Note

Well it is time to change the name of one our hill climbs at Chedoke. Nancy Green was a Canadian ski hero. She got a slope named after her at Chedoke. Today she is a climate change denialist...and a Senator. Chedoke ski hill closed because the season became too short to be economical due to global warming. It is no longer a ski hill so why name it after one of Harper's senators? The official re-name the hill competition closes in one week - post your ideas here!

“I have to admit that what I read tells me that there is not a consensus among scientists, there are many different points of view and different kinds of research happening out there. One of the things that I am starting to see now is quite a few studies showing that we may be heading into a period of global cooling, which would maybe be a lot more problematic for Canada than global warming. Our country is on the cool side.” - Nancy Green Raine

THOMASS Caledon and Adenture Running Kids Snow Day! Another great day of running, nav and fun in the snow. I enjoyed the course and after #2 ran alone for most of the race. only saw one person (noah m) from 2 to the finish. impressed with several of the ARK Attack kids' performances on a tough course for their age and experience. Some sledding after the race and watched The ARk Snow Day activities where kids seemed to be having an absolute blast. The best food you will find at any O, AR, or trail race in Canada topped off a fun day. Thanks Bash, Keith, Crash, Rocky, Phatty, 'Bent, Lenanimal, Goose and the other caledonians!

My fave race of the year - the Salomon Snowshoe Raid. This year I raced with 'Bent in masters. Lots of fun and a great course mixed with some great nav, some full on trail running, some road running and a well designed matrix at the end.

I don't think we could have done this race any better (with the exception of me being in better shape with a better set of knees). We had 7 minutes to spare and only skipped one CP. I missed maybe 20-30seconds over the 3 hours with the nav. Just when the tough nav was over my knees really started to really hurt and thats when 'Bent took over with the tow rope and towed me the final 7.5km! Thanks 'Bent.

Wadd Squad Nav! Following AG! as she ran the 2010 GLOF F-Elite middle (19 minutes behind AliC's time). Some troubles in the K2 spaghetti but two K2 summits in one day! Great conditions for O. Just a little snow and soft ground.

CP count: 11 (Tot: 11).

After swimming and running on a beach for over a week a basement bike ride seemed so totally wrong. Heck indoor cycling is always so totally wrong yet at the same time it is unfortunately what I need to do given the lack of snow. Time to get to the MAC pool for some water running and swimming.

"GHO to Niagara" this spring:

GRR in Niagara in early April. A sneak peek of the course tomorrow?

COF HPP camp in Niagara at Easter (with GRR)

ARK in Niagara starts later in April. it is only a pilot project but should be awesome. Best part of this ARK expansion was that a group approached us and came with a bunch of enthusiasm and resources. Very professional request. If this is a success the next step is to develop a schools race in Niagara in 2-3 years.

On a related note...I watched bits of the republican debate last night while also watching parts of the movie 2012. There were a lot of similarities between the two. ie., create a new reality of fiction. They were both quite funny to watch because of the reality distortions (or is that anti science or spin?).

Just finished a great trip and much needed vacation to Hawaii. Just got caught up on reading AP and have read several athlete training and goals reviews and wondered if I should do the same.

I have now logged training for 10 years on AP. It would be easy to define the first five years as the good years and the last five as the bad when I reviewed training hours and my AR and O race results. Or put another way it was the five years of "racing" period followed by the five years of "trying to recover from an injury to race again" period. While the first few years post-injury my O and running training hours increased, 2011 was very tough on the knees. Although I had a few scalps of nat. team members at the Canadian middle champs in 2011, the reality is that racing again is really out of the question for me and that I need to focus my training on just fun and something else. That something else is easy to find - coaching and Adventure Running Kids. Getting my butt kicked by AG! again while racing on the beach makes the coaching goal easy though it is too bad coaching the US team a few years back didn't work out. I enjoyed that so with new energy will likely find coaching fun. It was bad timing.

Perhaps reading the Steve Jobs biography while in Maui inspired me but the next five years for me will also be all about growing ARK. Mark Adams is right in that O clubs need to think more like businesses. So why did Apple succeed? When Jobs came back to Apple they adopted the line "Think Different". They controlled the hardware and software. Apple also didn't do surveys about what people wanted because they argued people didn't know what they wanted yet. I'd like to believe that introduction of ARK has followed a similar strategy. ARK totally rethinks how to delivery a kids program in orienteering. The curriculum and product is very controlled. (We trademarked the program to protect that). If I had asked the O community what kids program they wanted it would not be ARK-like. it would be small, skills focused, moving to different parks each week, cheap, run by the same crew of volunteers, etc. It is time for ARK to grow but in a controlled manner. Small can be good too but our sport needs more junior participation and so does AR. In five years from now we will see just where ARK has gone.

Beach run before flying home. We just missed the 'we are over booked and need a few people to give up their seat for $800 and another day in Maui' offer. another day in paradise and almost $2.5K in the pocket would have been an awesome end to an awesome holiday.

Think I saw Alex Kerr in Kona today. I'll have to email him.

Training after one week in Hawaii.

Highlight of the week was sunrise at the top of Haleakala on the 10th anniversary to the day of when Emma came out of isolation post bone marrow transplant. That was closely followed by our jog/hike to a waterfall near Hana through the bamboo forest as recommended by Baloney and Trav. Thanks guys for the suggestion. It was awesome. oh yeah and the beaches and snorkeling are incredible.

Hawaii geography is stunning! Wish my knee was Ok to run more here (re-injured it in a boogie board accident, oops). We finish this much needed vacation in Volcano NP.
