Orienteering 50:00 [3] ***

A well designed THOMASS by Tiny in a great (albeit Tiny) area that lives up to its name (Sudden).

The race was fun. Off the start my legs had no kick. Legs were feeling the effects of yesterday for sure. I think I was in 20th spot after the prologue off the start of the race. Got into the detailed stuff for the first few CP's and started to gain some positions. The forest got scrappy after that but the woods running was better on the legs. Decided to take my handicap again and did the box as B, E, D, C. Saw 'Bent at the half way point in the box and knew he was running well. Piller caught me late in the box and was running better than I so I let him punch CP7 first (we later found out that Waterloo Engineering only can count to 5 without making a computer program and so he took a higher handicap and DQ'd. We decided to name that box-fail as Pillerin'. Chris pulled away on the climbs in the southerly detailed stuff and then I was in a foot race with AG! then Bash. Got a gap on them and then the trail running again was hurting the legs and I was super tired. Looked over my shoulder only to see the effects of Bash's month of run training in full effect. She was gaining on me quickly. Fortunately the finish was close enough to hold her off. I ended up a surprising 2nd (I think) behind UKR's top orienteer.... Teo :/

Fun race. Thanks Stars. Time includes 10 minutes of some quick control picking in the detailed stuff (after a much needed rest) during my cool-down (extra 8 checkpoints).

Running 20:00 [3]

good warm-up incl. some A's, B's and C's and short cool down including some more drills.

Testing a portion of the GRR course with Pathetic. Had to cut it short as I was almost over two hours as it was.

Pretty awesome stuff except where we got lost for about 10 minutes. (I'll let Pathetic explain it).

But that created the perfect opportunity to do an experiment that was suggested by some Harvard dude recently. Pathetic was wearing his "illegal by US Champs standards" Garmin 305 while I was wearing my "somewhat illegal by US Champs standards" Garmin 405. While lost we decided to race to the next checkpoint but he decided to go into map mode on his GPS and relocate while I could only use map and compass. Experiment findings? 1) GPS was useless compared to map and compass, 2) O in Niagara is super awesome, 3) Harvard? meh. ;-)

Anyway, GRR Raid teams are in for an absolute real treat at this year's race.

Knees are trashed for tomorrow though.

Note

The spring session of Adventure Running Kids in Hamilton starts three weeks today and we just hit 147 kids! Very much on pace to easily break our autumn session of 155 kids (max we can take is 180). Wednesday at 5:30 has already sold out the 60 kid limit.

Interestingly our contact in Niagara anticipates we will sell out our 40 kid (max) pilot project in Niagara.

It also looks like ARK will place 2nd in the OTF People's Choice Awards. Thanks to everyone for the support. It has been awesome.

I should have realized that today was going to be a crappy day when Etoile locked me out of the house while I was putting out the recycling (and she drove off to work). It just got worse and worse.
