Orienteering 2:45:00 [3]

SSR10.0 with Tarno. AG! was injured and Rydlo was sick so a last minute team change was in order. Tarno and I haven't raced SSR together before and I think only one RTR together before so this was fun. With fewer top teams this year we were concerned we would have to do a lot of breaking trail. My knee has been quite sore for a few weeks and I hadn't been On snowshoes this winter while Tarno is still recovering from a bad ankle injury. Well let's just say we ended up doing a lot breaking trail today and right off the bat. I broke trail all the way to CP1 in the box and then picked up a bit of Logie's trail to CP4 but he was wandering off his bearing so sucked it up and took my own route. Ran into Timato at 4 but noticed he and Logie were too far right ennroute to 6 so I cut off and spiked 6 and then broke trail on a direct line to the meeting place with Tarno. we were leading but that meant We had to continue to break trail (i.e. Tarno). He was a machine for a Grandfather! not unexpectedly Tim and noshnoj caught us two CPs later and then Timato and Tarno traded off leading and breaking trail through all the diamond and double blacks. with just two more of those to get Logie and Harps caught us and the race for the podium positions were all together. i tried to get Tarno to stop leading and Logie-Harps
seemed content on continuing to let others lead the way (or at least that makes for a better story). ;-) I then went against that strategy to give up the breaking trail and took the lead and broke trail to the last black diamond. we had 50 minutes to get back to the matrix check in but still had to climb the escarpment. part way up I had Tarno start to tow me and the three teams were together to just before 225? (blue CP) but Tarno got a snowshoe issue and had to readjust but it was frozen from a stream crossing. the other teams pulled away there and we realized with limited Nav left and very likely broken trails to all CPs we weren't going to beat them in a foot race but we could if they got penalty points. so we skipped two 25 pointers to play it safe to make sure we got to the matrix check in on time (I learned my lesson last year by being matrix'ed). We ended up getting to the check in with 7 minutes to spare and probably could have got the two we skipped after all. we then picked up the last four 25 pointers near the finish but not before a funny event took place. Tarno was still towing me and we passed a guy on a narrow trail but he then inadvertently tripped me while stepping back onto the trail just when I was about to pass him. I was reading my map at the time and totally face planted. the face was the first to hit the snow and my glasses went flying but Tarno was so strong he then dragged me about 50cm with my face smushed in the snow. ugh!

we were the first of the top teams to finish but alas no penalties for Logie-Harps (1450 points)!so we ended up 2nd (1400 points). Tim and Eddie had skipped a CP in the matrix so were in third behind us.

Tarno was so strong with his running, towing and nav. he nailed everything and I only lead navigated to 6 of the 22 CPs (3 of which were in the matrix). Tarno and/or Timato did the rest. I was content to follow along as I was pretty tired for the last hour of the race. we maybe lost 15 seconds on the southernmost CP but im gonna call this a perfect race navigation wise. my knee behaved thanks to vitamin I and I ate and drank well.

thanks Bob for 10 great years of hosting the SSR! my fave race of the year!

Note

Adventure Running X (ARX) is a program for teens and starting in the spring will be in all ARK locations. Meghan Rance will be head coach and coordinator for ARX.

If you know some high school students interested in adventure running or AR then please point them to this video and to this web page (some locations are filling up fast for the spring). The aim is to develop a strong inter-location racing league for the teens. Who knows where the video was filmed?

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Recumbent while reviewing lecture notes. Likely need to taper if I have any chance of keeping up to AG! in the SSR. #towrope

Check out Turbo's video from filming of season#3 of Boundless. How many places (and people) do you recognize? Can't wait for the next season. Anybody know when it will be on TV?
