Auld Lang Syne fell race. Was using this to get in an intense session which meant when the gun went i wasnt in race mode and forgot the cardinal rule of fell running which is to start off far too fast then just suck up the pain. Consequently, i started too slowly, got boxed in at the bottleneck cavalry charge type start and spent the first 2 miles trying to catch up all the time lost. Had a strong run after that and especially enjoyed the rougher bits of the course like the river crossings and the descent off the trig point. Had i not faffed at the start reckon i could have been 1min quicker. Lesson learned.

Steady on Nicky Nook. Usually its a pretty peopleless place but for some reason the world and his wife decided to descend on it today. It was rather irritating. A couple of St Bernards the size of ponies tried to stick their heads up my bum but apart from that it was fairly uneventful.

Warm up and then went down to have a look at the castle. Running through the centre of Lancaster in lycra was a bit odd.

Ran the sprint course from 2002 when the British sprint champs were in Williamson Park. The rain was torrential before and during meaning the ground was sodden with water forcing a slow pace off road and caution on the tarmac. A couple of times i had to switch routes and run a long way around cos i didnt fancy my chances getting down muddy slopes wearing trainers. Some of the controls i only waved at cos couldnt be arsed sliding all the way down the slope only to not be able to get up again. Good fun.

12 mins running to start of wolf fell. Finished the intervals in the wet peat bogs near the trig point on Fairsnape and ran back down the connecting spur to Parlick and the car.

1min on, 30 secs off x 20. Did the 1st 15 up Wolf fell so it was nice and steep, last 5 were on the flatish plateau that joins onto Fairsnape. For a change it was very wet, windy and the visibility was low. Felt really good though, much better than yesterday when i was a bit tired.

Control pick then middle course at Barrowfield. This used to be a gorgeous bit of intricate woodland until they felled most of it. Overall speed was low cos it was so rough but it was still possible to run over it all. The remaining bits were really nice and we did some head to head racing over the last few controls which was great fun.

Fairfield horseshoe starting from under Loughrigg. Was grumbling to myself on the initial climb about my overly heavy bumbag but by the top i was wearing everything i had in it including 2 jackets, 2 hats, waterproof gloves and double skinned tights. Blowing a bit of a gale with horizontal rain/hail adding to the pleasant conditions. Made good progress till the last 20mins of climb where the ground was covered by sheets of frozen snow and i had to slow considerably. Found what i thought was probably the top and headed off on a compass bearing along the ridge. After losing about 300m climb the cloud broke and the views across the south lakes were awesome.

Steady with my bro on Nicky Nook. Stopped to chat with some orienteers who were out for a walk.

Properly nailed it up both the major climbs, on the 1st one he was only 15 metres behind at the top but on the second, which was steeper and more about leg strength, i kicked his ass and was about 15 secs clear. Was getting a bit worried he was faster than me!

Test run to check how my body is: steady loop from Garstang across the fields, up the valley, over Nicky Nook and back. It feels as though my training has been suffering over the past month or whatever for various reasons but on the plus side my legs are rested, if a little lacking in speed at the moment.

Intervals was the plan for today but woke up feeling totally shite so went for an easy potter instead. I felt great all last week then suddenly once ive handed the work in i was stressing over its like an elastic band has snapped. Bugger. Royds hall looked good, will have to go there another time.

Up onto the moor in the freezing fog where i couldnt see a thing and everything was icey and shiny. Had a route in mind which for some reason i thought would take an hour but then i realised it was way short so tried to follow a route id only done once before with CVFR when i was chatting and paying no attention to the paths we took. Ended up at a junction where 3 bridleways split so took the wrong ones twice before finding the way.

Needed to go for a run, if only to stop any DVT developing from sitting down all day at a computer. Went over Nicky Nook up into the terrain on Harrisend fell, was great visibility with views across the Fylde/Irish sea and north towards the Lakes. Kept my girly hair hidden under a hat cos its was bloody freezing, all the ponds/marshes were frozen on the fell. A grouse exploded out of the heather at one point, nearly crapped myself.

Hill reps. 2 side of the top of a hill used, one being about 2.42mins and the other being about 3.52 in length. did 5 reps total. Fricking hard work on the long ones with the wind battering into the front/side. Felt good when wasnt getting blown over. Christmas songs are so annoying, except East17, which is brilliant.

'recovery' run with my brother. Out the back of the village, past the house where Darren Peacock (ex blackburn player with girly hair) used to live. Was meant to be at an easy pace but the speed got slowly increased with neither one of us wanting to back down so the last 5-10 mins were covered at a rapid tempo pace. Boys and their egos! Felt good and bouncy so didnt mind. HR was av 145 which is what it would have been for a much lower speed a couple of years ago, shows progress (hopefully).

Yay, some borienteering. Found a few Ilkley moor maps knocking around so went there on the way home to do some technique work. Control pick in the technical bit then up on to the plateau area. Pottered up to the trig point for some extra distance and for old times sake. Was running smoothly and navigating well. Wearing big thick gloves makes me feel out of touch with the map so i risked frostbite in my compass hand.

5mins on, 2mins off repeat 4 times. Round a couple of football pitches i discovered recently. Felt like i was struggling to move quickly but think its cos i was trying so hard and was wearing trainers on a soft surface so difficult to get purchase.

Sometimes its good just to go for an easy in run in good company, so i did. Midgley moor, heron wood, horsey field. Lots of fun to be had sliding on the icy puddles. Wore o shoes as my fell shoes have been rubbing me for no good reason.

3x some seconds over 5mins down the canal between 2 bridges which i think is about a mile. Just did 3 as feeling quite tired for some reason. Lack of sleep and too much work probably. Had to dodge an icy puddle every 5metres or so, could have been amusing if i had slipped and entered the freezing canal head first at speed.

Steady run on Parlick+Fairsnape. In contrast to yesterday it was brilliant weather and i rather enjoyed myself. Quads were a bit sore from yesterdays run. I really think they should properly map this area, its got loads of small contour features. It'd be just as good as areas like Simonside, Yateholme, Langfield common etc. Bit gutted to miss Longshaw, id been looking foward to it for weeks and then i go and get ill, thats £3 i wont see again. Hopefully just about over this coldy thing now but racing would not have been a wise move.

Some sessions are a pure joy, maybe you're running in gorgeous sunshine, maybe you're navigating sweetly through some awesome terrain, but then some sessions are cold, wet and manky. This was one of the latter. Went for a nice steady run on Nicky Nook, unfortunately the weather was horrendous (as it seems to be over most of England) and at times i had horizontal hail driving into my face. On the plus side i felt more like i think i should after a week of doing duck all ie. pretty good. Strong on the hills but still lacking a bit of speed on the flat, best get down the track soon. Also, i had girls aloud in my head most of the way round, always a bonus.
