was so my planning was too optimistic and I didn't cut it down very well. Good fun though.

Walk 2:00:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Bit of a miserable walk from home up Rapaki into a driving southerly and then down again into darkness! Head felt clearer when I got back home again though.

Easy run from M's grandma's place. Dunedin streets are cool to run round. Well, at least the ones round here are. Legs felt surprisingly fantastic!

Run 5:20:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

With M from Woodhaugh Park up through Ross Creek and the Pineapple to Flagstaff, along Swampy Ridge and down the Leith saddle track to the motorway. All that was lovely and it was deliciously sunny. Then it all started to go bad. From Sullivan's Dam it looked like there was a track up to the top of Mt Cargill and there is...sort of. It starts off okay, just slippery with dodgy looking boardwalk things but once you cross under the powerlines the track deteriorates sharply. So much windfall to climb over or around so you lose the track markers (because the track is pretty vague as it is) and clearly no one goes up this way these days! Anyway, vaguely nearing the top, in the pine forest bit it got ridiculous so we clambered our way out into the forestry area and eventually to the top. Great view...not. Could barely even see the tower thingy from 20 metres away. At least the track back down was nice. Brutal few kms on the road back to the car. Had to walk for a few minutes in the middle there.
Anyway, unless you are Greig, don't go up that track. It sucks. If you are Greig - it is beautiful and such a smooth, easy to run track. You'll love it.

MTB 57:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Too busy and stressed last night so since we would be leaving straight after work I got up early. Felt a bit rough! Just up Rapaki, along the road to the top of Huntsbury to discover that every sheep on the Port Hills had decided to sleep on the track so just went back the same way I came. It's been a while since I've ridden in the dark.

Road Bike 23:00 [2]

On Miss Monaco out to Ferrymead. I even passed someone (up a hill which is probably less surprising). Didn't know she had it in her!

Orienteering race (Ferrymead) 27:12 [4] 3.0 km (9:04 / km)
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 8

So hard!!! Took forever to work out where the hell #1 was then it was sort of okay for a little while until trying to get to the map change then once I got the new map, oh god help! Got into a bit of a flow after a while but then got all shaky again after the map flip and completely confused myself at #25 (as if I wasn't already completely confused!). But good times.

Home again with a bit of a detour to check out Rob and Jana's possible new house.

Road Bike warm up/down 33:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Out to the time trial. Hard work. This bike is making awful sounds these days!
6 PM

Road Bike race (Old Tai Tapu Rd TimeTrial) 25:48 [4] 16.0 km (1:37 / km)
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Last time trial of the season and boy was it awful. Not only was there horrible horrible wind but we now have slow tyres on (the last puncture on the back wheel was the final straw) and the drum brake is rubbing really bad so actually getting under 26 minutes was not too terrible. M started out in what felt like some epically hard gear and I tried to push through for as long as possible but it all got too much and I had to yell at him to change down. After that we changed between gears at pretty good times but I was so so shattered by the end. Got off the bike and nearly fell over I was so dizzy.

Road Bike warm up/down 30:00 [2]

Home again. So tired and hungry! Lucky we had reasonably favourable winds.

Run 1:06:44 [3]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 8

Stupid stupid route! Thought I'd do a route with smaller ups and downs rather than a bash up to the top so headed up Farm Track a little way before heading down into the Albert Terrace valley. At this point I should have thought more carefully. The rather loud sound of rushing water that I could hear from Farm Track was probably an indication I should have thought a bit more carefully. Anyway, got into the valley and every stream crossing was more like a river crossing. It was not exactly super but I figured it had to be good for me in some way. But then I got across the last stream crossing and nearly at the edge of the forest to discover a rather large landslip complete with huge fallen pine trees (probably the cause of the slips being so big). Stupidly I thought I could get around them so started climbing only to discover that I was going to get stuck above cliffs trying to get down into the valley again. Had a bit of a freak out then realised it was either bash up through the forest to who knows where (probably someone's private land I suspect since there was a fence) or go back down again. So down I went and consequently got a bit covered in mud getting down the side of the landslide I'd just climbed up then very wet in the streams. Lucky it was a warm night! Eventually made my way back up onto Farm Track then down into the next valley over but was a bit over being wet and muddy by then so just went and ran up the steps on the Murray Ansley and back home via the park.

It was quite wet and I was quite lazy/busy. I did run to the market in the rain then do some good weights training standing with all my veggies waiting for the bread man to set up and then getting everything home though.

10 AM

Run 6:40:00 [3] 32.0 km (12:30 / km)
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Cool loop with M up Mt Oxford and down to the Wharfdale Hut, along the Wharfdale and then back to the start again. Beautiful weather once we got above the cloud. My shoes, despite being ridiculously comfy, absolutely suck at going down super steep, loose, dusty rock (which I tend to suck at anyway so they make it even more of a nightmare) so consequently the last descent down to the hut was terrible and so slow M could probably have gone up and down several times in the space of time it took me to get down and I got super grumpy at poor M. But the rest was good. Tried to go at long rogaine pace (walking uphill, jogging downhill and flat) but there were some patches on the way up to the saddle that I got too tired. Thanks M for letting me do a longer loop than you really wanted to do!!! :-)

Road Bike 1:42:00 [3]

Such a gorgeous evening so M and I headed out on the tandem up Mt Pleasant. The stupid drum brake was rubbing the whole way but on a more positive note we now have stronger tyres so hopefully we can avoid more punctures on this silly bike while we unpatiently wait for the new one.

12 PM

Run 1:22:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Plan B after we slept in too much for plan A. With M from Purau Saddle up the track to attempt to find the linking track over to Mt Fitzgerald but we only had an old rogaine map from little river which didn't show what we needed it to show and the mist was so thick we couldn't see very far ahead so after bashing along a fenceline for a bit we turned around and were going to head up Mt Herbert but it really was ridiculously thick mist so we just headed back down. Disaster :-(
3 PM

Run 2:07:36 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Plan C! Because M is awesome he dropped me off at the far end by Coppers Knob and I ran back via the tops and round about then down Huntsbury where he met me at the top of the road. Much more successful! The run was good but I am just not feeling right. This whole week feels like a disaster.

Run 26:12 [3]

MTB 2:05:00 [3]

Had the morning off before graduation and all that so went for a ride up Huntsbury, along the road then down to Governers Bay and along the walkway there Back the same way. Was good.

Run 57:12 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

After kind of being caged in for the last few days I could finally get out for a run. Yay! But everything was closed and I wasn't feeling like checking out mudslides and all that so with limited time I just headed up Huntsbury as far as the power pylon and back again. It smells funny and is all dusty down by the river. My nose and throat were not thrilled about that. But my legs felt really good (apart from running downhill which they really didn't enjoy).

After a rather epic ride home in the storm it became rather clear that perhaps going for a run was not such a good idea so just did some stuff inside. M braved the storm to get vital supplies and informed me the river has burst its banks on one side of us and I suspect it will on the other side too by the morning. Could require a bit of wading to get to work tomorrow!

Road Bike 1:05:00 [3]

Out to Rangiora on the tandem with M. It just kept getting colder and colder and I was a grumpy icicle by the time we got there.
9 AM

Run 10:00 [1]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7

Jogging round the first part of the Duathlon with Rhea.
10 AM

Run 35:00 [1]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7

More jogging with Rhea round the second run section. Pretty much made her run the whole way which was pretty impressive considering she'd just done 15km of biking on the tandem with M beforehand.
1 PM

Road Bike 4:40:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Home from Rangiora via the Ashley and Waimak gorges. Apparently this means we can now call ourselves real road cyclists...or something.

Saturday Mar 1, 2014 #

3 PM

Run 2:02:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Started off with M and we frolicked up through the tussock to the top of Montgomery Spur then down into the valley where M ran back home and I did some more tussock frolicking back up to Farm Track and Mt Vernon then along the tops and eventually down into Bowenvale.

Road Bike 10:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

M met me at the bottom of Bowenvale with the tandem...so cute!

Road Bike 17:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Taking Miss Monaco for a spin to see if I could get her up a hill.
