Wednesday Aug 29

Inclined Treadmill (CLaM) 1:13:40 [5] 4.86 mi (15:09 / mi)
max:180 slept:8.0 weight:194lbs shoes: Asics GT2120

679 calories = 4.01 miles / 60:40 / incline = 6.0 / speed = 4.0

+

121 calories = 0.85 miles / 13:00 / incline = 4.0 / speed = 4.0

=

800 calories = 4.86 miles / 73:40

That first hour was pretty darn tough for the last 10 minutes and my heart rate spiked up to 180 (yowch). I'll keep training at 6.0/4.0 for at least another week before attempting to step the incline up another level.

Off to the Hamptons tomorrow, so will try to hit the beaches for a few very fast paced early morning walks. And will attempt to avoid massive instances of gluttony (focusing on the mini instances of gluttony instead).

Tuesday Aug 28

Inclined Treadmill (CLaM) 1:00:00 [3] 3.98 mi (15:04 / mi)
rhr:76 slept:8.0 weight:194lbs shoes: Asics GT2120

Decided to take it easy tonight after last night's brutal session and limit the workout to 1 hour tonight. I can kinda feel my old planar fasciitis after about 40 minutes on the treadmill, and really felt it last night after 2 hours. So today I decided to lower risk of injury and give my heel more time to heal (God I love using homonyms).

610 calories / 60 minutes / 3.98 miles / speed = 4.0 / incline = 4.5

Emmy did well too and is looking more fit on the treadmill.

Will try to get in one more session this week tomorrow night before our jaunt to the Hamptons on Thursday where there will be excessive eating and boozing...

Monday Aug 27

Inclined Treadmill (CLaM) 2:06:00 [4] 8.41 mi (14:59 / mi)
rhr:76 slept:8.0 weight:194lbs shoes: Asics GT2120

Very long hard workout tonight in 3 stages:

1). 601 calories = 3.98 miles, 60:00 minutes, speed = 4.0 / incline = 4.5

2). 601 calories = 3.99 miles, 60:00 minutes, speed = 4.0 / incline = 4.5

3). 54 calories = 0.44 miles, 6:00 minutes
3:00 minutes at speed = 3.0 / incline = 0.0
1:15 minutes at speed = 10.0 / incline = 0.0 (SPRINT)
1:45 minutes at speed = 3.0 / incline = 0.0

The sprint after 2 hours was exceptionally tough, even if it was only 75 seconds at a 6 minute mile pace.

Totals = 1,256 calories, 8.41 miles, and 2 hours 6 minutes. Yowza !!!

Emmy did 2 solid hours too, albeit at a relatively slow speed and low incline, but it show much improved endurance.

Sunday Aug 26

Walking/Running (Valley Forge Loop) 1:30:00 [3] 5.0 mi (17:59 / mi)
rhr:68 slept:8.0 weight:194lbs shoes: Asics GT2120
Walked VF Park Loop with Emmy. Jogged some. Did some uphill sprints. Finished at Visitors' Center with a long uphill sprint. Emmy felt badly at first but improved the whole way. Will try another run with her tonight.

Saturday Aug 25

Treadmill + Eliptical (at SkyTop Lodge) 1:10:00 [4]
rhr:72 slept:9.0 weight:193lbs shoes: Asics GT2120

Celebrating Mom's 65th Birthday at Skytop Lodge.

Slow walk to Indian Ladder Falls with family in AM and brisk walk back with Emmy after picnic lunch. Probably 4 miles total.

Then hit the exercise room and worked out on the primative treadmill, the junky eliptical trainer, and the archaic reclined bicycle.

Did 70 minutes in full and probably burned 700 calories.

Did a short afternoon walk.

Pants are getting obviously loose = waist is shrinking.

Hoping to finish August at 190 pounds if possible, but looking at a brutal work week and then Friday <-> Monday in the Hamptons = little time for workouts and multiple large yummy meals. Will be a challenging month end.

Wednesday Aug 22

Inclined Treadmill (CLaM) 45:00 [5] 3.0 mi (14:59 / mi)
max:170 slept:8.0 weight:193lbs shoes: Asics GT2120
Did 30 minutes at 4.0 speed and 6.5 incline
Then 11 minutes at 4.0 speed and 0.0 incline (to cool down and rest a bit)
Then 1.0 minutes at 10.0 speed and 0.0 inclind (6 min. mile pace)
Then 3 minutes at 4.0 speed and 0.0 incline to warm down.

Burned 452 calories. Emmy did well too.

Down to 193 pounds.

Slower night, but still easing back into things post-vacation...

Tuesday Aug 21

Inclined Treadmill (CLaM) 45 [5] 3.0 mi (14 / mi)
max:175 rhr:72 slept:8.0 weight:174lbs shoes: Asics GT2120
40 minutes on speed = 4.0; incline = 6.5. Fairly rigorous workout after a long break for vacation, but feeling trim and fit.

Hit a wall about 40 minutes in and did last 5 minutes as a warm down on incline = 0.0.

Managed to generate exercised induced urticaria (aka hives) again, probably food related. Web suggests common triggers are asprin, NSAIDs, wheat, seafood. My variant is definitely: cholinergic urticaria.

"Patients should be educated to (1) abstain from exercise four to six hours after eating; (2) avoid aspirin and NSAIDs before exercising; (3) refrain from exercise around menses; (4) cease exercise and self-administer subcutaneous epinephrine at the first indication of pruritus or flushing and (5) seek medical assistance if symptoms progress."

I did eat and then rush out right away to exercise. Dinner included pasta with shrimp and a rosemary chicken. Could have been the shrimp? Avoiding exercise for 4 to 6 hours after eating will be impossible. Avoiding exercise around menses will be comparatively simpler...

Further details are here: http://www.aafp.org/afp/20011015/1367.html I'm already taking a Claratin generic, so that apparently doesn't help much.

Probably time to invest in an EpiPen just in case I need it one day.

Saturday Aug 18

Walking/Running hills (Tuscany !!!!) 14:00:00 [1]
weight:195lbs
Logging 14 hours of walking in Tuscany.

Actually walked much more...but wha' EV ah...

Somehow managed to lose a little weight in Italy....will keep that trend going.

Wednesday Aug 8

Inclined Treadmill (CLaM) 1:02:30 [4] 4.1 mi (15:14 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:197lbs shoes: Asics GT2120
Did treadmill at speed = 4.0 and incline = 6.0.

Felt pretty good and that I could go up a half level to 6.5.

Did an extra 2.5 minutes warmdown.

Total calories burned = 710, which is not too bad for 62.5 minutes.

After plateauing at 200 lbs for a while, I'm seeing a few more lbs drop off. I'm officially down to 197 lbs, which means I have 17 to go (or 22 more if I want to be very aggressive).

Off to Italy in 48 hours, so if I can manage to stay even for my return on the 18th, I should be in OK shape to hit 195 for the end of August, which is my interim goal. (190 EOM September; 185 EOM October, 180 EMO November, and 175 EOM December).

That should put me in good shape for the half-marathon in December.

Plus Eric wants to bet me $10,000 that I can't stay below 180 in 2008. I think I will take that bet if I win this one. WHEN I win this one....
C • Would you like to syndicate that bet? 1

Sunday Aug 5

Orienteering race (Mount Penn) 1:03:00 [4]
weight:199lbs shoes: Asics GT2120
Lousy time. Georgie and I couldn't find #3 and #8. Fairly tough for a yellow. More details after the DVOA site posts the results. No doubt we did terribly.
