Thursday Jan 31

cycling 1:00:00 [2]
Decided to give my heel a chance to heal. Went down the bike path to Mytholmroyd, then left up the Cragg Vale road (longest continuous gradient in England apparently, 968 feet in 5.5miles) and back through Sowerby. Some gorgeous scenery to look at. Got back just before the snow/hail/rain started : )

Wednesday Jan 30

running 49:00 [3]
Parked up the road from the start and recced leg 1 of the MTL. The middle hilly bit seemed alot longer than i remember from last year but apart from that it was fairly straightfoward. Didnt do the final hill from Holme Chapel as didnt think my heel would like it. The battle between the bloody mess that is my heel and my willpower to ignore it seems to be just about being won by me wtih the aid of 2 compeeds and wearing old road shoes that put less pressure on it.
running 12:00 [5]
60 x 30 x 8 up the track at the end. Just to get moving a bit quicker.
cycling 21:00 [2]
Cycled back to the car from where id sneakily stashed my bike near the end of the leg. Good resistance work out as i have to put a lot of effort in to get it to move even going downhill with the wind behind me.

Tuesday Jan 29

running 37:00 [2]
Hobble, curse, limp, ouch.

ow my blisters :(

Sunday Jan 27

running 10:00 [3]
Warm up. No warm down as in too much pain.
orienteering 1:12:00 [4]
Tankersley Badge event. Technically a pretty decent run. Clean through most of them but missed 3 and visited the depression to the north. Couple of small errors after that but nothing too much. Was surprised other people werent much faster as didnt feel i was moving well. Since my o shoes fell apart after the O trial i was running in brand new ones which dug viciously into the back of my heel causing much pain and copious bloodshed. Consequently i was running a bit funny and it slowed me down a bit but didnt affect my navigation. I particulary enjoyed the new map, defo the best map ive run on since WMOC in Austria last year. I also enjoyed Randyslacks comment of "come on big lad" when i saw him in the forest and his subsequent attempts to engage me in conversation whilst were still borienteering.

Saturday Jan 26

running 56:00 [3]
Similar route to last night but went down a few new footpaths as well. Was proper knackered, not physically tired but just really sleepy and wiped out. To race or not to race tommorrow, that is the question...

Friday Jan 25

running 54:00 [3]
Steady down the canal, up through the woods, onto Midgley Moor, Crow Hill, funny olde lanes, came back through Luddenden village for a change. Had the idea i might do a bit longer but i was tired and couldnt be bothered.

Thursday Jan 24

running 32:00 [2]
Warm up/down
running 30:00 [5]
60 x 30 x 16. Up the hill behind the house. Did 7 reps till i reached the top of the hill, then had to have a long (approx 4mins) recovery all the way back down the bottom. After the 2nd long recovery i struggled to get going again, got the hiccups and my thighs were chaffing most painfully so i called it a night on 16 reps (had planned 20). Felt pretty rough cycling back from the station today so pleased i got the 16 done.

Wednesday Jan 23

running 40:00 [3]
Up on t'moor again. Felt good. Bloody public transport, it really is the biggest waste of time. Why cant trains ever be uncrowded, the woman next to me nearly fainted today. It doesnt take a genius to work out that if a route is busy one day it probably will be the next day so put some more carriages on. morons.
running 35:00 [2]
Second part of the run. Round some places.

Tuesday Jan 22

running 35:00 [3]
Warm up/down inc some drills afterwards
running 26:00 [5]
4.00 x 1.30 rec x 5. Yey a day off cos of trainlines flooding. Tried out a new running route down the cycle path which is usually quite deserted. Should be good for building up some flat speed. Legs felt heavy to start but responded well and before i knew it i was the other side of Hebden Bridge. Suffering from some really sore inner thigh chaffage from the weekend, dunno why.
running 33:00 [2]
Some run. Up some hills.

Monday Jan 21

Free weights-core stability 56:00 [2]
Thought about going for a cycle or a recovery run but it was raining so hard all day and there was water everywhere so i decided against it.

Sunday Jan 20

orienteering 1:55:00 [4]
Warrior O trial. Took a longer than optimum route to no.1 to try and avoid climb but think it was pointless. Was running strongly but faffed slightly in the circle on 2. Then on no. 5 i tried to go straight but was slow going down a very wet, slippy, rocky slope. Then i was in the circle but slightly below the rocky niche the control was in so spent a while lining up the features before realising where it was. Got into more of a rhythm after that but was surprised no.10 was so far down the slope. Got a bit tired about 2/3rds of way round but got a second wind and navigated pretty well for the rest of it. Prob could have pushed harder in some sections but thought it was going to be longer than it was. Felt strong at the end.
running 10:00 [3]
Warm down. I figured the walk up the mountain to the start was a good enough warm up.

Saturday Jan 19

running 20:00 [3]
Warm up/down
orienteering 37:00 [5]
Warrior short race. Pushed hard from the start and quickly got into the map. Had a decent clean controlled run. Didnt really lose any time, maybe 15 secs when i fell over going to no.15 so lost map contact.

Thursday Jan 17

running 1:06:00 [2]
Up onto Midgley Moor. V wet, the footpaths were like streams.

Wednesday Jan 16

running 35:00 [3]
Warm up and down along the canal, including a few strides and drills afterwards.
running 27:00 [5]
Had planned to do mile reps down the canal but it was far too waterlogged and muddy so i devised a loop near Sowerby Bridge which went steeply up on the road, flat along the canal, back on the road steeply uphill then down a bit then flat. Did 5mins x 1.40 rec x 4. Was hard work but was hitting pretty much the same point at the end each time except the last when i got a few metres further. Bit knackered now.

Monday Jan 14

running 49:00 [3]
Home-Midgley Moor- Crow Hill-golf course-far end of Mytholmroyd (birthplace of Ted Hughes apparently).
running 31:00 [4]
Put the hammer down and tempo ran it up to Stoodley Pike monument. Was tough going with a strong wind, battering rain and sodden terrain underfoot. About 300 metres climb i think.
running 41:00 [3]
Took shelter under the monument and had a gel then ran back across Erringden Moor and home via some back routes. Felt tired but able to keep up a decentish pace on the way back. Certainly better than last week.

Sunday Jan 13

orienteering 33:00 [3]
Control pick on the sexiest area in the world ever (southern part only). Was raining so hard to get completely intothe map as couldnt use magnifier properly. Steady running and no mistakes.
running 15:00 [5]
10x1min with 30sec rec up the track in the centre of the area.
orienteering 15:00 [2]
Bit of shadowing, used it as a relocation exercise.

Saturday Jan 12

orienteering 1:04:00 [2]
Trains on Ogden Water. Failure to procure another map from the visitor centre meant we improvised using a badge event map from 2002. Worringly i remembered quite a lot of the course, which makes me think im really rather anal. Ran it backwards and at an easy pace. Everything seemed to come up rather quickly but the whole running in a forest/reading a map thing felt quite normal, which is a good sign. Nice area.

running 42:00 [1]
Horsey field-wood-danger path-fields-usual way home. Was quite slow and faffy.

Thursday Jan 10

running 40:00 [2]
Felt up for a run so went for a wee potter around Luddenden's back passages. Legs ok, have been fairly wrecked the past two days so couldnt be arsed doing anything.

Monday Jan 7

running 1:49:00 [3]
Up onto Midgley moor, along to the golf course, down the valley clippping the edge of Mytholmroyd, up the other side to Stoodley and back along the canal. Tired legs...

Sunday Jan 6

orienteering 54:00 [5]
Buck Wood CC. Had a fairly ok run, lost a couple of silly minutes when twice i ran up the wrong path cos i didnt check my compass (once a boulder on the ground was covered by the red line so i confused it for another). Was surprised to get totally rinsed by HH when i saw the results. Thought i was running pretty well (for me) at the start of Nov, ive either lost these gains or am currently more tired than i realised. Heart rate was about 10bpm below what would usually constitute racing and i never felt particulary fleet. A rest week (post monday) is in order methinks to find out what the reason might be.

Free weights-core stability 56:00 [2]
Didnt have time for anything else today.

Friday Jan 4

running 1:24:00 [3]
Steady up onto Midgely Moor. Still plenty of snow about. For about a mile i was following the tracks of a dog/cat creature with no human footprints beside it. Im no ray mears but they were pretty big paw prints. All this talk on nopesport about wild cats in britain has made me paranoid. Theres planty of sheep to live off up there. Maybe the occasional runner too.
running 31:00 [2]
I didnt really want to but a pre hollyoaks evening run was necessary.

Thursday Jan 3

Free weights-core stability 56:00 [2]
running 27:00 [3]
Ran to the shop in Mytholmroyd to buy something for tea. Didnt feel at all stupid in my lycra in Sainsburys.
running 21:00 [2]
Bit more of a warm up/down.
running 30:00 [5]
120/60 x 10 round some football pitches. Pretty much the dullest session ive ever done. Because it was on the flat i struggled to get the heart rate up and as was setting my own pace i lacked motivation. Need to get down the track for this sort of thing but it takes too much time to get there. Still, at least its over now.

Wednesday Jan 2

running 56:00 [3]
Parked at the Shephards Rest Inn up from Tod and ran steadily up the hill to the top of the ridge then along till the monument on Stoodley and back down the same way. Freezing cold, must have been minus 10 or something with the wind chill.

Tuesday Jan 1

orienteering 1:17:00 [2]
Putting out controls and collecting them in afterwards. It was a looong day. I was sick of that muddy track out of the valley by the end of it.
orienteering 45:00 [4]
Long tech course at Roeburndale. Wasnt reading the map enough at the start and so lost contact and 2mins evaporated (as usual). Bilbo had snuck past at this point so i chased him and caught him. Unfortunately, by this point because id climbed up and down so many wet, muddy slopes my map had become sodden and had torn clean in two (id wrongly assumed it was waterproof so hadnt taken a map bag). This meant i couldnt thumb the map at all as my compass went through the paper and so i was running on quick glimpses of the map. It got tricky because the course crossed the tear several times and i felt like i was trying to piece together a jigsaw whilst orienteering. The rough, slippy, slitheryness of the ground meant everyone was pretty much running at the same speed and i couldnt get away from Bilbo tlll the final hill when the ground had solidified. Turned out he'd mispunched, which was a shame.
