Road Bike (Commute) 1:06:00 [3]21.3 mi (3:06 / mi) +50m 1:55 / km
rhr:42 slept:6.0 weight:166lbs
East Lake with Lakemont CC. Easy ride in and felt fine.
Road Bike (Commute) 1:26:00 [2]25.0 mi (3:25 / mi) +170m 2:06 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Got rained on. Nasty crash on Tiger Summit jammed up Issaquah and all surrounding areas. Luckily I had the bike and zipped through all the mad drivers stuck in the cars - oh the joy of no handed on the hard shoulder drinking my water laughing at the "lazy folk". Nearly got cut up by a big truck crossing 2 lanes trying to miss the traffic jam, life flashed in front of me pretty quick there...

My car is still in Issaquah as I biked up the hill.

Thursday Aug 30

Road Bike (Commute) 28:00 [2]8.5 mi (3:17 / mi) +20m 2:02 / km
slept:6.0 weight:165lbs shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Redmond to work, I slept in. Easy pace.
Racquetball 35:00 [3]
I won 2-1 vs Bill. Gave a mercy game in 3rd as I was shot! Totally whooped.
Road Bike (Commute) 28:00 [2]8.4 mi (3:19 / mi) +20m 2:03 / km

Back to Redmond, tired although I did burn off some hanger on dude.

Wednesday Aug 29

Road Bike (Commute) 1:10:00 [4]21.2 mi (3:17 / mi) +50m 2:02 / km
rhr:42 slept:6.0 weight:165lbs shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
East Lake. Missed Lakemont CC by 1 min and bust my ass to try catch up. Got 30 sec back but gave up after 5 miles, I was whooped. Cruised slow the rest of way to work.
Road Bike (Commute) 1:10:00 [3]21.2 mi (3:17 / mi) +50m 2:02 / km

East Lake Home, hot around 90F.
Hike 3:20:00 [3]9.2 mi (21:43 / mi) +1100m 9:51 / km
shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Lovely hike up McLennan Butte with Matt, Julie and AV. I had the "Rainier pack" on which was super heavy so hiked as fast as possible with poles on way up. Great views.

AV struggled a bit on the way down but fair play to the lad for knocking off his 1st big hike since the leg break. It will only get easier for him.

1:40 up ; 1:40 down wierd!

Comparison from 2005 when I ran with only water.
1:30 up ; 1:10 down

Tuesday Aug 28

Road Bike (Commute) 59:40 [2]18.2 mi (3:16 / mi) +50m 2:01 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
West Lake. Very slooow today, legs tired. My legs also hurt from Tiger Mtn on Sunday. I ran the MAR for nearly 4 days with 60+K feet gain with no leg aches and I run Tiger (fast it must be said) and cease up - wierd...
C • endorphines are great aren't t... 1
Road Bike (Commute) 51:20 [4]18.2 mi (2:48 / mi) +50m 1:44 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Bombed along West lake at a rate of knots. Hit a hole and heard a really nasty crack, couldn't find anything so hoping it was just the saddle bag not frame, I was going 27 mph at the time.

Monday Aug 27

Road Bike (Commute) 1:16:00 [4]25.6 mi (2:58 / mi) +80m 1:50 / km
slept:6.25 weight:167lbs shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
East lake + bit extra with Lakemont. Felt great again this morning and kept saying not to go too hard at the front of paceline. What happens, went too hard again and its only Monday too so a long week ahead of tired legs!
Gym 35:00 [2]
20 mins upper body weights, low weight high rep. 15 mins kayak trainer.
Road Bike (Commute) 57:50 [4]19.2 mi (3:00 / mi) +50m 1:51 / km
West Lake home.

Sunday Aug 26

Trail Run 1:45:00 [4]10.0 mi (10:29 / mi) +760m 5:17 / km
shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Issaquah High school to Tiger #3. Legs felt like a bull today, I think I accidently peaked! Ran really hard up and down and felt fine both ways. Even had good speed on the flat. Must be the lay off recently.

Achilles giving a bit of gripe going up.

Friday Aug 24

Hike 3:50:00 [1]6.6 mi (34:50 / mi) +250m 19:22 / km
shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Lovely hike from Sunrise at Mt Rainier Natl Park with Tanya (and Lewis in the backpack). Beautiful day and its our 6 yr aniversary today, great way to bunk off work! Views of Rainier were outstanding and we saw a mummy bear and cub, from about 400 yrds away so OK.

Thursday Aug 23

Road run (Commute) 1:20:00 [2]8.2 mi (9:45 / mi) +20m 6:01 / km
rhr:42 slept:6.0 weight:168lbs shoes: Brooks Glycerin #1
Forced myself to do this. Had to have a snooze in car just prior to running and my left achilles was hurting last night and this morning. No problems with running, except that the speed was super slow. I can feel it a bit not but I'm biking home.
C • rest? 2
Mountain Bike (Commute) 28:00 [5]8.2 mi (3:24 / mi) +0m 2:07 / km
Back to Redmond tailing some roadies, flat out hard going since my MTB is slow.

slept:5.5 weight:165lbs shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
East Lake with Lakemont CC. Had to play catch-up straight out of the blocks which was really hard, must be on time..
Note
Went for a run at lunch but gave up after 5 mins, just felt really tired. I never get enough sleep!
Road Bike (Commute) 1:03:00 [3]21.2 mi (2:58 / mi) +50m 1:50 / km

Super tired journey home but fast enough.

Tuesday Aug 21

rhr:42 slept:6.0 weight:165lbs
Was going to bike in today but brought my Rocky Mtn to work for some guy to view. He phoned at 6:30am at work to say he couldn't do it today, tomorrow instead. That bums me since I just wasted a perfectly good bike commute opportunity.

Bit sore after yesterdays running but not too bad, I'll hit the gym at lunchtime.

Monday Aug 20

Trail Run (Commute) 1:22:00 [3]10.0 mi (8:12 / mi) +20m 5:04 / km
rhr:42 slept:6.5 weight:166lbs shoes: Brooks Cascadia #1
Finally ran to work, albeit from Redmond. Full AR pack slowed me down a bit so I just plodded. Fairly chucking it down again this morning so had the jacket over the bag so I wouldn't be sitting here soaking wet. Ran on the bridle trail as much as possible for pavement for last 2 miles.

Still got to run back but will have no pack for the return journey.
Trail Run (Commute) 1:25:00 [3]10.0 mi (8:30 / mi) +20m 5:15 / km
shoes: Brooks Glycerin #1
Legs were tired but overall not too painful. Bag much lighter on the way home but I was tired.

Sunday Aug 19

Trail Run hills 2:10:00 [3]14.0 mi (9:16 / mi) +600m 5:06 / km
rhr:42 slept:5.5 weight:166lbs shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Cougar trail with SRC. 1st trail run since MAR and legs were really heavy. Actually picked up for 2nd half and felt fine throughout. Pissed rain and really heavy at finish.

Saturday Aug 18

Hike 45:00 [1]3.5 mi (12:50 / mi) +0m 7:59 / km
With Lewis and Tanya. Carried him on the way out, weight 38 inc pack and he walked back which was great. Must be the furthest he ever walked and never complained once - good man!

Friday Aug 17

Road Bike (Commute) 1:07:06 [4]22.85 mi (2:55 / mi) +50m 1:49 / km
rhr:42 slept:7.0 weight:165lbs shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Slept in 2 hrs until 6:45, lovely! Bike to work was actually warm as a result and another 20+ mph commute after taking it easy along the lake I pegged the smooth sections of the river trail.
C • what up?? 2
Road Bike 1:08:30 [3]22.5 mi (3:03 / mi) +50m 1:53 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Bumped into the guy I bought the bike from and had a chat. Headwind for 1st part meant 1st sub 20mph for a while, I gave that the jinx earlier. FLew along East lake in paceline with yer man though, good stuff.

Thursday Aug 16

Note
(rest day)
Nothing day today although had planned for riding the bike and running at lunch but totally knacked. Big toenail finally came off and hurt like hell so no run either. Ate tons....

Wednesday Aug 15

Road Bike 59:00 [3]20.3 mi (2:53 / mi) +70m 1:47 / km
rhr:42 slept:5.5 weight:165lbs shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Eastlake with lakemont CC. Got pulled the whole way, nice!

Last 5-6 commutes each way have been over 20mph, must be this bike is faster than the old Bianchi.
Swim 40:00 [3]
Swim at the Y. I suck at swimming but at least I'm trying a bit right now!
Road Bike (Commute) 1:05:00 [3]22.1 mi (2:57 / mi) +50m 1:49 / km

East lake - near 90F. Got stung by yellow yacket for 3rd time this year, 12 in the last 12 months. Thats 12 more than I had in the previous 24 years!!

Road Bike (Commute) 58:50 [3]18.21 mi (3:13 / mi) +50m 1:59 / km
rhr:42 slept:6.0 weight:165lbs
West Lake, got pretty cold along the Slough. Much slower this morning.
Racquetball 40:00 [3]
Against Bill. Bit faster than I thought I would be but still lost 1st game. Put the hurt on in the 2nd then caught him good with the racquet in the 3rd for a TKO. He got too close behind me so I didn't see him.
Road Bike (Commute) 53:00 [4]18.2 mi (2:55 / mi) +50m 1:48 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Bombed home althoguh slow quite a bit on the bumpy sections, can't be arsed fixing spokes again. Beautiful out.

rhr:42 slept:7.0 weight:166lbs shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Rode in with Lakemont on East lake. Blasted in and pulled for about 2 miles at c. 28mph. Didn't realise I was going so fast until I started siezing up a bit. I had the intention of going so hard I'd be sick but didn't manage. BBQ at the house last night meant a ton of GOOD food, 4 beers and a marqueritta so I was suprised nothing came up! Always told Glenn I had a strong stomach!
Road run 40:00 [1]4.5 mi (8:52 / mi) +20m 5:27 / km
shoes: Brooks Glycerin #1
That was possibly the slowest I have ever run (apart from MAR!). 1st run since Montana and my legs were super heavy with no fizz at all. Possibly the really fast bike this morning and the food and beer yesterday played a part but most likely it cos I'm still shot!
Road Bike (Commute) 59:00 [3]21.0 mi (2:48 / mi) +50m 1:44 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Nice tailwind once I got going, good speed all the way home and warm too.

Friday Aug 10

rhr:42 slept:6.0 weight:165lbs shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Part way with Lakemont BC. Legs feeling much better today but still not springy, but at least they feel like they are screwed on now. East lake.
Swim 40:00 [2]
At the Y. Two swims in a week, must be a new record for me. Used the flippers for a bit to stop the shoulder getting too sore, holding up well at the moment and no grief from it under normal motions.
Road Bike (Commute) 1:05:30 [3]21.6 mi (3:01 / mi) +50m 1:52 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
East Lake, legs feeling almost normal again. Big toenail hanging off now, yuk!

Thursday Aug 9

Note

Ball-bagged, can't get enough sleep and am waking up with no energy. I need a 10 hr sleep but don't know where to find one...result is a drive to work and most likely nothing at lunchtime except maybe a snooze.

Slept loads last night as I crashed at 8pm. Feeling really tired this morning so I must still be in sleep deficit.
Swim 30:00 [2]
Swim at the Y. First one in months since I hurt my shoulder in Hawaii in April. Felt quite nice really and a good change from being on my feet for days. No shoulder issues either.
Road Bike (Commute) 40:00 [2]11.0 mi (3:38 / mi) +50m 2:14 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Work to Rog's via a steep hill near work.

Road Bike (Commute) 35:00 [1]9.5 mi (3:40 / mi) +20m 2:16 / km
rhr:40 slept:8.0 weight:164lbs shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Roger's house to my work, very easy pace and 1st time on the road bike in a month. Toe and ass still sore, esp. big toe. May be time to go to the doc.
Gym 30:00 [1]
5 mins kayak trainer, rest upper body weights. Freakin hard going and had zip energy or motivation.
Road Bike (Commute) 31:00 [2]8.9 mi (3:29 / mi) +20m 2:09 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Easy ride back to Rog's from work, nasty headwind though.

Sunday Aug 5

Note
rhr:42 slept:9.0 weight:163lbs (injured) (rest day)
Rested today after the MAR. Ass hurts like crazy and feet are tingling. Big tonail is black and oozing pus, yuk! Slept like a log last night and doing jack today. Tanya is feeding me some great food again after the bars and junk I ate throughout the race. (Not included in this statement is the food from the support crew which was great and tasted super!)

Not doing another race like this for a while but I was determined to finish this one at any cost to the body.

PQ may be at this location next year - you have been warned, it is hard...

Weight is low and my body fat reading nearly 20% so the machine must be confused since I am damn skinny and marginally ripped right now after the last few days.
C • Well done and welcome back! 10

Saturday Aug 4

Mountain Bike race 30:00 [5]7.0 mi (4:17 / mi) +300m 2:21 / km
slept:0.0 shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Busted my ass after a sudden surge in energy, maybe it was the chicken bits? Actaully towed for the 1st time in days after Matt and Glenn had towed my ass a lot over for 1.5 days. Tried to catch up with Go-lite and made it at the entrance to the finish. They were about 15 sec ahead and VERY KINDLY WAITED FOR US and BOTH TEAMS CROSSED THE FINISH LINE TOGETHER. Joint 1st place, except we were unranked so obviously didn't count. Totally shot.
Note
Expedition Race Recap:

Unsure of lengths and times - guestimates until I see the map for sure. Approx 275 miles and unknown elevation, it was a bunch.

Lessons:

Shoes - bring a pair 1 size too big for MTB and trek when feet swell up.
Hat - Wide brimmed essential - my good!
Pills - Ibuprofen and Caffeine are your friends, use as required.
Tow - don't bust a gut early or it will hurt
Bike seat - plush and comfy over weight any day
Water - bring way more than you need in MT and fill up often when possible
Food - anything other than bars is a treat - my tounge is raw.

Bunch of other stuff but I'm too knacked to think about it right now.

Kayak 4:30:00 [2]20.0 mi (13:29 / mi)
slept:6.0
Felt like a million dollars after the horrible time I had after trek. This section should have been mandatory duckies instead we we assured that necky amaruks were suitable. My arse they were, this was a class II / III river with tight turns and low rocks. Knocked Rogers boat quite a bit which I was really upset abouit doing. Glenn and Sarah (his daughter subbing for Julie in the kayak) rolled and bailed once and gave themselves a bit of a shock.

We then capsized about 1 hr later in a really tricky section and the boat got pinned on a rock. Paddles went down stream but Glenn got them thankfully. I was under for a bit but got out OK, bit of a fright and my watch stopped working at exactly that point, 09:28! Got the boat of the rock and carried on. Never though it was possible to roll a Necky, just shows the extremes required. Wrong tools for the job and I blame the race directors for this. Like steering a Hummer down Icicle Ridge singletrack, nigh on impossible.

All said though it was a blast and finished off with a nice rappel after portaging the kayaks for a short distance. Due to low water the rest of the kayak section was cancelled so we got moved forward a few miles thank god.
Mountain Bike race 12:30:00 [4]75.0 mi (10:00 / mi) +2500m 5:38 / km
slept:6.0 shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Really hard MTB section with some none existent singletrack with some super hard bike whack and hike a bike, The burn was in full effect and my feet were busting and ASS was rawer than a steak tartare. Couldn't sit for more than 30 sec due to the Ritchey WCS seat's lack of cushioning, this will be #1 lesson of expidition race. The whole duration with Go-lite timberland to and fro and we finally shook them on the technical singletrack out of cottonwood canyon. Glenn and Matt binned a few good crashes here and I went over the bars 3 times in 1 hr from being really tired. Enjoyed the singletrack except for the thunderstorm rain that passed through. Really wanted the race to end now. What I found strange was after Glenn basting me to finish fast on the mega trek and busting my ass, he now started to faff around as if he wanted Timberland to finish ahead, Matt was kind of the same which I found wierd since we had busted guts to get to where we were for no apparant reason. Stopped in Arbys for iced tea and chicken bits and gave the lead back to Timberland (they were ranked though unlike us).

Thursday Aug 2

Trail Run race 17:00:00 [2]40.0 mi (25:30 / mi) +3000m 12:51 / km
slept:0.0 shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
The hardest trek of my life due to the extreme pain in my feet. Trek was around 10K ft for 25 miles and my fingers and feet swole up beyond fat suit size, really uncomfortable. Views were astounding on the ridge looking to Yellowstone and over the whole ridge we were on. The 1st 5 hrs were in dark with a full moon and we could see without headlamps, one of the coolest AR things I've done. Full on bear spray but never saw any. The ridge went on for hours and seemed never ending. I had comtemplated quiting before this but got strapped into it by Glenn who did a great job on my feet after numerous attempts had failed with blister pads. Glenn was strong on this leg and 95% of the race. The last part from Windy pass onwards floored me. I have dreamt this before a few months ago and it was wierd seeing this and knowing how the end of this trek was to play out. Matt and I both had bad doses of SLEEPMONSTERS seeing all kinds of wierd stuff. At the end of trek I did some chores then went to lie down. Before this could happen I collapsed and went into full meltdown crying my eyes out for some reason I don't remember. Couldn't sit or stand without falling over and also couldn't speak - like I had had 15 pints of the good stuff. Had 2 hrs nap thanks to support crew sticking me in my sleeping bag then we missed the dark zone cut off so thankfully I got a good nights rest.

Wednesday Aug 1

Mountain Bike race 8:00:00 [4]18.0 mi (26:39 / mi) +1000m 14:08 / km
slept:0.0 shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Continuation of MTB leg with a really nasty hike-a-bike section. All at night but actually quite nice. Still strong and towed like a bull (stupidly).
Trail Run 8:00:00 [3]15.0 mi (31:59 / mi) +2500m 13:06 / km
slept:0.25 shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
2nd Hike looked like a 4hr on paper but was actually really hard going and I was starting to suffer. Julie and Matt both hurting too, Matt with stomach and Julie wanting to quit. Beautiful scenery and mountain bowls but way longer than we thought. My feet started to blister on heel and big toenail starting to go black and mushy. Balls of feet hurting like sh1t on the way down.
Mountain Bike race 3:45:00 [4]20.0 mi (11:14 / mi) +1000m 6:03 / km
slept:0.0 shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Easiest stage of the race but I was hurting after towing Julie on the previous stage. Managed the 1st part OK but Matt had to tow my ass back to TA big time. He was moving fast again thank god. Bomber single track made things fun again. Julie had quit before this stage so we were unranked but continuing with the aim to finish in the same maner as is we were racing.
Mountain Bike race 30:00 [3]5.0 mi (6:00 / mi)
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Quick spin to the start of the MEGA hike section.
Trail Run race 3:00:00 [3]1.25 mi (2:23:58 / mi) +200m 59:46 / km
shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Start of the mega hike from Hyalite to Windy Pass to Porcupine Ridge.
