C • good plan 2
running 45:00 [3]
Easy run with Ian and Niall. Was only going to do 30mins but it didnt take much persuasion to do the whole route. Across Becketts into Meanwood and back.

Well ive decided on my training plan and its to do very little training to allow myself to recover somewhat from my recent exertions. Lots of sleep, rest and maybe a bit of easy running.

Monday Aug 27

orienteering 40:00 [4]
White Rose relay in a non-comp team. Had a very nice amble around the forest not pushing particulary hard as we were non-comp. Stopped to get a thorn out of my toe and just generally minced around enjoying myself. Back was aching a bit from all the bending down and crawling under the eye-poking-arm-scratching trees that are so numerous in this part of the world.
running 10:00 [2]
orienteering 28:00 [2]
Collected some controls for the nice EBOR people. By eck im reet knackered. I'll have to have a think about what training i should do over the next 1.5 weeks.

Sunday Aug 26

orienteering race 1:13:00 [4]
White Rose day 2. Had a scrappier run and made a couple of silly mistakes including missing one in a clearing which i must have been about 5 metres from but just couldnt see it in all the crap that was on the floor. Felt a lot tireder and wasnt able to give it as much power as i wanted to. Ian did a stonking time which i should have been a few mins closer too but hes running really strongly at the moment.
running 20:00 [2]
blah blah

Saturday Aug 25

orienteering race 1:04:00 [5]
White Rose. Had a cleanish run around some very tough forest. Missed slightly at the end of the long leg but when i checked this again on Monday it confirmed my suspicions that the features are about 30 metres out from whats shown on the map. Pushed hard and felt like i might explode in the heat and was nearly sick at the end.
running 20:00 [2]
Warm up and a slow jog to warm down.

Added some lunges+squats and things to the usual workout but not convinced about their benefits, surely running up+down hills is far more beneficial?

Thursday Aug 23

orienteering 1:00:00 [3]
Went to Esthwaite Intake for some training as its one of the only bracken free areas (that i know of). Lost time in a couple of places and struggled to get any flow as found it quite rough going (and was getting a bit fed up with trees trying to poke my eyes out, perhaps living in Yorkshire for the last 6 months has turned me into a wimp?) but then it clicked and all was good for about an hour till i hit a brackeny area and lost interest, luckily this was right at the end. Dont know what all the southerners are moaning about the weather for, its beautiful sunshine!
orienteering 30:00 [4]
Tempo section in the middle of the session. Overall felt a lot better than i have done recently but felt a bit funny afterwards, probably due to the heat.

Tuesday Aug 21

orienteering 47:00 [3]
I'll put this in as orienteering but in reality i went to recce the area where the FRA relays are this year but with a 1:25 000 map. Ive run there about 1000 times previously but not usually with a map. Checked out some potential control sites but it was all pure guesswork, i dont have any inside info or anything. I think the orienteers will have even more of an advantage this year as it depends how they plan it but there could be some cracking route choice decisions to make as well as running on bearings across nothingness trying to hit streams and things (not easy when theres alot more on the ground than on the map) and potentially alot of terrain running. Its very very steep in places too.
orienteering 23:00 [5]
Did 60x30x15 whilst orienteering. Still pretty knackered so no decent speed really.

Monday Aug 20

Free weights-core stability 40:00 [2]
I really am quite tired but then i have had 2 weeks of decent training. Think i might rest a bit this week. Also i need more time to achieve my aim of re-reading all the Harry Potter books this holiday. I believe this is a useful use of my time.

Sunday Aug 19

running 1:00:00 [2]
Gentle run around Kinver Edge as we were bored with the usual training places. Was nice exploring somewhere new even if the woods off the paths were chocked with brambles or deep bracken. Would have been some glorious views but unfortunately it was raining again.
running 32:00 [3]
Bit of a quicker paced run on my own following on from the previous hour, found a cool sandstone reef in the middle of the forest with a cave under it. Feeling bit tired still.
Free weights-core stability 30:00 [2]
Ive realised ive done a bit more training this week than i meant to, i guess thats the effect being on holiday has.

Saturday Aug 18

running 34:00 [2]
warm up and warm down in the rain, ffs its supposed to be summer!
running 28:00 [4]
Bit of a tempo run where we defined a loop then chased eachother around it. Hilly and through some interesting woodland. Felt a bit physically below standard.

Friday Aug 17

cycling 1:05:00 [2]
Ive never really thought of cycling as training before but i think after a few months of cycling 35-40 mins into uni and back everyday my legs feel a bit stronger for it (although it could of course be a number of other things) so i thought id keep up some biking during the summer hols. I figure if i keep an average hr of between 110-120 and cycle up lots of hills it should have some sort of training effect. Cycled past the Bournville chocolate factory and saw lots of workers out for lunch, sadly no oompa-loompers though. Maybe they're kept inside.
running 58:00 [3]
Saw a woman in a full religious head/body dress outfit rollerblading through the park.

Thursday Aug 16

Free weights-core stability 50:00 [2]
Ooh i can feel the benefits already.
orienteering 1:09:00 [2]
Bit of borienteering training in the Lickeys. Did a paired type exercise with one person leading one leg then swapping etc. Theres some well sweet parts of the forest. Wore shorts so have a very manly collection of cuts on my legs now, nice. Chicks dig scars, apparently.

Wednesday Aug 15

Free weights-core stability 30:00 [2]
One set of weights then some other exercises to build up my already incredibly muscular legs.
running 50:00 [1]
Gentle jog around some more mingy ming parks. Was rather sore after yesterdays weights session. Still feeling bit jaded after the scottish.

Tuesday Aug 14

Free weights-core stability 40:00 [2]
Frickin hell this was hard work.
running 1:01:00 [3]
There was a break in the rain so i went and licked some hills in the lickey hills. Ran as slow or fast as i felt like, so ended up running really quite slow.

Monday Aug 13

running 49:00 [3]
A gentle mince around some mingy birmingham parks. Still pretty tired but moving ok. Felt strange running in non-terrain and on the flat.

Saturday Aug 11

running 10:00 [3]
Warm up but couldnt be arsed warming down.
orienteering 1:13:00 [4]
Scottish Day 6. Set off across the deep heather to no.1 then realised the paths were much faster so for the rest of the course i stuck to those where possible (probably too much). Navigationally clean apart from no.9 where i missed it by a matter of metres and had to reattack it losing a couple of mins. Legs felt tired for the 1st time all week and i completely ran out of energy about 3 km from the end and slowed considerably therefore losing me time as well. Great area though. Overall it was an ok week with a couple of runs im really pleased with (Day 2 and 4). Just need to work on what i do when the leg isnt going quite how i planned ie relocation type stuff.

Friday Aug 10

running 20:00 [3]
orienteering 41:00 [5]
Scottish day 5. Went very cleanly through the 1st 10 controls although struggled across the open heathery bit between 4-5. Then didnt know where i was going along the indistinct path to 11 and misrelocated at the end of it so when tried to attack the control i was 20 metres off line so missed it and went back and tried again till i found it, losing about 2.30mins. Bloody annoying as was having such a good run and felt like was moving fairly well through the terrain.

Thursday Aug 9

running 15:00 [3]
orienteering 1:02:00 [5]
Scottish Day 4. Having finally got over the shock of having retired on day 3 i was looking foward to racing on such a good area. Had a late start but there was still a number of people starting around me chasing me down. Had a very clean run and felt pretty good physically so pushed it hard.

Tuesday Aug 7

running 10:00 [3]
orienteering 1:20:00 [4]
Scottish day 3. I was so looking foward to this and was full of confidence from the previous day and when i spiked the first control i thought i might be onto another good one but then i missed slightly at no.2 and again at no.4 when i found a control on a boulder slightly higher up the hill from mine which i couldnt believe wasnt the correct one. Then had a disaster at no.6 loosing about 20mins and also any belief in my navigational skills whatsoever. Thought id found my attackpoint of the small hill top adjacent to the reenterent the control was in and dropped into the feature only to find no control, hmm i thought, maybe its in the next reenterent. Only it wasnt. Or the next one. Or the next one etc. Had massive problems relocating and when i did i still couldnt find the bloody thing. It was like there was a dave-repelling-force-field around it or something. Eventually when i found it i couldnt face continuing lest i never return from the forest. I'll be back to finish it one day...

Monday Aug 6

running 30:00 [3]
Warming up then jogged back to the start to pick up my thermal which i'd left there as i thought it would be cold as i am a wimp.
orienteering 36:00 [5]
Scottish day 2. I usually start fairly cautiously in order to get into the map but about 10secs before the final beep i decided to go off hard and see what happened. Took a slightly longer but safer route to no.1 but got into a great rhythm which i kept thoughout the course and never really made any mistakes. The area suited me as it was intricate rocky type detail with lots of features and i absolutely nailed all the controls including hurdling straight over any fences that were in my way.

Sunday Aug 5

running 20:00 [3]
Warming up and down
orienteering 1:13:00 [5]
Scottish Day 1. Missed the first one by being on the wrong small hill top then Oli came past me at no.3 so i used him as an attackpoint into no. 4 but then by no.5 he'd disappeared. Went well through the rest of the controls except no.13 where i lost 3 mins as drifted too far down the hill and couldnt relocate. Hadnt seen the rides around the control which were hidden by the overprinting.

Thursday Aug 2

Free weights-core stability 20:00 [2]
running 33:00 [3]
Running up on to the moor and back with Niall.
orienteering 30:00 [3]
Technical training on Ilkley moor. Mostly very smooth. Fell in a marsh, which was nice.

Wednesday Aug 1

running 30:00 [3]
Easy run around Becketts. Legs felt like crap as i spent the afternoon playing golf so did loads of walking around. Turns out im a pretty talented golfer.
