| Orienteering race (Score-O) 43:50 [5]*** 4.38 km (10:00 / km) | ||

| First race with the Heart Rate Monitor. Geez, I can't believe how high my HR was during the race. 165~174 most of the time. I figured that when I was over 170 I was pushing too hard, but I generally felt good and didn't slow my pace much. Does everyone else's ticker go that fast during a race?
For those you o-geeks out there, I visited controls in the following order: 16, 10, 2, 3, 4, 9, 11, 5, 14, 15, 6, 18, 17, 24, 25. Scored 150 points in time 43:50. At my speed, skipping 12 seemed like a good idea. With hindsight, I am not so sure. I hope they put the score-o course up on the RouteGadget. I would love to see the routes that some of you guys ran. I keep improving. Training works, guys. I suppose I am lucky to be just starting out, and able to see steady improvement with every race. I don't look forward to the dreaded, and inevitable, performance plateau. The event was fun as always. Thanks MNOC!

| On Sand Dunes:
Last weekend I repeated the red course from the last MNOC meet at Sand Dunes State Forest. What a mistake! I chose to drive all the way out there because I had a day unencumbered with family and I wanted to train my navigational skills. I was looking for a challenge and Sand Dunes is the most challenging map I have run on so far. The last meet was in April and what a difference one month makes! There was some poison ivy visible in April, but now the park is completely covered with it, and in places it is over three feet tall! Briar patches that were passable in April are now impassible because they are fully leafed out. I would not have thought that leaves would make that much difference when you are pushing a spiky branch out of the way, but it intensifies the tangling. And the visibility, while generally good last April was down to a few feet in many places. I worked my way into a few places were I just had to reverse my way out of the underbrush, because it was impassable. The MNOC schedule must have been set with some wisdom to have held the Sand Dunes meet early in the year. Good job on the schedule, MNOC.
