Event: 4th Dimension 24h Adventure Race

Kayak race 3:20:00 [3]16.0 mi (12:29 / mi)
1st Leg of 4thDAR 24 hr race. Not a great start by us and we were down a bit from the start but had a steady enough paddle and were probably 20 mins down on DART / MerGeo 2 person.
Mountain Bike race 13:00:00 [3]55.0 mi (14:11 / mi) +2200m 7:50 / km
shoes: Pearl Izumi Vagabond
Guestimates on distances etc. Hard MTB leg had us out for most of the day. Tough hike a bike where I got stung 3 times AGAIN!! Lots of fireroad afterwards. Got pretty cold in the evening as it was misty all day. THere are views but we couldn't see any. Matt Nav'd well on this. We did a bit of bike-whack but changed that plan which was the best plan. Thought we were well over an hour behind DART but they made a couple Nav errors which brought us right back in touch. Some tricky to find controls but were just went steady and true for the most part.

Mechanicals caused me a load of grief:

Broken chain - <5min fix

Top 4 granny gears on cassette are screwed and broke my new chain, should have replaced the cassette at the same time - stupid

Cleat fell on my bike shoe, this could have been a disaster but it was during the hike-a-bike. Lucked out when Frenchie's team found it, talk about a needle in a haystack!
Kayak race 45:00 [3]3.0 mi (14:59 / mi)
Short night spin in the kayak. We were about 15mins down at this point and we actually fancied our chances since were are strong on the foot section.

Friday Sep 14

Note
rhr:42 slept:6.5 weight:168lbs (rest day)
Rest before the 24hr. Think I may have hiked a bit much this week but I should be fine by tomorrow.

Thursday Sep 13

Hike 43:00 [4]2.5 mi (17:11 / mi) +500m 6:36 / km
shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Hiked the backpack up to Poo-Poo pt South Launch.
Paragliding 25:00 [0]
Windy so I took a tandem flight when I probably could have gone solo. Still we did some nice ridge flying just above the trees and I controled for a bit too.

Wednesday Sep 12

Hike 34:00 [4]2.5 mi (13:35 / mi) +520m 5:08 / km
shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Blazed up the trail with the paraglider pack on. 45lb pack and made it up 9mins slower than my best running time. Still a few minutes in me yet if I really put a spurt on.
Paragliding (Solo #2) 10:00 [0]
Yehaw! Front launch failed once then a good reverse launch to get me off the hill. Nice flight down, got a bit crowded at landing but I nailed it and made a perfect tippy toe landing. Great stuff!

Tuesday Sep 11

Road run 38:00 [1]4.5 mi (8:26 / mi) +50m 5:04 / km
rhr:42 slept:6.5 weight:166lbs shoes: Brooks Glycerin #1
Run with Eric from work down to Bothell and back. Hot and slow pace.
Hike 40:00 [4]2.5 mi (16:00 / mi) +520m 6:02 / km
shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Fast hike up Poo-Poo with 50lb paraglider pack. Hung around and madewhat can only be described as a freaking F@#k up of the launch. Lost the balls and never really committed. Winds were so light which I'm not used to. Helped get the last few off the hill just as light dropped. At least I'm not still stuck up a tree like one of the other guys, who is on local news right now!
Trail Run 20:00 [3]2.5 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Run down with 50lb from Poo-Poo. Really dark and not ideal with such a big pack on.

Monday Sep 10

Swim 30:00 [2]0.75 mi (39:59 / mi)
Swim at Y as too hot for run.
Kiting 1:00:00 [1]
Kited around at beach on Lake Sambo. Hard work cos I'm still naff!
Kayak 1:30:00 [3]6.5 mi (13:50 / mi)
Kayak on Lake Sambo after flying. Bit choppy with the wind and boats out but I love this time of day, the light is fantastic and the place is so beautiful.
Swim warm up/down 10:00 [1]0.25 mi (40:02 / mi)
Cool down swim after kayak - lovely jubbly.

Sunday Sep 9

Hike 46:00 [3]2.5 mi (18:24 / mi) +520m 6:57 / km
shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Hike up to Poo-Poo Pt for my 1st sole paraglide.
Paragliding 30:00 [2]
Woo-hoo, 1st solo paraglide. Way less than ideal conditions. I made 7 attempts in no wind with number 2 requiring extrication from some jungle bushes. Even AR bushes are not that thick and all the lines got knotted. 20 mins getting out of that before trying again. Wind really picked up quickly and people started to go but a load bailed. I was told to get going. Launch was easy actually, hardly any run involved. Got buffeted around in the air and hardly any maneuvers. Good approach to LZ but I drifted a bit right and got a wing collapse from the trees. Took a nose dive into the tree whcih caught my right tip but I landed a bit hard but OK. The guy behind ended up in the marsh way short of LZ due to high wind speed. No more solo's came down so I was the guinnea pig...

A ton of fun and I was bricking it, great views though.
Hike 1:20:00 [2]5.0 mi (15:59 / mi) +520m 7:31 / km
shoes: Montrail Continental Divide#1
Hike back up Poo-Poo for tandem since the wing was up there. Another tandem went out before and had a wing 1/3 wing colapse so we learned lesson #2 - good judgement and I had to hike down without flying. Still I had a great day, and lived to tell the tale which is the important part.
Swim 20:00 [1]0.5 mi (39:59 / mi)
Kited the paraglider at Lake Sammamish park then had a swim afterwards. Aboslutely lovely and really refreshing.
